A very nice lens I rented to try out on my Z7ii via the FTZ adapter. It is surprisingly sharp in the center wide open even out to 200mm. The focus is quick but not quite as quick as some of the newer generation lenses. The zoom ring was a little loose but it didn't get in my way shooting portraits all day.It doesn't weigh a ton and it's not a huge lens. I wish the VR functioned more like it did on my DSLR bodies in that it only activates when you half-press the shutter/AF-ON button, instead of just being on all of the time that the switch is in the on position. No big deal since you can flick it on/off pretty quickly and easily. The experience with Lensrentals was a smooth as ever, and the packaging they provide for the gear is second to none.

This lens is fantastic! I had been debating between this and Nikons 2.8 version and opted to purchase the f4 primarily due to price, but also the very good reviews and recommendations/suggestions from others. Aside from saving $1000 over the 2.8, I have not yet found that I have lost anything in the bargain. Yes, I realize there may be times when I wish I had the 2.8 but being able to adjust the ISO on my D7000 that time has not yet come. Images are razor sharp with very little vignetting or distortion and the colors are vibrant. Yes, vibrant. When you add that to the weight being about half of the 2.8, due to no tripod collar and less glass, this lens is one that will be staying with me for a long time to come. When you add that to the weight being about half of the 2.8, due to no tripod collar and less glass, this lens is one that will be staying with me for a long time to come. Speaking of the tri-pod collar - the balance without it is such that when I use my Manfrotto 3221W tri-pod with the 804RC2 pan/tilt head it is really a non-issue. And, as Nikon continues to improve on their already great VR (Vibration Reduction) technology, this f4, with the latest generation VR, really does not need a tri-pod in the vast majority of shots I have taken, or will be taking. For those times when it is quite dark, yes, I would need the tri-pod, as well as for some video shoots. But, when you want, or need, to walk around shooting with this lens that reduction in weight (the lens as well as the tri-pod) is totally priceless. The 70-200 will produce slightly better bokeh (background blur) in almost all cases but that also depends on circumstances. I have been quite pleased with the results I have achieved thus far. The construction of the lens seems very good. Yes, mostly plastic, but isnt almost everything nowadays. If you dont accidentally drop it you should be fine. Focusing is quite smooth, and fast, and the lens hunts very very little. That it is only a 67mm lens (as opposed to 77mm size of the 2.8) will save a little cash on ND, UV and/or CPL filters. I use Hoya filters and they screw on and off effortlessly. And, like all Nikon lenses, it attaches to the body in a snap. For many people, like me, this is an absolutely incredible lens, especially for the price (and weight) difference. Highly recommended.

Half the weight of the 2.8's; satisfying sharpness.

About half the weight of the 2.8's. Very sharp on my Z7 (particularly around f/5.6-6.3). Able to stuff in backpack for long walks which I never did with my 80-200 2.8; it always ends up in the trunk. Only competition for this lens on Nikon Z's (for long walks) would be the Z 24-200, which I have not bought yet (unless you're half my age and stronger). I used this lens often (not as much as my Z 24-70 2.8) on my recent trip to three national parks in USA.

This lens nails the focus with AF Fine Tune set to 0, at all focal lengths, on my D810. The images have excellent contrast and resolution, to the point that with the TC14 E-II at an effective 280mm it nearly matches the image quality of my 300mm f/2.8 AFS VR-II. (Of course the 300 is hardly even getting started when used without a TC). And the zoom + TC is tremendously lighter and a good bit smaller than my 300. It will save me lugging the big beast from time to time. These observations were made while using it on a D810.The VR on this zoom is stunning. It's just possible to get tack sharp 1/5th second handheld images at 200mm. Doing the same at 1/10th second is just plain easy. I actually selected "indoors low light" as a best use because it consistently gives me a good image inside a normally lit home, without having to add a light source. The Bokeh is very passable. Not the absolute leader but it won't offend either. I rated the build "durable" because "strong" and "rugged" sound like what you'd call a hammer. Don't buy any camera lens if what you really want is a hammer. I'm not at all worried about the construction.f/4 "Trinity"? Not quite. It's more of a duo. The 70-200 f/4 and the 16-35 f/4 are well matched in control layout and handling. The image quality and VR on the longer lens are better though. The 24-120 is the odd one out. The rings are opposite, it's front heavy, and it is lower in image quality. I had one but sold it.

Quite Pleased With This Lens
13 July 2016

I have the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VRII, but that's sometimes a little too much to lug around. This lens is about an inch shorter, a little over half the weight, uses 67mm filters instead of 77mm, and is slimmer. Sure; you lose one f-stop, and that might be important if you're really looking for subject isolation. But being a stop slower is less of a concern now that when the lens was introduced because cameras that have come out since that time (late 2012) are able to acceptably handle one stop higher ISOs.I've used this on both my D500 and D7200 shooting sports and static subjects (some in very dim light at speeds as low as 1/25, hand held) and am very happy with the results. This lens does not come with a collar. If you think you'd like a collar, for about the same price as the Nikon collar, you can get a Kirk Photo collar with more forward support and an Arca-Swiss dovetailed foot. I shoot with the foot resting on my left palm, which leaves my fingers free to operate the zoom.I'm glad I talked myself into buying this lens ;-) and, as always, the staff here was a pleasure to deal with.

Refurbish Quality questionable

This is a wonderful lens. I've been using one that a friend had while we were travelling together, and decided to replace my old 70-300VR with it after I saw the results.I do have to say that I find the lens fairly expensive, especially when considering that the tripod mount is not included, so getting a deal with the refurbished model seemed great (even though the 90-day warranty is a bit of a show stopper in retrospect). It looked great wide open initially (some test portraits), but after I tested it against the 70-300VR (actually more out of curiosity, before selling the 70-300VR - I'm usually not a pixel peeper), it became clear that something was VERY wrong with the particular copy that I had gotten.About 1/3 of the frame, mostly the lower right area, had ... MoreThis is a wonderful lens. How something like that leaves Nikon's repair center as "refurbished" is beyond my comprehension. It's quite obviously decentered. (I have actually made VERY good experiences with Nikon repairs, those lenses that needed service for one reason or another came back performing better than even when they were "factory new").I would give the lens a 5-star rating, I really like it, but this particular experience with a refurbished item (that I would indeed expect to perform great since it's been serviced and refurbished by Nikon) leaves me scratching my head, and I'm hesitant now to buy a Nikon refurbished item again.

As such, I looked at the usual suspects: Nikon 70-300, Tamron 70-300, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and f4.I settled on the Nikon 70-200 f4, as it strikes a good balance of speed, weight and claimed performance. I have tried this with 1.4x, 1.7x and 2x Nikon teleconverters with impressive results, though of course aperture is reduced accordingly. That brings me to the main downside - price. However you look at this, it is expensive compared to the alternatives, even looking expensive next to the f2.8, which offers better build ( though the f4 is not flimsy) and of course the extra stop of shutter speed, for not a lot more. However, that lens was too heavy for my needs (I have access to an f2.8 and it is an impractical option on a lightweight DX format camera, such as my present D5100) and interestingly, the f4 offers much longer focal lengths at near-focus ranges (where the f2.8 cuts this down). The brace of 70-300 options are appealing and offer the extra 100mm reach for much less and I have seen excellent results from both these lenses. However the extra speed, better build and possibility to use with Nikons TC, make this worthy of the extra for the keen enthusiast, particularly if you are looking to upgrade bodies in the future, or are already a full-frame user. Even on a "lowly" D5100, images are so nicely resolved, cropping an area from a shot is perfectly usable.Overall, a superb addition to the Nikon range and sure to delight anyone taking the plunge!

Overall a nice lens and when working as it should, an excellent lens. I have many other Nikon lenses and have been pleased so far. My latest buy, though, has gone sour. The lens upto 135mm is fine past that its soft - close or long so not dof. This lens is bought for its reach and though 70mm etc are useful, it'll be 200mm where it is manily used and that is where this lens fails.Reviews tend to emphasise the long end as being very good. So this is not normal or acceptable.Needless to say I will return it and try another. I hate lens tennis but it's worth a few tries...

Super sharp Nikon lens
27 February 2019

I just bought this well looked after used example for use with my D610 body. I wanted the f/2.8, but knew it is a lot heavier, and with arthritis in my shoulders, weight is a factor. This lens is better than expected. So sharp. I used to have a Sigma 150-500, and in the equivalent focal length, this gem of a Nikon is superior. I had taken the time to read the reviews of this lens on various sites, and Im happy to report that theyre accurate- just like the lens. Some images were necessary to crop of cars, and the sharpness, not only at the centre, but all around is superb. Im one happy new owner. I highly recommend this lens.

This lens is amazingly lightweight and sharp compared to its big brother: 70-200 mm f 2.8. It is a better quality autofocus and VR than the bigger lenses for only a one stop sacrifice. And the best news is it is a constant aperture throughout the zoom range. Helpful for my work. The best news is the price is reasonable as well. It is a great bargain! The first photo example is hand held at 1/10 second at f10 at 105mm with a Nikon D-600 FX body, Tinker Falls sharpened only a little.
