After Two Months

I have used this lens now for two months, and I have not taken it off my camera since I bought it. I love the 1.4 aperture, especially in low light situations. It is a great little walk around lens. It does have a little issue with ghosting, but nothing that I cannot work around in post.

Great Lens, Classic Rendering

Really impressed with this lens - it’s a classic rendering with great bokeh that’s full of character. Nice alternative to the S Line lenses which are technically perfect but have a little less personality. Pairs well with the Zf body.

I'm quite pleased with this new f/1.4 35mm lens. It is light, not too large, easily balanced on either my Z7 or Z8. If it isn't as sharp as the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S lens, I can live with that for the extra light coming in. However, so far with a limited test, the sharpness is just fine, even at f/1.4 (although yes, the corners are a bit soft). Best lens purchase this year for me!

Incredible quality for the price
23 September 2024

I've been looking for a good lens to replace the 24-50mm kit lens that came with my Nikon Z5. I have the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4, and was hoping to find a similar quality lens in a 35mm.I was hesitant to buy this lens because the price seemed too good to be true, but I'm so happy I did! I have previously shot with my friend's Sony 35mm f/1.4, and I believe this lens can hold it's own against it, and for half the price!Great quality, images are super sharp especially compared to the kit lens. I've been using it for a few weeks and have loved the performance!

Nice and compact prime lens
5 September 2024

Images from this lens are sharp. Colors are beautiful. Bokeh is good. Surprisingly small for a f1.4 AF lens from Nikon. Fits in a 3 liter sling bag w/ a Nikon Zf.

Perfect walk around prime
16 September 2024

I bought this lens right before a trip to Europe as a walk-around prime for my Z8 and I absolutely loved the results. It was great having the extra stops of light vs. the 24-120 f4 I also brought and the rendering of this lens is perfect for street photography and cityscapes. Even without being an S lens, it still feels solid and performs wonderfully!

Street Savvy
4 August 2024

I read reviews, I watched YouTube videos, and then I pulled the trigger and purchased this nice lens for my Zf to mainly use for my street photography adventures. I have several S lenses including the 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 which are insanely sharp. But instead of going with the 35mm f1.8, I decided I wanted a lens that, althoughnot as tack sharp, had its own personality. The price was also attractive. So far, in limited use, I am extremely happy with the 35mm f1.4. Nicely balanced on my Zf. I use the control ring (which is not on the f1.8) for aperture. IMO, the bokeh is very nice. I have yet to give it a spin on my Zfc (where it would be a 52mm equivalent) but imagine it will work well. These sample photos are not SOOC as I mainly shoot RAW and edit in LR. I also have the Z 40mm f2 lens which, currently, is feeling a bit neglected since the 35 arrived. If you want extra sharpness, less chromatic aberration, and better weather sealing, go with the f1.8. I haven’t noticed too much Chromaticaberration yet, and it is easily corrected in LR. Happy shooting.

Super fast, sharp, and great bokeh to the edge
3 September 2024

This lens has a superpower. Bokeh balls, the round out of focus dots, remain almost round up the the edge. The only other lens I know that does this is the Nikon Plena. With fast f1.4 this provides beautiful bokeh across the whole field without “cats eyes” past the center. It may seem strange, but this lens works well for whole body portraiture, especially at f1.4, giving an “intimate” aesthetic. Unfortunately the lens has a normal amount of vignetting for a wide angle, it is not a Plena in that way. So the bokeh balls are smaller in the corners. For years beginning in the 1980s I carried the then popular Nikkor 35mm f1.4. This Z lens is dramatically sharper wide open. It is not perfect, but I like the gentle way it is imperfect. For environmental this very fast full field lens gives you a new vision not possible with any slower zoom lens. In the 1950s I enjoyed the Angenieux 35mm f2.5 on an Exacta. I’ve always felt this angle gives a natural perspective that feels like you can walk into the picture. For the f1.4 brightness, and remembering Z lenses must be 1.2” longer than F lenses to make up for the flange distance, this lens is remarkably small. I can keep it in my bag. I have never seen a lens with a concave front element. Or a lens with a bigger back element than front. If this was on an F mount, many elements would be way inside where the mirror is. This formula is totally impossible on an F mount. Nikon must be having fun.And I’m having fun exploring what I can make with it!

WOW!!!!!
7 August 2024

I was not expecting this. Most of the internet bable was lukewarm at the best. This lens performs far better than expected. The F/1.4 bokeh is really nice, and the portrait fall off is right on. This lens draws very well. It is just like my 35mm f/1.4 ai-s, except it autofocuses. Wow1

good value with classic rendering
5 September 2024

This lens has a classic rendering / bokeh to it. It's not clinically sharp like the S lenses are, but still acceptably sharp. My only issue with the lens is that, like all modern nikon lenses, it's a plastic tube..... and it's boring / ugly. With that said, the focusing works great and its not too large given it's 1.4 aperture.
