Not a lot I can say that hasn't been said, but I will confirm what others have said. When I first took it out and tried it in the yard, it didn't seem to focus any faster than my 200-500 - which was one of the reasons I'd purchased this. I've concluded that the light wasn't good enough on that overcast late afternoon. I took it down to the lake where I like to shoot, and it was amazing! Fast focus, and frame-filling 600mm. When I looked at the shots on the computer, I was even more pleased. I've been happy with the sharpness of the 200-500, and just applied a little sharping in post processing, but these shots were absolutely sharp right out of the camera! Superb lens!Today I tried it with the 1.4 extender. That's with a grip and extra battery on the D850. I'm a 150 pound 5'10, so you don't need to be muscle-bound to use this lens hand-held! I walk up to four miles with this thing (okay, walking is my exercise, so that part isn't unusual), but just carry it at my side with a Peak Design slide strap, and swing it up for shots! It's that easy to manage!

I finally took the dive and bought this magnificent piece of engineering art after years of lusting. Even more so when the new E version came out. The Nikkor 600mm f/4E FL ED VR is the best lens I've ever used and I have a lot of Nikkor Gold-Ring N lenses, including the recently introduced 400mm f/2.8E. The deep and subtle color rendition, bokeh, flair resistance, light weight and spectacular clarity/ sharpness make it stand out. The ability to point it directly in the direction of the sun and still have ample contrast and flair resistance is truly impressive. Autofocus is virtually instant. There is one caveat- The screw that locks the carbon-fiber lens hood is poorly designed in my opinion. If you carry the lens with the strap and it has a chance to rub up against your thigh for example, the chances are good the friction will work the lens hood loose as I learned the hard way on a sandy beach. (Simply rotate the screw away from potential rubbing).

VR is improved and marginally better than the previous model - allows 4 stops: I have gotten good shots at 1/250s using a TC 1.4 which is amazing. Focus is extremely fast and accurate and is superior in this new lens, especially on newer DSLR bodies. The best thing about the new 600mm is it is lighter and eaiser to carry and balance on the tripod. Not much more to say about the lens - Superior in all regards.

King of wildlife lenses
10 January 2022

This lens is nothing short of amazing for wildlife photographers! Having owned the previous model of this lens, I have to say this new version is a much welcome upgrade. The biggest thing you notice is the 3lb weight savings and the balance. If you?re walking or hiking around all day with a tripod every little bit of weight savings is welcomed. Sharpness and focus are lighting fast as to be expected with Nikons super telephotos. I also love the new upgraded single piece lens hood vs the older 2 piece design. This lens lives on my D850 and Gitzo tripod. Throw in a Wimberley Gimbal WH-200 and you have the best wildlife set up ever. Highly recommended to any serious advanced / professional photographer.

I traded in as much as I could to help ease the price of this beast. Now that I have it I am pleased and would do the same again. I did love my 500mm f4 VR prime but many of my bird shots were cropped more than I'd have liked and this extra reach makes that much of a difference. The lens, when on a D4 feels lighter than my 500 used to. It is actually much the same weight but the balance is slightly better. I can have my Gimbal head on my tripod and the camera with lens fitted and carry it all over my shoulder fairly comfortably. This lens is much lighter than it's predecessor and also the minimum focus distance attracted it to me as the previous version had a significantly longer minimum focus distance. (awkward when taking pictures of birds in the undergrowth and having lots of foliage in the way)I have tried it with a 2x teleconverter Mk III and it worked well. Easily focussing on a flying Kestrel but best I could get was f8. (Don't need this much reach anyway but I had to try). There is some vignetting to the corners of the shot if using the teleconverter but I don't plan on using this combination for landscape shots so this is easily and 99.9% of the time cropped out anyway. The autofocus is very fast. Faster than my 500mm f4 was. The tracking seems to be excellent but I've not used it much yet. Pictures I have taken have been sharp too.I can put this lens in to my carry on luggage and it fits within the length restrictions for airlines. (maybe not the weight but this is not going in the hold) I did this by replacing the useless bulky lens hood with a bespoke third party lens cap made in the US.For use with my Gimbal head I replaced the existing foot with the foot that I was using for my 500mm. The foot works but is a little too short so if you loosen the tripod head then the front of the lens dips but until the company who made the foot produce their new longer foot (apparently in June 16) this will do.In short... I'm a little short of cash for a while but I've got a smile on my face whenever I'm out there.

Shedding Pounds
5 August 2015

It goes without saying that Nikon's professional primes are top-tier tools. My guess is that anyone looking to purchase one of the new fluorite models is really asking themselves the question of whether or not the FL is worth the additional magnum duffel of cash that must be forked over vs. the previous model(s). The answer is all about weight. If you are a tripod shooter, don't do much air travel with your gear, and seldom pack your prime around then you can save the extra coin. DXO has not reviewed the 600FL or 500FL yet, but it's obvious based on tests of the 400FL that these new designs are about shedding pounds and that optical performance is equivalent. If you are like me, and have been bent into the posture of neanderthal man from lurching around mountainous terrain with a lens roughly equivalent in weight and ergonomics to an adolescent pachyderm...then absolutely you should get the FL version. This 600FL is about 3 pounds lighter than the previous 600/4, 2 pounds lighter than the old 400/2.8, and even weighs 1/5th of a pound less than the outgoing 500/4. It's not just total weight, however, because the new design is much less end heavy and more balanced as a whole. Can you handhold it? Well, I have been handholding the 10-pound 400/2.8 for years so this 8-pound 600 feels dramatically easier to handle in every regard. It's still physically large and requires good technique but since weight has been my #1 sore spot (literally) regarding super telephotos I pre-ordered this lens as soon as I saw the technical specifications. The price hurts but the FL primes are significantly easier to handle, carry, mount on support equipment, handhold, and travel with. If those things are deciding factors for you, it's an investment you won't regret.

Been a Nikon shooter for 35 years. My Nikon bio: I own five film Nikon cameras. I own eleven Nikon D lenses. Own five F mount cameras, D80, D7200 ( converted to IR ), D800. two D 850's. Upgraded to Z mount. I own three Z bodies, Z50, Z 6 with FTZ adapter, and finally Z9 + FTZ2. The 600 AF-S f/4E FL ED VR has been a disappointment. When it is functional the images are superb by any standard. I compete in photo competitions, consistently scoring among the highest. My issue is quality of construction/design. The lens is now in Nikon's repair department's hands for the third time! It will not auto-focus with any of my F or Z mount bodies. I am not saying don't purchase Nikon products. Best of luck to all of you but understand lots of $$$$ does not guarantee that the best of equipment will work. Yes I purchased this lens from B&H.

Spectacular results at long distances with the Nikon 600/4 G lens

Except for the weight, there is nothing bad about the lens. I have handle-held the lens and taken excellent photos of butterflies and insects. Adding a TC-14 teleconverter gives you 850mm of reach with no measurable loss of resolution. You capture magnified details in high resolution. You need to dial down to F/5.6 or F/8.0 to get a couple of inches more of depth of field. The bokeh is beautiful. As to the 13 or so pound of lens weight, all I can say is this: Once you capture some details far away, you will become so inspired that you will learn to deal with the weight. I use a BlackRapid sling: When standing still, I let the sling bear the weight to rest my arms. When I shoot, the handle is underneath. I can hold the lens and take pictures for about 30 seconds. You get tired but will force yourself to continue shooting because of the spectacular results obtained. If you can shoot at or more than 1/1250, you will have no noticeable camera shake. I write all of this sincerity. I am 75 years old. If I can do it, so can you.

Top class and a little lighter
24 August 2022

It is a simple review. The lens is spot on, optically its first class, it has to be. Mind there are no rubbish lenses now optically to be fair, poor images these days are down to the camera operator and how the kit is used. This new 600mm variant is lighter than its older brother. It's a little more expensive too, but to be honest it's worth it. Built to last and worked to death, looked after this lens will last a lifetime, or many, many years if worked day in day out. I do use a mono pod and tripod when using this lens but I can hand hold it and get tack sharp images, better than the older variant. Rent one out a few times if your new to primes and this sort of financial outlay. Wex do a fantastic rental service. Getting one out on hire and trying it yourself is ... MoreIt is a simple review. Getting one out on hire and trying it yourself is the best way of finding if this lens is indeed what you need. You can read all the reviews and field tests you like, at the end of the day it's how you work and how the lens works for you that really matters. That's all I have to say.
