Awesome All-in-One for local and streaming media

So far, all are working well.Setup options allow for system flexibility in terms of audio channels and video display. The main menu is also easy to personalize. I have paired a Bluetooth keyboard for text entry in search fields and there are some games which work with it.My only difficulty is not with the Shield, itself, but wading through the sea of streaming apps, to see what is really usable. There are many free ones, but the activation requires an account on the web site of the publisher, which cannot be done through the Shield, apparently by design of the publishers. I have not yet tried the pay services, other then Netflix and CrunchyRoll which predate my purchase of the Shield. What I have installed, so far, easily fits into the smaller memory of this model Shield, but I added a 32G MicroSD, just as I did on my old Android phone, and made it primary storage for everything.

This this a good alternative to Alexa and Roku streaming devices. It is easy to setup out of the box but a little cumbersome for the beginner tech guy to configure as far as controlling your TV and audio sound bars. It has all the apps you will need thru the Google Play store to watch all your favorite streaming services as well as some games. You have the option of setting up an optional gaming controller and other Bluetooth controllers. Still trying to figure out how to connect it to my Google Home so I can automate through voice commands. I did not experience any lag or drops while streaming on any apps which I did get with other devices.

Great hardware hobbled by Android TV software
1 April 2018

I have it on good authority that the NVIDIA hardware is very powerful. It was fast enough for normal use, including many games. However, Android and the overall UI here is confusing and hard to use. I encountered plenty of bugs too, like the setting to turn on the network file server that taunts you by disappearing until you google it and find out you have to first turn on the Plex server (that you don't want) and then reboot while doing a headstand. For that matter, we couldn't make it through more than about thirty seconds of TV in Plex without the Plex app crashing too. The remote is actually pretty bad: needs real volume buttons, dedicated play/pause, and bring back the headphone jack from the older model. The remote is actually pretty bad: needs real volume buttons, dedicated play/pause, and bring back the headphone jack from the older model. Volume control with this device is mysterious and ultimately broken. You can plug a keyboard inbut oh wait, I can't use it to enter passwords randomly in some apps (Amazon, looking at you). Finally, the Android TV smart phone app for iOS pales in comparison to the Roku apps in basically every way. You can say "oh that's Plex's fault" or "oh that's Amazon's fault" and on and on. OK, sure, maybe they're the ones responsible for their apps. But ultimately, if everything you want to run is buggy, no matter whose fault it is, why would you buy a box where all the apps are buggy? If NVIDIA wants to sell these things, these issues need to become NVIDIA's (and/or Google's) problems at some point. I doubt you want this product. Buy something else: a Roku, a Raspberry Pi, a little NAS you can put Plex on, a gaming PC. Maybe no one of those will do everything this box can, but the Shield TV ends up being so frustrating that you won't want to use it for anything. Sorry I can't write more now, I have to go box up the Shield TV and it just started Google Play Music at full volume for no apparent reason.

I like it better than my Roku
27 May 2020

Compared to a Roku Ultra I'd been using, the Shield TV has been much more reliable at waking up my AV equipment (a Samsung TV and a Yamaha receiver) and controlling audio volume using HDMI-CEC. The Roku would periodically lose its ability to control things over CEC, requiring a reboot about once a day to fix the issue; the Shield TV has been rock solid by comparison. The AI upscaling actually works quite well and is not just a gimmick, though it seems to over-enhance skin and other textures in some circumstances.Streaming games from my GeForce-equipped PC while using an Xbox controller works basically flawlessly, though I should note that both my Shield TV and PC are connected over Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi.Compared to the Roku, there are some downsides worth ... MoreCompared to a Roku Ultra I'd been using, the Shield TV has been much more reliable at waking up my AV equipment (a Samsung TV and a Yamaha receiver) and controlling audio volume using HDMI-CEC. Roku's approach of adding a headphone jack to the remote is a little more physically awkward, but provides a more reliable listening experience.- Volume control (either IR or CEC) is weirdly slow. But overall, this is currently my go-to streaming device, and I'll probably sell the Roku. As an added bonus, the remote beeps out NVIDIA in Morse Code when you use the find my remote feature :)

Item powers on, but that's about it.
3 October 2024

I have 2 other Nvidia shields, which are fantastic. However, this Item hasn't been used at all previously, which usually would normally be a good thing. However, the old Shield OS does not connect to Google, making it impossible to use. The item came free of any scuffs or marks. It is a perfectly good paper weight.

Newer is not necessarily better

I've been known to go for an older model on some items, and this was just such a case. My TVs are 1080P; I'm quite satisfied with them until such time as they eventually fail and would need to be replaced. I don't have 4K service here.so the 4K support features of allied devices are superfluous and irrelevant. Also had no interest in Alexa (which could be listening in on all sorts of things) etc., so those later features are not needed or wanted here. In regard to these Nvidia Shield models, I preferred having the micro-SD card slot to the dual USB ports. So, this earlier model happened to be the right fit for me. If you are buying to play back local content only, you will still need to have and use a Google account.Setting up KODI for local playback was a real pain but once done, or you already know how, then it's either a one off issue or not one at all.The only real issue at present for those using the device to play back local media is that the Shield does not properly support 25fps / 30fps playback. It plays at 50/60 and does NOT pulldown correctly resulting in skipping when viewing this type of content. There are a couple of setting s in KODI advanced setup for this but it doesn't work perfectly unlike on a device that can handle it.

Very Buggy OS And Many Apps Not Won't Work

The ProtonVPN , Disney+, CNN, CBC, CTV, Global apps as well as others would not work at all and crashed repeatedly. I contacted Nvidia tech support several times but they were unable to resolve any of the issues and made vague promises of future Android OS updates to address bugs.Due to these problems it was almost useless for my needs and I finally gave up and replaced it with an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, which has worked effortlessly from the start with all my apps, produces better video quality and functions very well with the TV and home theatre. The Nvidia Shield was and expensive waste of money and I can't recommend it. After fighting with it for 2 months I was unable to return it as it was past 30 days and not technically a hardware defect.

Works As Intended
6 November 2023

Got this device to replace a Roku 4K that claimed it had surround sound capabilities but I couldn’t get it to work. It kept outputting audio to stereo instead of the 5.1 track. Thankfully this does what I want and outputs the 5.1 track and even has Dolby atmos so I couldn’t ask for anything else. It’s a learning curve tho learning a new device but I really think the triangular remote that comes with this is much more comfortable to me than traditional remotes.
