Before I went mirrorless, my favorite lens was Nikon’s dx 55-300mm f-mount lens. Getting this new NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm lens is quite the replacement. It does go up to 6.3 quickly, somewhere around 175-200mm.Again, it's not bad for the price and is a good starter zoom lens for people not wanting to spend $400+. The effective range is 75-375mm on Nikon's APS-C mirrorless cameras, which are only the Z50 and Zfc (a rumored Z30 is just around the corner).I've taken good photos and the VR helps with handheld lowlight/night shots. Not quite as good as having IBIS in the camera, still better than nothing. I recommend this lens for anyone starting out or for people traveling who only want to bring 2 total lenses.

I will say, I had a bit of help from Reddit. A kind stranger in the Nikon subreddit, mentioned that B&H had the lens back in stock. Luckily I was able to react fast enough, I bought the lens. This is an excellent lens. I think the reviews comparing it to the former 200-400 f/4 are accurate. This is +/- equal in terms of sharpness, but is much faster in focusing. (You have to be careful about how you select the focus parameters in the camera, though.) It is lighter and handles much easier than the 200-400. It's not a prime, it has some minor drawbacks, but overall it's a very suitable replacement, especially given the cost of the original 200-400. When you can't plan how close you're going to be to the action, zooms are about the only choice. Nice that you can pull back to 100mm, but I'm not a big fan of external zooms with variable f/stops. Bokeh is fair to good. Really can't go wrong on this one. I put a bunch of stuff into sports magazines with the ... MoreThis is an excellent lens. Assigning subject tracking to Fn1 or Fn2 or the ISO button would be IDEAL currently its only set to the Ok button on the multi selector, or via the touch screen. A lot of pros are asking Nikon to get some more Z lenses out, but this isnt a factor for me plenty of amazing F mount lenses around, and their current Z lens lineup has my needs more than covered. A dedicated AFON button would be super, but honestly Im using BBF much much less on this Z 50 the focusing system is a game changer.So overall, Im really enjoying this Z 50 and Im very impressed. So much so that Ive deleted my fullframe DSLR wish list in my BH account, and replaced it with a Z 6 wish list, ifwhen I decide to go fullframe. I might be done purchasing new DSLRs it feels weird even saying that.. and happily committed to mirrorless.

It definitely slows down the process of photographing. Nikon has also implemented this annoying characteristic on the smaller kit lens, the Z DX 16-50mm (which also has outstanding image quality). The NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is light in weight although very plasticky, and when it is collapsed does rattle slightly. The rattle does not seem to indicate a problem with the lens.Due to its light weight the lens balances perfectly on the Z50, even when fully extended to 250mm. All in all this lens is outstanding with great image quality. The worst thing about the NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is that Nikon does NOT include a lens hood, which you will definitely need, and they charge $35 separately for it; but you can get around that by using one from VELLO ( HB-90A) at B&H for less than half the Nikon price.
I recently purchased the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D810 as I do a lot of hiking (and occasional street photography) and have missed many opportunities to capture wildlife or other shots simply by being too far away. I lamented for a while since most good zoom lenses are priced out of my budget range. When I realized this lens was not only something I could afford but also had great reviews, I jumped at buying it!I am so glad I did. MoreI recently purchased the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D810 as I do a lot of hiking (and occasional street photography) and have missed many opportunities to capture wildlife or other shots simply by being too far away. It is very light, which is nice. I also find the VR is quite good when extending the zoom.Overall, I am plenty happy with this purchase! I am excited to get out on the hiking trail very soon to really give this baby a proper initiation, but I have every confidence already that I will not lose any opportunities that I had missed before!
In carefully testing this otherwise excellent lens, I started noticing a very odd behavior in backgrounds when the lens was set above 200mm and wide open. When I focus on a subject which is in front of a background having many thin linear elements (like blades of grass or tree branches), these background elements do not have a typical bokeh but, instead, they look doubled, strange as that sounds. And no, it is NOT motion blur from wind, as these test shots were taken with a Z7 on a calm day, repeated multiple times (with identical outcome), using a high shutter speed and electronic shutter with 3 second delay on my sturdy RRS tripod. I have never before seen a lens produce such artifacts. Maybe it is just a bad copy of this lens? But I think I may have seen vestiges ... But I think I may have seen vestiges of the same phenomenon in certain shots in professional reviews (such as by Spencer Cox at Photography Life, though he did not mention this phenomenon), which may mean this might be a characteristic of this lens under certain circumstances. One might not encounter this scenario often but now that I see it, I cannot un-see it -- it looks bad. I will be returning this lens, which upsets me because otherwise it seems like a great lens (except for the foot which fits very loosely onto the collar; bad Nikon design there).
