If Nikon were just to make a Z 70-200 f4, it would be great.Overall, the Z7II is a slightly better camera but in terms of picture quality, there is little to no difference, so if budget is an issue you lose precious little getting a Z7 instead. I'm very happy with mine and will probably not upgrade until necessary.

I spent 2 weeks shooting with the camera and found the following:Superb image quality - high resolution and color rendition equal to D850.The new 24-70 S lens is very sharp and has excellent edge to edge sharpness, even wide open.Very high resolution EVF.The adapter works well with G lenses but does not auto focus with D or older lenses. Nikon has done some great things with the Z7 that keeps it competitive in 2023. For one, the firmware update brought a highly responsive eye tracking feature which helps me out in portrait photography. It still struggles a bit on focusing a subject in low light condition but the eye tracking makes up for it. Come from a D800, which is no slough, the Z7 is a nice upgrade. Now my images are sharper than before.Docked a star because the only card it accepts is CFExpress Type B. My current magazine of memory cards are SDXC or CompactFlash.

Being able to use all my previous lenses and all my Prophoto lighting gear that is dedicated to Nikon was absolutely amazing. The camera performed flawlessly. Images have almost as Medium format camera looks to them. I shot handheld video with my 105mm f/1.4 lens and while shooting video I was taking pictures and photo/Video looks amazing. I can tell you I have been using XQD cards sine D4 time and I use it now with my D5 and I use a second card slot for overflow purpose...XQD is a great, reliable, fast card. Never had an issue with that. I guess I can go on, but suffice to say, I am extremely happy with the lightweight monster that I can take anywhere. I am beyond happy with Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera. I have preorder Z6 as well for my backup & for a more dedicated video camera.

I wouldn't say I am a "Pro" but i have been shooting for at least 3 years.This is an excellent start for Nikon entering the mirrorless market. It obviously has it's flaws but has so much to offer if you can look passed them.The biggest issue people have is that there is only 1 card slot. I personally don't have an issue with this since I carry my D850 with me just in case and use the Z7 for mostly personal work/enjoyment. In low light it performs well and is surprisingly great at higher iso's. There are differences in how you handle key settings like WB and Metering, but the new little, customizable i-button is simple, easy to use and intuitive.Focus Accuracy — while the acquisition speed and low-light performance of AF is not always as capable as D850, there is little to quibble about focus accuracy. With focus points stretching across the EVF, very few missed-focusing mistakes as compared to prior Nikons.Video - on a purely “grab-n-go-shoot” basis, the Z7 is the first Nikon I can use without thinking twice about settings, stability, or file output. It works very well and appears to have features that will be useful when pushed to higher levels.IBIS - this is a huge plus, and I am finding IBIS to be a game-changer, better than VR lenses on the D850. Which brings me to a system feature:FTZ adapter is terrific. Using the FTZ, IBIS is going to bring your old glass to new use, and make some of your F-mount lenses better than ever.S-Line lenses. The 24-70mm F/4 is wonderful. I have used this lens in commercial applications, video, daily street shooting, and events. Paired with the Z7 it is discreet, light, versatile and the image quality is superb. This gives me great confidence that the future lens roadmap will add S-line lenses not because they fit a Z, but because they will be better than the F-mount options.?Less than D850- AF controls: I miss AF on the side of the D850. The Z7 puts AF within the i-button, 1 of 10 options. Switching from AF-S to AF-C is not as fast on Z7.- AF acquisition speed and low-light, I have not tried AF with a native prime S-line lens like the 35mm F/1.8S, but initial acquisition of focus can lag behind the D850. This could also be a function of the eco-system of Z7 — EVF. But D850 seems faster in acquiring initial focus, especially in low light. Once Z7 snaps into focus it keeps it there, and can track faces and animals, even in dusk.- Third party lenses - I have Sigma Art lenses that work great, and Tamron G2 lenses with Error messages and don’t work as of 10/28/18.- Tripod use — this might just be a matter of time, but I keep an L-bracket on my D850 for all landscape, architectural and real estate use, which gives the D850 a clear role and I have all the F-mount lenses for that work, no need to replicate it on the Z. Currently awaiting RRS to introduce a custom bracket for the Z. The FTZ adapter does have a 1/4” hole in the base for a tripod plate. You can use an Arca-swiss plate on the bottom of the Z body while using the FTZ adapter, it’s tight but it works.What about “no dual card slots”? Well, I have used XQD cards on D850 and D500 with zero incidents. I have run them through the laundry by accident, no problems. I do shoot weddings and my plan for redundancy is multiple cameras, flashes, lenses, tripods and shooters when necessary. So if the standard is, “Anything can happen and we need to be 100% safe” then we should not even go outside before shooting the next wedding or else we risk the delivery of output to the bride! That aside, I prefer all the benefits the engineers saved in size, weight, ergonomics, speed, battery life (it uses the same batteries as D850) and lens geometry rather than a safety SD card slot.?I was on the fence for most of 2018, watching Sony’s well-received mirrorless options hitting next generation cycles, and Fuji cameras looking better and better. Nikon Z has answered the call, the FTZ ensures my legacy lenses are all in the bag. And, for my part, the S-line lenses are the first step in what appears to be a raising of the bar, beyond Sony and Fuji, targeting perhaps Leica, or preparing for 100MP in a 36x24 sensor, for overall superior optics over the next 10 years.

Everyone was quite nice, but I was only given a very general idea, not the actual shutter count. I assumed it would be under 8000. Why the mystery?Basically, I couldn't get the info needed to evaluate price before buying, and couldn't negotiate because of that. I went ahead because of LR reputation and my experience renting from them. B&H had a used Z7 in similar condition with under 7000 clicks for the same price the next week. Having grown up in the age of film and all manual cameras I am not massively impressed by auto features. But in this case the camera is incredible, any true professional will have no problem using this incredibly capable camera.Download the reference guide to better gauge what it can do.The 24-70 f4 is a lightweight walkabout lens with wonderful resolution.The real joy though is that I can use all of my favourite Nikon lenses and even, using a novoflex adapter, my Leica M series lenses. Well done Nikon, the future for serious photography just became more interesting.
I rented the Nikon Z 7 and FTC adaptor. As is typical with Lens Rentals, the items arrived on time, well packed, and in excellent condition.This review is more about Lens Rentals than the Nikon Z 7. I can't do a very detailed review on the Z7 and the FTC adaptor at this time, but I will say that as a result of renting the and experiencing the Z7, I've gone ahead and purchased the Z 7ii.I have been shooting Nikon Pro-body SLR's and DSLR's since 1980 so I did purchase a battery-case/grip as well. Even with the additional grip, the camera weighs less than my Nikon D4S. The Z 7 was fast, delivered excellent images and video. Easy, fast, and extremely well-priced. The equipment I've rented was always in very good to nearly brand-new condition. Only once have I received an item that was not working, (a Sigma lens interface module). I called and they noted the DOA after reaching the same conclusion I did.They would have express-shipped another one to me if I wanted it but I didn't really need it so I asked them not to. I've also purchased numerous items that I've rented from LR and have always been surprised at how easy the process was.The prices to buy a rental item could not be more fair and you get to try the item as a rental before deciding to buy it. If you like it and buy it, they wave the rental fees 100%! You just can't get a better deal than that and that's a fact!Rich
