A True Disappointment

Overall, it has been a disappointing experience with the zoom fly. I fell in love with the original zoom fly, to the extent of going on resale sites, Facebook meetups and outlet hunts to find more pairs to run in after I ran through my previous pair. When I finally decide to muster up the strength to move on from my ride or die model I thought the only logical option was to get the most up to date zoom fly. Sadly, it led me to a major let down. The structure of the shoe feels off centered and my heel tends to pull to one side or the other and I resort to running with a goofy stride and feel uneasy with every step. Maybe I got a defective pair but all-in-all I’m let down with what this new iteration of my all time favorite runner.

The shoes have great cushioning, that help my knees not to hurt, and fit snug and secure on my feet. Out of the box these shoes are great! They have the classic black and white colorway, big Nike swoosh, and are extremely breathable and comfortable to wear. The only issue I had is the shoes rubbed my heel raw on the first couple runs. I purchased these running shoes on August 31st, 2023, but I didn't start wearing them until October 15th, 2023, as I always order shoes in advance of need. I've been running for over 50 years now, so I have a bit of a background with running shoes, as I change out about every three months. These Zoom Fly 5's are great for comfort, but the trade-off is that they are very loud and as far as the sole, the backs I am already having to apply hot glue to the corners, as wear has been extremely quick. Usually, I can get about 4 to 5 weeks before I have to use glue on the heels, but with these I was only able to get nine days. I still cannot believe the engineers at Nike cannot come up with a more durable rubber, so at this point I would say that Nike knows about this ... MoreI purchased these running shoes on August 31st, 2023, but I didn't start wearing them until October 15th, 2023, as I always order shoes in advance of need. As far as the noise, it's something I can accept, as I know why they make the noise which most likely has to do with the sole being stiff, which pertains to the comfort factor. In closing, I am a tried-and-true Nike loyalist, as twice in my career I have tried other brands, only to get injured within a couple of days. I just wish Nike could build a comfortable shoe, like this one, and also have it be durable.

Disappointed
16 June 2024

I tried a quick run with these ZF. It was not as I expected. Heaver shoes and a bit clunky. My biggest disappointment was the poor heel lock, even with a runners knot. The ride is a bit on the stiffer, responsive side but expected with the carbon plate. Excellent support on the lateral side of shoe but can feel like tipping over on the medial, inside of shoe. Plenty of room inside toe box, and upper material is so-so. I will be returning this shoe for something else.

Found my perfect versatile shoe!!! 😃

Nike you made this shoe perfect!!! I used to run in the invincible 2 but felt a little unstable in that shoe. So I bought the zoom fly 5. And wow this shoe checks all the boxes. I can use this shoe for daily running and long runs. The carbon plate felt so good on rolling me forward and the transitions felt so smooth. And the cushioning stayed consistent all the way through my run. It is way more stable than the invincible and the lock down is perfect. No heel slip at all unlike the invincible 3. I noticed on my running, my heart rate wasn’t that high, and also my running felt easier and faster. When it came to running up the hills, it was so much easier compared to my invincible run. I’m not a fast runner at all but this shoe gave me hope in one day becoming better overall athlete. Don’t listen to the negative reviews. This shoe is like a better Pegasus but can race in and more like a durable training/racing workhorse. Good job Nike!!! 👏

Good Distance Shoe
1 March 2024

(Runner Type: 4-6 mile runs at a 6:30- 6:45 pace age 27)So far I logged about 20 miles in the shoe. They look great and have good support on the heel to help absorb impact and save your knees. The shoe is not aggressive or as responsive as the Vapor Fly next gen% (my favorite), but for the price point it's a good bang for your buck. I recommend them for long distance runs with a medium tempo pace. Now as much as I want to love the Zoom Fly 5s there are some cons which is making me have to exchange/replace them. The left shoe makes a weird suction and popping noise? I believe it is the zoom bubble in the insole, I've popped that before in my old ZoomX. Not bad, but definitely a downgrade from the Zoom Fly 4 for me
23 June 2023

I’ll say up front that I buy running shoes exclusively as daily use shoes for walking etc. and do not run in them. That said, these feel like a noticeable downgrade from the ZF4. I would agree that the carbon plate is not as strong as the ZF4 - those felt like they were literally adding energy to my stride while these lack that pop. I’d say the increased width and traction are an upgrade, but as a non-runner those aren’t as important to be as cushion.I also scrolled through all of the reviews to see if this has been mentioned and am a little surprised I didn’t see it, but there’s a design issue with the triangle-shaped pocket on the bottom of the shoe with the transparent window to the transparent foam. When walking on flat smooth surfaces (garage floor, tile, hardwood floors, etc.), that pocket acts as a suction cup, likely because of the flexibility of that window. When I say it acts like a suction cup, there is a clearly audible noise when I lift my foot (yes, audible to bystanders) as if you’re pulling up a suction cup. There’s also a definitely feeling of suction when lifting my foot - not enough to affect my stride but I can absolutely feel the sensation of the shoe breaking suction from the ground. It doesn’t help that the ZF4 was the best shoe I’ve ever owned, but these went from shoes I wanted to keep in tip top shape to ones I don’t care to get wet/dirty as a daily shoe.

Should not be part of Zoom Fly collection
16 January 2024

My 2 previous run shoes were the Zoom Fly 3s & Zoom Fly 4s. I got over 500 miles in the Zoom Fly 4s before purchasing the 5s.The previous 2 models featured the sock-like upper (Vapor Weave for the 3s and Flyknit for the 4s) with the stretchy tongue that’s totally one with the shoe. The Zoom Fly 5s are a light mesh material, but not the stretchy, thin sock-like material from 2 previous models with a regular tongue that moves around while running. Both the 3s and 4s featured a narrow footprint with a durable hard rubber sole. The 5s have a wider footprint with a softer foam that feels less stable. After putting 40 miles on the 5s, they feel ok after being broken in. But not what I expected from the Zoom Fly series, based on the 2 previous models.

Too many downgrades compared to Zoom Fly 4, less durability, less quality plate, very comfortable though
29 November 2022

Many reviewers are saying the plate has been downgraded from the zoom fly 4. It also seems like the mid-sole was also downgraded since it's using used crushed zoom-x foam which decreases the durability of the mid-sole tremendously.ZoomX is a pebax foam, and like all pebax the lifetime of energy return is limited. So using old recycled zoomx plus GLUE, will make the midsole less durable and heavy. This makes it have less longevity than something that has pure zoomx. That means that your training shoe has less longevity than your zoomx racing shoe!So the downgrade of the midsole as well as the plate, makes it a no go for me.The Nike's fast trainer is the supposed to be the tempo next%, the zoom fly should be the durable, long lasting plated runner. So I think it was a missed opportunity to use react and not downgrade the plate from the carbon plate in the zoom fly 4. Nike may fool a bit of people on their first impressions of the shoe, but old zoomx + glue will definitely not last the test of time. I'm still wearing my all black zoom fly 1 from many years ago, so I'm disappointed that I cannot upgrade now. However, the good things about it are the upper and outsole. Really comfortable upper, and the outsole is more grippy and wider. The midsole is just too much of a letdown to overlook. Ended up returning this shoe and going for the zoom fly 4.I've been in the zoom fly for the past 5 years and it's a shame that the legendary line is being baited and switched with a lower quality product now, after the name has garnered fame. Please Nike, please return to the performance + durability combination of react + premium carbon fiber plate. This would turn it into a 5 star shoe.I hope nike doesn't wait another two years to redesign the midsole.

This product is very well rounded! Super impressed with the simple box with the packaging. When got the package, opened the box, the shoes were wrapped nicely and product was 100%. Took out both shoes and tried them on, was a little bit scared they would be a little snugged but when put on the shoes fit perfectly.I also wore the zoom flys at the gym to workout in and they are super comfortable.
