These were a great buy. I had wanted a pair of 16x50 binocs for a long time but theyre a little pricy for someone on a fixed income. This pair popped up as an open box and the price was about half off of retail so I jumped. Nikon makes great products and these are no exception . Very sharp and clear with good eye relief. Our yard is full of birds which was my main reason for buying them. Im very glad that I did.

I was lucky enough that it was on sale that time at $75 including tax. I had a wonderful time looking thru this as we wound our way California thru Oregon and to Washington. I had a fun time viewing thru this when we went up the Space Needle.We also just did a cross country drive from Florida to California that took us to a lot of parks and attractions along the way and this was with me. They are bright enough to use in the early morning or late in the day, when light is iffy.8x is about right for birding -- it's got enough magnification to help in identification, but not so much that it's hard to find the bird. It's also about as much magnification as I can use without getting seasick from my own unsteady hands.There is some chromatic aberration around the edges of the lenses, but the sweet spot of the lenses are free of CA. The intent is to adjust the binocular by looking through the right eyepiece and focusing on an object. Then close the right eye and look through the left eye at the same object. Adjust the diopter control as needed to bring the left eye into focus. Finally, open both eyes and move the two barrels together or apart until the two eyes are seeing one aligned in-focus image. There is no point in having a diopter adjustment for both eyes when you use the adjustment as designed.

However, this Nikon Aculon 8x42 binocular's quality for the price can not be beat by any other available model. My wife finds it easy to use. The case is junk, wo a strap, and too small to add closed-cell blue foam/ensolite padding to the inside. Find a strapped shoulder bag with a real zipper (not spiral type) AND a flap/strap with a clip to backup the zipper for safety. Use a Ziplock bag inside to keep the binoc dust free. The binoc strap plastic adjuster is NOT secure, despite my very careful following the installation steps. I purchased the Nikon Aculon 7x 35 binoculars some time back and found them to be a solid instrument for general viewing. So, when the 8x42 Nikon Aculon became available at a reduced price, I didn't hesitate to purchase it. It will supplement the 7x35's and is being used for quick views of the night sky. It provides clear, distortion free star images and pulls in a little more light than the 7x35's. The right diopter adjustment is a little tricky but works with a little patience. I have used it in the daylight as well and it gives bright, sharp images. I recommend these binoculars to anyone who is looking for a relatively light, quality instrument at a reasonable price.

I’ve sneaked them out once or twice on my backyard bird watching times. My son is so happy with them. I've owned a pair for many years, now, and they remain, to this day, one of the absolute best purchases I've made in 26 years of deer hunting. Just to give you an example of the Nikon Aculon's pedigree, some hunting buddies and I conducted our own little optics "shootout". The 3 contenders included a pair of Steiner binos that cost well north of $200.00, a pair of Leupold binos that cost north of $400.00, and my Nikon Aculon binos that came in at a meager cost of just under $100.00. While the Steiner and Leupold binos certainly offer incredible quality and performance, all of us agreed that, in terms of image quality, ergonomics, and construction, my Nikon Aculon binos more than held their own against 2 high quality manufacturers in Steiner and Leupold. In fact, with the exception of a tinge of peripheral blur in the Aculon, it was almost impossible to truly distinguish a clear winner in image quality and clarity among the 3. So, the final verdict? You can absolutely get amazing high quality optics the higher up the price ladder you climb, but you will certainly not be compromising high quality at an insanely affordable price by choosing from Nikon's incredible line of Aculon binoculars.
