It's the Nikon 105mm micro. It's an amazing lens that takes great photos. It's been on my wish list for a long time. The lens creates sharp images. I'll be using this lens a lot.

This lens is dangerous! The sharpness is outstanding (especially on Macro), bokeh is out of this world, and focusing is fast. This was the first dedicated macro lens I ever used, and I don't want to go back to rings. If I am going to shoot macro again, I will most likely rent this lens again - little too pricey for me to buy at the moment.Only negative was the VR. It was noisy and I could actually feel some vibration. Didn't really need VR so had it turned off. Hopefully it was an issue with this specific lens and not across the board with all these lenses (my other Nikon VR lenses do not have this noise and vibration). Lensrentals said they will review once the lens is back.Overall, can't go wrong with this lens. Highly recommended even for macro newbies like myself!

Excellent service. Easy return process. Opportunity to have time getting to know the top end Nikkor 105mm F2.8 micro lens was much appreciated. Looking forward to future rentals with Lens rentals.

Great lens. But you should know that when using a D3100 or any model which doesn't have a focus motor built into the camera body that this lens will only work in manual focus mode. Super crisp macro pictures, and really nice for portraits too. Real metal housing. Feels so well made compared to the cheaper plastic lenses the camera came with. When you first mount it onto a D3100, it should be set to f32. After installing it, slide the little lock switch to the orange locked position. Then the camera body can tell the lens what aperture to use without seeing any error messages. I usually put it in Aperture mode, and manually pick an aperture that suits the lighting conditions, then focus manually. Look at speed to see if it makes sense for what you're doing. It has a ... I usually put it in Aperture mode, and manually pick an aperture that suits the lighting conditions, then focus manually. Look at speed to see if it makes sense for what you're doing. It has a pretty narrow focal range when taking macro shots. But that's normal for all macro lenses like this. It comes in handy on portraits where you might want the background to be a soft focus. Overall it's a really nice lens, and I don't mind not having the autofocus feature on my D3100 too much. These pictures were taken in normal daylight, hand-holding the camera. A yellow jacket and a Daddy Longlegs.
I've rented from Lensrentals before and wanted to try this one to see if it was good enough to buy. The rental process was very smooth, really appreciated it.The lens produces awesome pictures, I was stunned by the quality. The focusing was quick and spot-on, macro shots came out excellent. The only issue I had was with the VR, it was noisy and I could actually feel it. None of my other (Nikon) VR lenses exhibit this behavior, nor any Sigma lens I have used in the past. Turning off VR (because you don't really need it with this lens) fixed it. I brought this to the attention of the staff and they noticed the same with all the other Nikon 105mm Micro lenses. Not sure if this is normal for this particular lens, but I didn't like it. Lensrentals was gracious that they ... I love this lens! It is what I need for photo scanning, plus it's just fun to use the macro/micro to take great close-up photos of flora and fauna. It arrived in good time and in good shape. The original box (inside the packaging) was a little bent on one corner, but it doesn't seem to have affected the lens.
The 105mm AI/S gets a lot of good press. So, this D version was gotten (I like the D models (and AI/S too)), Wow! OK... lens is fantastic. The output reminds me a lot of the 180mm f/2.8 D. Saturation, contrast, and sharpness are as good or better as any other 16 lenses owned. The focal length makes it a favorite for outdoor portrait shooting. The Micro capability hasn't really been given a fair shot, but it does seem OK (not as good as the 60mm D yet). So yeah, you won't be disappointed with this lens if you get a good one.
Nikon replacement of their previous mid range macro lens. I love the longer range of the 105 mm over the 60 mm macro length. Nikon designates it's macro lenses as "micro". Previously I owned and loved the Nikon AF-D Micro 105 mm. This lens adds an excellent VR or vibration compensation ability to the lens to lessen shaking and un-sharp photos. This lens is excellent for portraiture due to its fast aperture (f/2.8) and longer distance (105 mm) compared to kit lenses, thus permitting nice bokeh (blurring the distance behind main subject). It's also excellent for fireworks. The 105 mm helps to better fill the frame and the faster aperture helps to shorten the time needed to get the shot. Love this solidly built, though hefty and somewhat expensive lens; although not really heavier or more costly than it's name brand rivals.
This lens is sharper than a 12 meg sensor can capture, and it is easy to focus well. There are plenty of detailed reviews available for this lens online, but I will share a couple of observations after using it on an older D700 for a while. Using this lens on a modern camera means that you have to use manually-set aperture settings (which are done, conveniently, on the lens itself in the old way), but if you are serious enough about photography to consider buying a lens like this one, that should be no big deal (you should be picking specific apertures anyway, and the aperture ring makes it easy to do that). You can let the camera pick the exposure or use the camera's manual controls for that. (And on most cameras these days, you can let the camera pick an ... (And on most cameras these days, you can let the camera pick an appropriate ISO, so you can still focus-then-point-and-shoot with fixed A-S settings if that's your bag.) Something that might annoy some people is the fact that the manual lens settings controls in (most? all?) Nikon DSLRs don't include the lens name or model (or focus, perhaps obviously), and it annoyed me for about a minute, but I wrote an AppleScript that uses exiftool command lines to fill most of that in later and am happy with the results. I have attached some of the test shots I took took right after receiving thelens.
for what it is, it is phenomenal. I bought it because it was advertised as a D-series lens (which I needed, as I have a Nikon1 with the FT-1 adapter), but it is actually a pre-D AF series lens. I cannot auto-focus this lens because I have the wrong camera (camera needs to have an auto-focus motor integrated into the camera). Now on to the awesome features. It has 1:1 magnification at its closest focus distance, and the image is very contrasty and with great accutance, resolution, and color reproduction, all the way to 2.8. Color fringing is minimal up to F4, and noticeable but easily correctable in post at f2.8. Focus throw is a respectable 180 degrees, but I prefer a bit more for accurate focus, especially in macro focal distances. Image resolution and accutance is ... Morefor what it is, it is phenomenal. This is definitely a dual-purpose macro lens and portrait/near-telephoto lens. The optics of this lens and the 105mm F2.8 D series is identical. If you are on a budget and are okay with manual focus in case your camera is not compatible, then this will be great! If you need auto-focus, and have the right camera to use it, then get the D-series version of this lens. Either way, I hope you will be as happy with this lens as I am!
