Is this the best lens ever? No, but it will never let you down, I had a Sigma Art 24 1.4 and in the ultimate pixel peeping it may have had a slight edge. However it could mess up focusing and it was heavy. This little gem doesn't do anything wrong; it always hits focus ( albeit at typical Nikon 1,8g series leisurely speed ). It provides consistently sharp beautifully colored files and is a joy to use. Oh, and it doesn't way 800 grams. You can not go wrong here. Perhaps it is about one hundred dollars over priced, but so be it. The build quality freaks might find too much plastic and the manual focus ring isn't the best, ( who is running around manually focusing a 24mm? ) but it is really a nicely made lovely lens to own and use.Oh, one last thought. I read so many reviews, bad and good ones, a lot about focusing and speed accuracy. All I had so far were on spot. I had no single picture out of focus. This is the best close up lens I had. Amazing fast, picture quality, weight, everything. Mine was refurbished but not a point less than new (came with third party cap). The only lens which could beat sharpness was my 85 1.8 but still super close to each other. Other tele lenses I have wide open are no where close this 24 mm. You will never regret this lens. BTW my camera is D850 and this lens can get the juice the camera can give. Enjoy

My motivation for purchasing was the same as reviewer FOCUSING PROBLEMS. I should have taken that person's review to heart as I experienced the same issue with it when attached to my D750 body. I got the lens just in time to take it on a trip to LaQuita, CA. The coral mountains there are just (in my mind) amazing. There is sharp contrast in their formations and should have given this lens ample opportunity to show case what I hoped would be stellar crispness. Didn't happen. The pictures were soft and out of focus. I tried adjusting it using the AF tuning feature of the camera but alas the fix to the problem lay way outside the parameters that were available in the camera. I send it back to B&H and, as otherwise notes, it was a painless process.
I began looking for a lens to bridge the gap between my Sigma 20 and Tamron 35 f/1.4 to round out my set of primes. (Also have a Sigma 50 and 85) The big debate was between the Sigma 24 f/1.4 and Nikon 24 f'/1.8. After reading many reviews and ratings, I chose the Nikon. Most reviews agreed the two were very comparable, but the Nikon was smaller and lighter. Some were concerned the Nikon was not made in Japan. I believe the quality standards of Nikon are the same no matter where they are built. Others had forward focusing issues. I have not had any. I am extremely pleased with the lens.
I decided to buy the 24mm instead of the 28mm based on the 36mm effective focal length when used on my D7200, and the full 24mm when used on my D750. The IQ of this lens, on both bodies, has been excellent. I shoot mostly .jpeg, and, being in the Florida Keys, almost always in decent natural light. Subject matter has been marine-oriented, i.e. boats, marine life, sea birds, and the occasional portrait of a Florida Keys boat Captain, or mate. So far the lens has performed quite well. It focuses fast, renders good color, and contrast, and I've not noticed any vignetting, CA, distortion, or soft edges.
This was an upgrade to the 24mm 2.8D that I own, and I am impressed. You can get substantially closer to the subject with minimal barrel distortion, and the auto focus doesn't have to hunt so much. The lens seems to be sharper closer to f/4, but I have had many instances where I could open up a bit more and still maintain sharpness even though this isn't best practice The struggle with focus comes into play while shooting video. I would suggest developing a solution that routes into a reference monitor with focus peaking. When you shoot that wide, pulling focus is really difficult to nail down without some extra help. It's not the lens's fault, it's just the nature of the beast. In terms of image quality, if you own any of the f/1.8 G lenses, or the 105mm f/2.8 ... I just got this lens a couple weeks ago. I've owned many 24mm lenses in 48 years of shooting. Immediately I unwrapped it and started testing sharpness and contrast around my home and property. Wow! Not just sharpness but contrast and saturation too! This lens is far beyond my expectations. This example has a butter-smooth focusing ring too. I debated the f/1.4 version, but my primary use for this lens is landscape and architecture. I have the f/1.4 versions of the 35, 58 and 85mm Nikkor lenses. Those are for skin, hair, face and color rendering, and they are awesome. But this lens isn't going to be working in my studio doing portraits. I tried to choose the right lens for the purpose. So far, so good! 5 stars!

A series of flat field shots with lots of detail at about a meter produced very sharp images to edge of the FX frame (D600). At f1.8 the sharpness was already remarkable right to the edge with very little distortion and stopping down showed a slight, almost imperceptible improvement, but at f4 the detail really pops. The center detail, I would say equals the Sigma f1.4art lens, but the Nikon surpasses the Sigma at the edges. The included sample shots (please forgive the creepy selfie) are straight out of the camera jpegs with a slight crop and no other post processing (image #1 at f5.6, image #2 at f2).
