A fighting game with Pokemon characters

This is probably the only Pokemon game that I can get into these days. The rest are turn-based which is still the original formula. There is nothing wrong with turn-based games but I want the option to actual avoid my opponent's attacks. This game combines a 3-D fighting game with Pokemon characters. It is the complete edition from the Wii U version and much more content. I just wished that the game is still continually getting new updates such as characters, and arenas. I got the physical copy because it was much cheaper than the digital version still on the Nintendo Shop.

Expected more from Pokemon

This game is overall just okay. I looked forward to getting it since it pits many of the most popular pokemon against each other in a traditional fighting game sense (not a turn based rpg battle). It’s cool to try each character and unleash their special moves. But the fun runs out fast after that. The league mode is the closest to a story mode but gets really grindy. Since you are building up one pokemon to keep moving up the ranks it doesn’t incentivize you to try other pokemon. I also don’t know why they felt the need to make two different perspectives during the battles. It’s jarring and serves no real purpose. I think this game is best fit for families with two or more kids who might get more hours of enjoyment from battling each other.

For Pokemon fans who also like fighting games

Pokken Tournament is a great game if you like Pokemon, like fighting games, and can't wait for Smash Ultimate to come out in December.The roster is full of unique Pokemon from all generations, appealing to fans old and new. The gameplay is interesting and different from other games in that it combines multiple play styles. The mid-fight switching from 2d to 3d movement is a clever twist on the fighting game formula.However some of the battles feel repetitive after a while. As a casual player, the controls were a bit hard to get used to for me.Overall, if you're a diehard Pokemon fan, add this game to your collection.This game will hold me over until Smash comes out next month.

Fun new approach to fighting games

The concept of this game was weird to me at first until I played the demo several times. If you love Pokemon and you want to see them actually fight, this is the game for you. It's not your traditional fighting game with combo inputs. There are two phases that you switch between that change the way you approach the battle and the way that you fight. This makes the fighting interesting.The controls are easy to learn and the tutorials are helpful in teaching you how to play. The player base for the game is very small so if you want to play this with other people, I suggest trying the demo out first with a friend and see how you both like it. Otherwise, I recommend this game!

Great VS. Game

From character customization to the Pokemon you choose to play, this game is detailed in all the right ways. The graphics are crisp and beautiful, the music is a beat between casual and intense, and unlike most fighting games, the gameplay isn't overly complicated. You come to master combos in a few days, and the transition between open-field battle and classic 1-one-1 side fighting always keeps you on your toes. The selection of Pokemon you can play is even better. Every DLC you originally had to purchase on the Wii U version comes included, and you can jump right in with your favorite Pokemon the moment you begin. The ability to play it handheld makes it most redeeming of all. Good game. Highly recommend it.

I bought Pokken Tournament for the Switch to play with my 6 and 4 year old boys since we recently finished playing through Sun and Moon. Fighting other people really makes the game a challenge and fun, except against button mashers. My kids will build up their supers pressing the buttons wildly and then destroy opponents, which gets old quick playing against them... I'm not much of a fighting game guy and I'm sure I just haven't figured out the correct characters with the counter moves for such strategies, but trouncing the little ones makes them quit as much as getting beaten by them makes me bored...Bottom line: We've had a lot of fun playing since we bought it but are back to Zelda's DLC after 2 weeks of evenings unlocking and leveling Pokemon fighters. Your mileage will vary!

Really well done Pokemon fighting game

Not too much of a learning curve, especially compared to most fighting games. No quarter-circles or Shoryuken inputs, just buttons and single directions to perform moves. The Phase system is new and might be confusing at first but feels pretty natural after a little while. Good amount of content. All the fighters are unique and REALLY well adapted. I'm not disappointed in how any of them were handled. Definitely recommended.Split screen is terrible by the way, I'd say that's the only significant flaw. It's ridiculously choppy and hard to see, I'm honestly not even sure why it's included.This is fine though because you can still do single-screen play, one player has to be the "background" player but it's not hard to get used to.Besides that, this game is fantastic!
