A miscalculation for the series.

Contra is about fast and ferocious running and gunning, and you shouldn't have to pause so your gun can cool down while you're being swarmed by enemies, especially when your secondary weapon overheats just as quickly. There are a number of character and weapon mods that can be purchased which will presumably lessen the pain of this misguided creative decision, but the modding system is almost impenetrably incomprehensible. At its very core, Rogue Corps can offer some brief bursts of action enjoyment. But it doesn't take long before you find yourself just wanting to play something else. A disappointing misstep for an iconic action series. At least it wasn't released for the standard full MSRP of most new games.

I grew up playing Contra, but I'm no pro at it. In fact, I've never beat a Contra game --not even with the Konami code. This game goes in a very different direction than those side scrolling chaotic shooters of the past three decades. But the chaos and over-the-top action is all still here. If you hold this to the previous games and expect more of the same, than you may not enjoy this. This is a very different type of game. For one, it's a twin stick shooter with lots of RPG elements. It's still in the same universe of the Contra series, despite it feeling much more wacky. This is a pretty fun game though. If you are unfamiliar with the Contra series, you have nothing to lose trying this one out, but know that it's very different than the other games in the series. ... MoreI grew up playing Contra, but I'm no pro at it. It has explosions, which is about the best I can say about it, this game is a grind fest, you need to replay levels to grind for weapons, power them up, then they overheat, even though one of the producers is a Contra vet, I had flashbacks to the awful Contra Legacy of War on PS1/SS.I enjoyed C: The Contra Adventure at least that had some redeeming qualities to it. But this game, no. If I wasn't a diehard fan and this wasn't $15, this wouldn't be in my collection, period. Not recommended at all.

Doesn’t deserve all the negative!

Yes this game does have inferior graphics regardless of what platform and somewhat resembles a mobil game. And no it is not a side scrolling run and gun like we all know and love of the Contra franchise. But all of that aside, the cut scenes and story is unique with continuity to Alien Wars, the characters are interesting and the gameplay is actually fun. I will admit the platforming in the game is a little problematic at times but not broken. If you see and play the game for what it is without preconceived visions of what this Contra game SHOULD be in your minds and keep an open mind I think this is a great video game. Give it a try if it goes on sale below the retail price of $39.99 Or better yet download the demo on your respective platforms and try it out first ... MoreYes this game does have inferior graphics regardless of what platform and somewhat resembles a mobil game. Not bad. Not Great, but not bad.
31 January 2020

I was super excited to hear about a new Contra game on the Nintendo platform. Then I saw it and it looked like a toasted chocolate nugget on a roaster. It still looks like that. However I had to give it a chance since I grew up with Contra and Super C. The gameplay is actually not bad. It is a repetitive grinder but it's enough to keep you at least somewhat interested. The graphics I give an absolute Fail but the gameplay I'll give it a pass. I picked it up for 14.99 from best buy. For that price I'm ok with what I got. If i paid full price for this chocolate nugget looking adventure I wouldve been very displeased, but for 15 bucks...I'm ok with it.

Not old school Contra but still fun
5 May 2021

This is definitely not like the old school Contra where it is a run 'n gun platformer. It is definitely a different style being a 3rd person shooter. However, it is still fun despite it being cheesy. And as the M rating shows, it definitely is not for the kiddos since it does contain some swearing.Would say it is a fun way to kill some time, especially with some friends.

Not the Contra you know but still Good!
6 January 2020

I wasn’t going in with high expectations for this “Contra” game since it was announced. The gameplay and graphics didn’t speak to me especially for the Contra Franchise. I purchased this game a few months ago and finally got to playing it. It’s not bad ... yea the graphics look like a PS2 games but the controls are good and it has a rpg element that keeps you playing. I can see why the price tag is 39.99 because there is replayability but still doesn’t justify the cash grab. Get this on sale and if you like twin stick shooters .... it’s a good catch. I’m happy with it. There is swearing in the cut scene so beware for young children playing.

Not too bad, but could be better
5 October 2019

As an old school Contra fan, I was excited to hear that a reboot was coming. However after playing the game, I wondered why it took so long. First off the frame rate seems to be off, when there is heavy action onscreen there appears to be slow down and clipping on the characters. Second the upgrade system is a bit confusing, although I've just gotten to where I can expand on some skills, but there's so many options it's easy to get lost. Other than that I love the gameplay, simple run and gun that can be played couch coop or online. Can't speak to the online portion as I've yet to try. But about 3 levels in and I can say I'm having fun with this one.

The swan song of a once good publisher
11 January 2020

I went into this purchase with no expectations, which is why I gave it 3 stars as opposed to none. In fact I waited for it to go on sale because I knew it probably wouldn’t be all that great. What I ended playing was a version of the Dreamcast game Cannon Spike (just not as good looking). The gameplay is similar to driving a 60’s model Buik, just not as smooth. I think the only thing that kept me playing was the outrageous premise and characters. This game really shows that Konami as a publisher is not as interested in console gaming as it once was. It’s been years since any new Contra game was released, and this game shows why. Was it complete crap? No. Would I recommend to new Switch owners? No. Instead buy the Contra collection available on the E shop, you’ll ... MoreI went into this purchase with no expectations, which is why I gave it 3 stars as opposed to none. a fun game

this game is getting a lot of hate online from contra fans. i been playing contra since the original so i like to think i'm more than qualified to judge contra games. first lets get one thing out of the way, the graphics. this has been the main point of contention among fans of contra. yes, the graphics kinda suck. this game looks like an early ps2 game. Neo Contra looks a lot better than this game. if you're going to pass on this game based on poor graphics alone, you're doing yourself and this franchise a disservice. if you can get pass the "bad" graphics, which imo isn't THAT bad, the game is very fun to play. after all, contra is all about the gameplay, not how pretty it looks. i been playing this game for hours and i have been enjoying it so far. the only thing ... Morethis game is getting a lot of hate online from contra fans. i been playing contra since the original so i like to think i'm more than qualified to judge contra games. first lets get one thing out of the way, the graphics. this has been the main point of contention among fans of contra. yes, the graphics kinda suck. this game looks like an early ps2 game.
