You don't need high temp silicone on the firebox, letting in more air isn't a bad thing. However the gasket on the lid area is a good idea (assuming its not bent like mine)I'd cautiously recommend the unit, if you're unable to get a higher quality brand. It's a definitely "you get what you pay for" offset.

It took him a while to get the smoking down being reverse smoke but since then it's been a great grill. I think all the bad reviews on this grill are because they don't know how to operate a good smoker or don't know how to smoke at all. It is a science and takes patience and learning in my opinion it's not for everybody. Oklahoma joe is just a good product no matter how you look at it.

Did alot of research before settling on an Oklahoma Joes longhorn offset reverse flow. I wanted to make sure I was able to get the kind of smoker that would achieve the kinda of flavors I remember as a kid and so far this thing has not failed to impress. I have no issues with the smoker at all. I read some of the other reviews and there were some complaints about how this thing was made and I didn’t run into any of that. Further I welded and fabricated for years so if there was an issue I was just gonna sort it out but this was a well made smoker, and the only thing I’ve done was tightening the nut in the vent down in the firebox to make it snug enough to stay in the open position. Not a big deal. Yes the paint did chip off the top of the firebox and the bottom ... MoreDid alot of research before settling on an Oklahoma Joes longhorn offset reverse flow. Either keep it oiled (like you should) or get a rattle can of high temp paint and sand the area smooth and go back over it. Either way not a big deal. I would say keeping it covered and oiled should seriously prolong the life of your grill. Just my 2 cents. So thanks Oklahoma joes……great product and I’ll definitively be making more purchases with you in the future.

Heavy!! Make sure you have help for assembly.
7 August 2023

Cooking is work! Regardless of what enjoyment we find in it, it’s hot. The grill is a quality product that is seemingly durable. Have used it thus far to cook a whole Chicken, a Pork Butt, and 8 Lbs of Baby Back Ribs. It’s large cooking area requires a bit more charcoal than I thought, but keeping the heat at 325 with proper ventilation seems to like the fuel. The fire box makes additional charcoal really easy and placement of wood for smoke simple as well. The food has turned out great and as I’m a beginner I’m sure there are things to be learned. Button line is I like it and believe it’s going to last a long time.

I Made a Mistake

Like many others, I did my homework and wanted to find the 'best-bang-for-the-buck' smoker to get into the hobby. Landed on the OKJ's Langhorn reverse flow. Dumped another $300 into mods, thinking it would help, and to some extent it did (sealing the firebox, getting an upgraded baffle and grates from a 3rd party company, installing additional temp gauges, etc.) because out of the box, this thing is pretty disappointing.Long story short, this is an absolute bear to manage temps. The wood consumption required to get this thing to hold 250 in the cooking chamber was not something I was prepared for. Can you do it? Yes - but you need a ton of wood at exactly the right moisture content. It is NOT forgiving. I feel like I messed up big-time and should have just spent the money upfront for a quality smoker. Lesson learned and hope this helps others who are contemplating the same decisions I was before I purchased this unit.

Longhorn reverse flow smoker/grill

I have had an Oklahoma Joe Highland grill for 5 years. Loved it as a grill and found i could offset smoke as long as I babysat the meat. I have a summer place and wanted the same grill but could only find the longhorn reverse flow. For 2 years I only grilled with the stack in conventional set up not knowing anything about reverse flow. One day I decided to change the stack and install the plates (5 minutes) and try smoking. Oh my, was that a difference. I use a remote probe set and I was impressed how consistent the temp was. I know people talk about leaky seals and such but as a novice I didn't notice that and ended up with great briskets and pork butts. I just bought my second longhorn reverse flow on black friday since my old highland can't do reverse flow.....and you know what? I am keeping them both so I can grill or smoke without reconfiguring. I am very pleased with the Oklahoma Joe offset grill/smokers. If I have one disappointment it is that the latest smoker cover is flimsier than the older ones. Charge me $10 more and let me have the heavy duty one.

You are better off using a garbage can, at least it's way cheaper, and it wouldn't leak nearly as much. I paid over 600 for my OJ smoker and, Lowes set it up. It doesn't have a single matching gap, overlapping doors, paint literally bubbled off the smoker box. I could've just used a hibachi and a foil pouch of wood chips and saved a ton of money and frustration. Very disappointed with this purchase, and on a side note Lowes customer service is an oxymoron at best. Useless and not very personable. Don't waste your money.

I assembled it by myself in 95 degree Florida summer heat. That was fun! It had some leaks during the first burn but they all sealed up in time. I continually season areas where paint has burned away with spray canola oil. It’s resulted in a rust-free surface. Simply put: the Longhorn Reverse Flow absolutely rocks!

The Longhorn smoker leaks smoke like a sieve. I purchased gasket sealers for the main compartment and firebox. both lids still have major leaks. added two after market clamps to the main compartment, still leaks. i have ordered extra clamps for both firebox and the main compartment. hopefully this will correct that. The firebox half, I sealed with a half tube of high temp sealer. On the burn in, it is recommended for a temp of 250-300 degrees. Well, the paint on the firebox was bubbling up and burning off.I have had this for just over a week. the firebox now droops down on the right side. the heat seems to weaken the metal on the right side of the main compartment where the firebox is attached. I bought an automotive jack stand to hold it up. Also you will need to seal the exhaust pipe and cap for leaks. You would think for the amount of money these cost, the tolerances would be much better. how hard should it be to match a lid to the smoker and have it fit? The temperature across the cooking surface was not as even as Oklahoma Joe's claims. So I purchased an after market solid steel baffIe. This helpedwith two things, one, it helped keep the temperature even and 2, I had to remove the inside mount for the factory baffle plate and drill holes in the new baffle and use the top 2 bolts for the firebox, but what it did was help the firebox from drooping by reenforcingthe main compartment. I very tired of sending thing back so I just decided to make this work. But by the time you spend Time and the money you need to to make this smoker preform correctly, you would be better off just buying a higher quality one to begin with. I could have had a 1/4" thick steel smoker that was all welded and ready to go for the same amount I have spent on this Oklahoma Joe's reverse longhorn smoker, this is half the thickness.Bottom line, this smoker is not ready to go out of the box. you need to spend time and money to make it work correctly.

Worse than I expected

So I knew I would have to do some mods to seal the leaks and gaps but it was more than I expected. Impossible to control temp, I had to use high temp sealant as well as high-temp felt and pretty much got most of it sealed. Any smoker is going to leak and this is not a $3K smoker but $799 is a fair amount of money to not be able to control the temp.I called customer service on this and told him which smoker this was and he said I should use OKJ pellets? What? I had to tell him several times that this was an offset smoker. He also said many users use the high temp felt and I said he should send me some and he said he can send me a link at my expense???Look at attached pics, first is tons of smoke coming out of the left side of the chamber where there is at least ... MoreSo I knew I would have to do some mods to seal the leaks and gaps but it was more than I expected.
