Absolutely love this camera! I have been wanting the D850 for years and finally got it as a birthday gift for myself. As an average photographer who is still learning all the things this camera is capable of, I have to say the initial setup was fairly simple and was out shooting only a few hours later. For the events, I go for expressions and action, and don't pay a lot of attention to exact cropping. I do that in post. With the 750's I had some headroom to work with, but sometimes I'd end up with grain due to enlarging too much.With the 850, with 45megapixels to play, I'm getting amazing resolution without losing anything.With the D750's, like most digital cameras, if you over exposed, you're hosed. While I try to underexpose slightly, with the 850, it seems more forgiving when exposing hot. I bought this camera a few months ago as an upgrade to my D750 but waited until now to rate it to have some real experience to be able to report on. There is nothing I dislike about this camera. Here is why I love it vs. the D750 which I loved to use too:Features: I use photo stacking for Macro and find the Nikon set up on the D850 easy to use. There are other features I have yet to explore.Focus Area Coverage: It is much wider than the D750, so it is easier to use off center focus points. I really like this camera model. That being said, I now think I may want to invest in a brand new model. I have only rented Lenses, in the past, from Lens Rental. My experience is they arrived in excellent condition. This camera body was rated with a 3 and 4, I believe. The sensor appears spotless and the mechanics all seem to be without flaw. My camera that I am replacing is more that 10 yrs old. The body looks great. This D850 body has more flaws than I am happy with. It may just be that I misunderstood the description provided in the advertisement for it. The biggest down side is this camera smells horrible! I have had it for 9 days and I can still smell it when I walk in the room where the camera is. I don’t know what you all are using to sanitize your stuff, ... MoreI really like this camera model. Even my D750, is a beast to be recon with, when it comes to being able to handle all forms of photography brilliantly. Yes the D850 is a large camera ( no problem for me, my hands aren't small ) but that adds to stability with large lenses when needed. It has the best hand grip, for better camera control. But aside from the obvious, this machine is unmatched in price for superior performance, even by its D6 big brother, without the high price. It is super in video as well, if you are doing both. For me, the main advantage of mirrorless cameras is the electronic viewfinder; what you see is exactly what you'll get in the final photograph. The d850 is my first DSLR, and I'm having to learn that my pictures won't look exactly like what I see through the viewfinder. However, there are some drawbacks to mirrorless as well: drastically inferior battery life, slower autofocus, and more expensive lenses just to name a few. I was also bothered by the fact that mirrorless cameras are unlikely to hold their value over time. The Z6 and Z7 have now been replaced by the Z6ii and the Z7ii, significantly eroding their resale value. Rather than buying a mid-range mirrorless camera that may soon be overshadowed by a newer model, I decided to get the best DSLR ever made - and I haven't regretted it for a second.
This camera incorporates all of the great controls and ergonomics that Nikon has fine-tuned over the decades and basically couples that meets or exceeds the resolution of medium format film. It took me a little while to get my head around this fact...but in comparisons, it's undeniable. Mirrorless tech will be great when it reaches maturity, but for my purposes I don't see any clear advantages at this stage, and a few potential disadvantages (startup lag, reduced battery life, rolling shutter, etc.). In summary: even including RZ67 Pro IIs, Hasselblads, etc -- the Nikon D850 might be the very best still camera I've ever used. It delivers amazing quality in an extremely smart, comfortable, rugged form factor. It'sreally that good.
Prior to buying this I had a D810 for ~7 years that worked flawlessly. Within the past year I purchased both the newest 24-70 and 70-200 lenses and started to be fanatic about sharpness. With both of those lenses on the D810 I saw a marked improvement over the 28-300 I was shooting with for years, but still saw some grain when you are cropping / examining minor details. With the D850 in my first round of edits I am pretty amazed at the difference!There are other minor upgrades of course - the backlit buttons is a nice feature and the controls just all feel perfect. I was in the market to either sell everything and convert to mirrorless, but decided to reinvest in DSLR by buying this camera and probably won't be purchasing something again for 10 years now. I am a professional photographer. I have been looking at this camera since it came out. I have been shooting with Nikon cameras since the 80's and have been very impressed with Nikon line. I have also bought all versions of this camera. The D800, which was a huge improvement and was amazing with it's 36 megapixel images, then bought the D810 thinking that the D800 would be a secondary camera but when I got the 810 found that the pictures and colors were so much better it was hard to use the D800 as a secondary camera because the D810 was so much better. Then got this D850. I have not had the chance to really give it a work out yet but not surprising the D850 has so much mor features and seems to take better pictures in dark areas. I have been shooting with Nikon cameras since the 80's and have been very impressed with Nikon line. I have also bought all versions of this camera. The D800, which was a huge improvement and was amazing with it's 36 megapixel images, then bought the D810 thinking that the D800 would be a secondary camera but when I got the 810 found that the pictures and colors were so much better it was hard to use the D800 as a secondary camera because the D810 was so much better. Then got this D850. I have not had the chance to really give it a work out yet but not surprising the D850 has so much mor features and seems to take better pictures in dark areas. Again did not have a chance to really give this camera a workout yet. But if you buy this camera you will not be disappointed. Plus I got it an amazing price the list price is normally 3000.00 got it on sale at Best Buy for 2499.00. By the way I was contemplating on going with the z9 mirrorless camera but if I did, I would have to change out all my remote triggers, flashes, TTL Phottix Indra 500 studio lights and lenses. I could use the studio lights but would lose the TTL features. If you are going to get the any of the Full Frame camera's you need to buy the professional grade lenses. The professional grade lenses are like night and day. You can use your older 2.8 professional lenses on the z9 but you will have to buy the adapter which makes the lenes much longer and heavier and eventually you will need to buy the larger mount lenses for the z9.
