I am SO happy to have this lens! I use an all-in-one lens for traveling lightly on my motorcycle and this just fits the bill. It is a faster lens than the one I used previously with my cropped sensor camera. I'm very happy with the focus-ability and both modes of image stabilization. I was worried about the weight of my new setup but it's not that much different than my old so I'm very pleased.

As the eleventh addition to my collection of lens, this one more than surpasses my every expectations. Ive mulled over purchasing it for six months, after it was first called to my attention by a professional photographer at a workshop that I attended. My usual go-to lens is a 24-105 mm attached to either a D500 or D850. The 28-300 mm will now assume that role on the D850. Despite comments to the contrary by a few reviewers, it is not at all heavy and it does not extend by itself when carried on a strap for long periods of time. In my testing each image is sharp as several other more expensive Nikon lens that I own, regardless of the where within its range it is used. I simply couldnt be happier with its performance and versatility. In order to create a lens like this and keep its price under $1,000 you are not going to get it in a flat f2.8 or anything like that. If that kind of beast was available you would expect to spend thousands more. So yes at 300mm and being f5.6 it will have a harder time in darker scenarios. But understanding that you can more than make up for it by planning out your shots a little bit. Also, typically you would have a say 24-70mm and then a second lens doing the 70-200mm or 300mm range. This allows them to adjust the optics to get less pincushion or other types of lens distortion. It basically removes "am I using the right lens?" from the equation because you can get almost anything you want with this lens and just focus on the shot itself. And that is where I intend to use it.Now... the seller of the lens I bought, however... If the price is too good to be true, stay away. Authorized dealers seem to only be able to sell Nikon Warrantied lenses at $3 less than Nikon themselves does. If you find it for less, unless Nikon is offering a discount, it's probably gray market (i.e. no US 5 year warranty).

We bought it new and given the zoom range, the results have been quite good both optically and mechanically. However, barely one year after buying it, it has literally fallen apart.The first thing to happen is that the zoom control started to bind, and then got stuck half way through the range. Putting some force to it freed it up, but it would do it again and again, then start working, and then it would do it again. Days later, all of a sudden a bad vignetting started and when I took the lens off and looked through it, one of the diaphragm blades was not retracting, ... MoreMy wife and I shoot professionally. They would not respond, and sent the lens back when I rejected the estimate.I know from reading and from fellow pros that Nikon is in deep financial trouble. And, compared with Canon and Sony customer service, Nikon seems to reject most warranty claims stating the items are "damaged".If we weren't so invested in Nikon gear we would switch but it's not a consideration right now. Has anyone else suffered from this type of bad hardware and bad customer service from Nikon?We are considering taking Nikon to small claims court just to put them through the wringer and make them have to at least suffer some of the inconvenience they have caused us. We may not win but it would be worth it just to go through the effort.Anyone's thoughts would be appreciated.ThanksGary
I rented the 28-300mm lens to use during a photography workshop. The workshop photo locations were mostly outside and changed several times a day. The extended zoom range of the Nikon 28-300mm negated the need to carry multiple lenses, a notable convenience on this occasion. Image quality and focusing speed/accuracy paired nicely with a Nikon D750 DSLR, especially when combined with the Lens Correction function in Lightroom Classic. I would rent this lens again.

While it may look impressive to the client, what matters most to mine are the final results. Being able to cover practically an entire room full of people, then with a quick zoom, get an emotional close-up means more than any bit of imperfections such as noise distortion or lack of tack. Most of those flaws can be corrected in Lightroom anyway.I've been using the 28-300 for seven years on a D750. Just upgraded to the D850, which takes noise issues almost off the table. When using an AI noise reduction software from Topaz Labs, there's nothing left to see or complain about.With my new set-up, I've recently rediscovered the joys of wildlife photography, too. Although 300 isn't the ideal focal length for birds, it's perfectly suitable for larger animals. Human portraits now come out too sharp, revealing the smallest blemishes, pores and more!

Some physical characteristics: The lens lengthens as you zoom, starting right away from 28mm. At 300mm, it is about double the 28mm length. It's a bit heavier than I expected, but not too bad: 800g. For a couple of comparisons, the 24-120 f/4 is 710g, and the 24-70 f/2.8 ED VR (2016 model) is 1080g. If I weren't travelling with this lens, I might be carrying the 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II, at 1540g -- nearly double. The zoom action is fairly stiff when zooming in from 28mm to 105mm; it loosens up some going from 105mm to 200mm, and is much more free going from 200mm to 300mm. Zooming in the opposite direction, from tele to wide, it has modest resistance, similar to that going from 200mm to 300mm; and it stays pretty constant all the way back to 28mm. I don't think I'd want to zoom in while shooting video starting at anything wider than 105mm. I'm not sure why it's stiff zooming in from the widest ranges, and why it's much less stiff over the same wide end of the range when zooming out. Here's a guess: the lens has a lock at 28mm, and the manual says to lock it when carrying the camera to prevent the lens from extending due to its own weight. Perhaps the drag is another mitigation against the lens extending while carrying it. The lens comes with the HB-50 hood, which protrudes about 60mm top and bottom but only about 28mm on the sides. The sides were short enough that I was able to rotate my Nikon CP-15 polarizing filter, though it's not the most convenient. In the 28mm shot below, there's some noticeable vignetting in the upper right corner. (I haven't checked if that was from the filters or the hood.) As I said, I haven't shot a lot with it yet. In the sequence of four shots I took at the beach (two of them below -- taken on a D750), they came out with a bit too much contrast. The late-afternoon sunlight was fairly harsh, though. Some other shots taken in softer light with the sun behind a cloud bank on the horizon didn't have the same issue.
You can't beat the convenience of this lens. It goes from 28mm all the way to 300mm and is respectably sharp at f/8 at the long end and f/5.6 at shorter focal lengths. It's not as sharp as my pro glass, and the contrast isn't quite as good, but it's a miracle that it is as good as it is given that super zooms are always optical compromises. VR is good enough that I can get sharp photos most of the time at 1/30 of a second, and maybe 50% of the time at 1/15-1/20. My copy had a slight front focus that needed +1 AF Fine tune to correct. I will say that if you are a hard core pixel peeper who uses professional glass, you might not be happy with this lens. But if you aren't the kind of person who looks at their photos under a magnifying glass, you will love the ... MoreYou can't beat the convenience of this lens. Brought this on an African safari, and though I still made much more use of my 150mm-600mm, this gave me added flexibility. I could go from a photo of an animal in a landscape to just the animal alone. It was especially helpful for close giraffes and elephants. I’m considering buying one for myself. It is heavier than just a wide angle, but it didn’t feel too heavy for me.

I have not experienced any zoom creep, but in enjoy having the lock when I transport it.The 6 images I've included were all shot with this lens. You can judge for yourself if it has enough detail, color rendition and reach. Personally, I couldn't be happier. I no longer have to carry a bag full of lenses. I carry one and I get the shot.
