Your waterproof footwear could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. Through use, the outer surface of footwear will pick up contaminants, such as dirt, which attract water. This masks the effect of any Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, leading to footwear 'wetting out' in wet or damp conditions. Cleaning waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt, but also revitalize DWR, causing water to bead on the outer surface once more.

This stuff works really well and it very easy to use. I used it to scrub and clean some leather boots before adding in the Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather. I think Nikwax recently updated the scrub applicator that is on the Footwear Cleaning Gel bottle. You just flip the bottle upside down and scrub away! It's amazing how fast the suds will start to remove all the mud and oils. Other than some scuffs that I previously had in the boots, the leather looked as good as it could get after I finished cleaning. After applying the Waterproofing Wax for Leather, it helped fill in and smooth out some of the scuffs. I will continue to use this on all my footwear that needs cleaned!

This product works great! It is EASY to use. My shoes and hiking boots look cleaner. The Cleaning Gel applicator is easy to use and safe. I use it to clean my Merrell MOAB WaterProof boots after each hike. I also use it to clean my other shoes. It works great.

I just used this on the La Sportiva boots I purchased two days ago. The material I used it on now has a faded white appearance, leaving an ugly stain next to the normal dark grey leather. I’ve rinsed the boots off a couple of times to no avail. Literally waited years to purchase these boots

Used it for the first time before waterproofing my walking boots after they got soaked on the islands of Scotland. The boots were not dirty. The cleaning gel made them ready for the waterproofing.
With its built in scrubbing brush, this product is great for removing residual dirt, making your boots ready for application of waterproofer, conditioner or polish. N.B. You do have to remove the thick clods of mud with a brush and water, beforehand. Only criticism is that you do have to press quite hard to get the cleaner out of the bottle. Also, it is more of a liquid detergent, rather than a gel as stated by Nikwax.
My waterproof boots were starting to let quite a bit of water through and some research lead me to the Nikwax cleaning gel. Some of the reviews complained about the cleaning pad, but enough positive comments made me give it a shot. I followed all the instructions and the gel did a great job. I did find that I had to squeeze the bottle to get enough gel out, but that was a minor issue. I was very surprised at how clean the gel got my boots. I used the Nikwax waterproofing spray, but haven't hit wet trails since I've cleaned and waterproofed. Let you know how that works out as soon as I do!
I’ve been using nikwax products for years , mostly for soft shells and gore tex clothing .Always great results ,delivered as promised.Nikwax footwear cleaning gel is no different . A very simple application ( follow the instruction ) and my 3 pairs of shoes look "younger" . Tested my salomon X ultra mid winter boots in snow and water on 8 km hike .Excellent product , recommended.
As I read in a couple of reviews, these Nikwax boot products are a bit of hassle to apply. I've been through assorted bottles of the cleaning gel, leather conditioner, and aqueous wax. The little plastic scrubber may be gone entirely before you finish a bottle, but the remaining pad still works to get the stuff on the boots. And you have to co-ordinate squeezing the bottle and applying pressure with the applicator onto the boot to get the stuff to come out.I always use a toothbrush on my boots under a trickle of running water to "pre-clean." Since I tried to re-sole some Italian boots once, and the new soles refused to bond, I've not dared use any products containing oil of any kind on my boots!Nikwax can sometimes be gotten cheaper on Amazon than the similar ... We have used this gel for outdoor shoes/boots for a while, especially our higher end hiking boots. Works great. I recently had to find something to clean a pair of Flylow leather gloves with - this is the first thing recommended. Worked like a charm. We'll be keeping an extra tube of this stuff now that it works well on gloves as well.
Very hesitate to buy it again! The sponge head applicator is the worst design, it's so hard to squeeze the liquid out and also the plastic/sponge breaks before finishing wash the first boots. Why the manufactory use such a week sponge material??I have to remove the broken sponge applicator and pull the cleaning gel onto my boots directly, then use my teeth brush to clean the boots. This production need a renovation for the applicator design. Actually all Nikwax products with a sponge applicator are sucks!
