Probably my last DSL before everything goes mirrorless but this camera is worth it. As a long time Nikon DSL user, the immediate learning curve is quick. Very good layout. I was surprised by how light and actually small the body was. Everyone says mirrorless bodies are so much more compact but I don't find the D780 to be heavy or cumbersome at all. Besides needing a major upgrade in tech and going full frame, high on my list were focusing systems and low light capability. This camera does both very well. It's first real workout was shooting swimming at an indoor pool for my daughter's swim team. Low light and fast action, so this was a good test. Regarding battery life, I shot heavy for two hours and the battery indicator might have moved one notch. I have one 64gig memory card which yields 1.2k exposures (raw). And to think there are actually dual cards slots so you have a ton of space to shoot. (I don't do video). The display screen is awesome for review and you can scroll through the many picture review options (depending on what you set in the menu) that we are all familiar with; histograms, highlights, focus, etc. The touch screen zoom is great for checking focus. I am looking forward to digging in a little more as time goes on but I can tell this camera will be great for some time to come and glad I finally upgraded.

I am very impressed with this full frame camera. This is my first full frame camera and I do own a Nikon D7500. The menu is pretty similar to by D7500 so the learning curve short. The camera build is exceptional and the camera has many capabilities. Focusing and frame rates are quite good and the grip is deep enough for my large and long fingers. The only drawback that I have is Nikon neglected to add the ability of a vertical battery grip. There is a non OEM brand on the market but you have to use an external cable so the grip communicates with the camera.I would highly recommend this camera to someone who wants the best of still and video photography.

I bought the D780 to use in addition to my D810. I'm VERY pleased. Live view with continuous on sensor phase detect autofocus and eye detect is a game changer for portrait photography. The silent shutter is amazing for creating time lapse movies without wearing out the mechanical shutter. Focus peaking works great for my manual focus lens collection. 4k oversampled video quality is outstanding and if you are willing to give up the oversampling the digital image stabilization makes a big difference in hand held video smoothness on lenses without image stabilization. Because I use a D810 I was concerned that I wouldn't be happy with pixel acuity on the D780 due to the antialiasing filter on the sensor. My images look good when I import them and process them in Lightroom and Photoshop at 25%. When I zoom to 100% is where I notice the images aren't sharp and are fuzzy.Trees farther back in my landscape images and details in buildings is where I notice it most. Part of this is due to the fact that In some of my shots I was using a low quality Tamron wide angle lens so this softness is to be expected with that.However, I also use a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens which is an excellent lens and still have the softness issue. Not as bad as with the Tamron but still have it. I didn't have this issue in my D810. Luckily I still have that camera as a backup.While it doesn't have the articulating touch screen display, it takes much better images.

I started off shooting astrophotos from a tripod without tracking, lots of short exposures stacked and processed, but I have since added an iOptron SkyGuider Pro to my tools to do longer exposures. The first of two astrophotos that I've uploaded is the Pleiades star cluster, using 1.3s exposures at 120mm with the lens that came with the kit. This is as long as I could go without star trails. The M42 (Orion Nebula) picture is with tracking using stacked 3 minute exposures, which would not be possible with most cameras without buying an external shutter control device, at 120mm with the lens that came with the kit, stopped down to f/6.3. The battery lasts long enough for me to capture 2-3 hours of light frames and 1.5 hours of dark frames, which is nice, although I do plan to get spare batteries for travel and even longer imaging sessions.I have not done any astrophotography or even general photography before now. I am very excited with starting off this hobby. I have ordered a telescope and larger tracking mount to move on to longer focal length shots, but that can be done with larger lenses, too.My only complaint with this purchase is the included bag. The bag itself is very nice. It is the Ruggard Hunter 35 holster bag. It states that it fits cameras up to semi pro sizes, but depending on your lens, the D780 is either going to barely fit, or not fit at all. I did also buy a Sigma 35mm Art lens. The Sigma lens fits in the bag with the camera, but just barely, and the lens cap likes to fall off from getting depressed on the bottom of the bag. That said, the Sigma lens came with it's own bag, so I have a nice bag for it.My big issue is the camera kit with the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm lens does not come with a nice hard case/bag for the lens, and the camera with the kit lens does not fit in this bag well. Looking at the included pictures, you can see that you have to tug on the zipper to get it closed. This is with the lens hood removed and the camera body straps removed. It was tight enough that I did not feel comfortable zipping it all the way closed with the kit lens on. You can see the viewfinder sticking above the zipper line in one picture. You can also see the camera side by side with the bag, also with the lens hood removed. If the lens hood is on the lens, even flipped around, then it definitely does not want to fit in the bag.This is probably nitpicking, especially considering it did not add to the cost of the kit any, and many people probably already have nice bags for their cameras already, but I was a little disappointed in not having a bag that fits the camera with the included kit lens well. I'll be looking for another bag for my camera and lens before I travel any with my camera, so this bag will probably not see any use with this camera. The Ruggard 45 would probably be a better fit as it is just slightly taller to fit that kit lens. The Ruggard 55 would definitely fit the camera body, but it might be a little loose.All in all, great camera, lens is nice and gives a good bit of options for someone who does not already have gear. Shipping was prompt, and the camera, Sigma lens, and other included items in the kit were packaged well. Great experience overall, just disappointed in having to get another bag right away.

The Nikon D780 is a great camera for photography and even pretty good for video. Everything on it for photography is easy to use and just works so well! Video is nice too, but the main downside is you can't record N-log on the camera (you have to record onto an external monitor) and it lacks the more advanced image stabilization of many modern mirrorless cameras. If you prefer SLR style shooting over looking through a mirrorless LCD like I do and only need to do the occasional video work on it, then this camera is fantastic choice, but best to look at other options if you mainly need to do video.And Lensrentals was great and made the whole renting process smooth and easy! The camera arrived early, was well-packaged, and in great condition!
I debated upgrading my camera for a very long time. I knew I wanted to, but I was scared to pull the trigger due to the extra expense so I worked with what I had been using for years which was the Nikon D7200. I was ready to go full frame but again wasn't sure if I should since my camera was still going strong. Well, I took the leap, and WOW what a difference in quality and functionality! Now I kick myself for not taking the leap sooner. I am in love with this camera and it's so nice to have a touch screen. The autofocus tracking system is amazing even from a far distance it still kept up with my subject. Overall, Nikon is top-notch when it comes to DSLRs. I'm very happy with my purchase and I look forward to shooting again!

It arrived in Portland OR Thursday afternoon but sat there until Monday morning. 2-day shipping turned into 5 days. Bad FedEx.Packaging was mostly okay, but the camera was in thin bubble wrap with the ability to move freely inside the white Nikon refurb box. Would expect a little bit better than that.Right out of the bag, I could feel the cheapness of the body compared to the D7500. It feels lighter and more plastic-y. Battery also reports as being brand new.Having said all of that, when I couple the D780 with the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens, the results have been phenomenal. I knew to expect improvement using the full frame Tamron lens on a full frame Nikon body compared to the DX D7500, but they were beyond my expectations. I have taken some really nice pics with this lens and the D7500, but now my expectations and excitement to use the D780 body are quite high. The clarity/sharpness and the colors are outstanding. The ISO performance in low lighting is very good. Even with only 24.something megapixels, reasonable cropping of images hasn't caused any noticeable loss of image quality. Good Nikon. Good Tamron.My real intent on getting the D780 was for the carried over from the Z 6 video capabilities to do astrophotography / nighttime time lapses, unfortunately, here in the PNW, November was a very cloudy rainy month with little opportunity to try it out. I am looking forward to using the silent mode to capture long astrophotography time lapses and not increase the shutter count, and I will continue to enjoy the still photo results I have seen so far. The D7500 doesn't have a low pass filter, where the D780 does, so it will be interesting to see if I can see any differences in detail between the two cameras taking the same images of the sky at night.I hope not to have to buy another camera body again for a very long time, however, I really hope Nikon reverses direction in using cheaper materials. Given the toy-ish feel of this camera body, I'm glad I bought at a refurb price. I would have been willing to pay full price for a new one (or even more) if the same level of quality of the D7500 was there. This doesn't feel like a $2300 camera. Good thing the features and image quality are there.
