Awful Traditional Refried Beans

We bought Refried Beans to use as a layer on our Nachos. It’s usually thick and has lots of beans. This can was a watery, sloppy mess. I stirred up from the bottom but it made no difference. It was a loose paste with very few beans. I looked online and noticed that El Paso brand had a recall for this product in October 2022 for possible botulism and was concerned we had just eaten contaminated beans. Then I went to the website and noticed many customers complaining about watery new recipe refried beans, so I’m assuming that was the problem. We won’t be buying El Paso Brand again and we have used them for years.

So I did the same thing - only bought Old El Paso – we loved the flavor and texture. I did try others on sale but always bought Old El Paso as a rule - even when regularly priced and I don't do that. I thought I accidentally bought a new Low Sodium blend but no, it was the Traditional. I loved all of their refried beans (except black refried, they were too salty even though I love black beans) and now I won't use any of them because they are so bland I have to add tons of seasoning/spices to give them flavor - not to mention salt. It would be one thing if they wanted to lower the salt content but they didn't. The sodium is still high and maybe higher while at the same time tasting like they are salt free - and I don't like salty foods. I NEVER add salt to burritos but had to with the new recipe and then we were so thirsty all night from too much sodium.I see their responses - example :"This formula change was made in direct response to consumer feedback regarding the dissatisfaction of the color, flavor, and texture on the previous product. The new recipe has a more rounded, savory refried bean flavor; that allows the bean flavor to really come through."I don't know who those consumers were, but the texture was the same or better as any other brand of refried beans, including homemade. The color was natural looking and the flavor definitely let the beans shine. Now they are so bland. I have been in some Mexican restaurants who serve very bland refried beans and maybe that's more legit for Mexican culture, but I've been buying this brand for the flavor and consistency for decades because I like it. Why change the entire line and alienate loyal customers?I literally bought and used at least 30 cans a year and stopped buying them as soon as the change went through. Fortunately our stores carry another brand we now love that tastes like OEP used to. A brand we never heard of or looked at until OEP changed.Bring out a new recipe to stand with your originals - don't lose all of your faithful customers.

Dish Soap

I'm writing this review just to try and hammer the nail in that your company clearly doesn't understand from the hundreds of other reviews. Remove these from stores now. Recall them. There is a chemical in these refried beans that is clearly not in the ingredients list. I smelled the beans then smelled my dish soap.. yup, same smell. I'm pretty sure dish soap doesn't classify as "natural flavors." I buy refried beans for tacos on occasion and I keep accidently buying these dish soap tasting beans because they are the most expensive (assuming most expensive means better/higher quality.) I've now wasted money on 4 cans of these.Could be many things.. Either way, my trust with your products is a thing of the past. Fix it or not, I will buy another brand from here on. Your zesty ranch sauce is disgusting too btw. It's in the trash next to the soap beans.

These are honestly the best with some nachos. I would definitely recommend this product because it’s good on nachos. Also, it’s very good on nachos. And what most people don’t know, is it’s good with nachos. I give it only 3 stars if the nachos with this product are cold. I honestly don’t care about this product. I just want my fetch points and it had to be 25 characters long. Don’t go drugs kids. Jesus saves.

New Recipe Tastes Horrible
3 January 2022

Old El Paso was my go-to brand for traditional refried beans. Now since they changed their formula, they have a weak and runny texture and taste terrible. They taste like severely watered-down beans and perhaps cardboard. I don't understand how your company took a superior brand and made it into a bad tasting generic refried beans product on purpose. I'm curious to know the real story - this could not have been done due to customer requests as stated. We noticed a change several cans ago but thought the inferior taste was because of a bad bean season or something, so we gave it another chance to see if that got straightened out. Rotten poop smelling refried beans
28 October 2022

I just bought 2 cans of old el paso refried beans for toastadas tonight and wow. The whole family about gaged. They smell like poop. The expiration date is Aug2024 so why are they rotten? Did they grind up a rat carcass or something or are their employees actually sh#$ing in the beans??? Apparently there is no quality control of their product despite whatever claims they make. I'll NEVER buy this brand ever again.

The change of recipe failed!

My family has been buying Old El Paso ingredients for taco night for nearly 40 years. I realize things change and I have noticed that change over the years. But never has it been so drastic, aka bad, as it is now!I purchased 6 cans of Traditional Refried Beans and didn't notice the new stamp on the label boasting "Made with Real Spices". It wasn't until I opened the can and noticed the smell was definitely different, then heated it up and ate it on my burrito, that I realized something was WAY off! It tasted like literal poop! At that point, I looked at the can and noticed the new stamp on the label. That's when I realized "great! they've changed it again!" Fortunately, I still had older cans in my pantry to compare it to and sure enough it is different! The new ... MoreMy family has been buying Old El Paso ingredients for taco night for nearly 40 years. Fortunately, I still had older cans in my pantry to compare it to and sure enough it is different! The new labeled beans have 20 more calories than before, 1g more of fat, and it went from 0g sat. fat to now .5g sat fat! 10mg more sodium, and 3g LESS dietary fiber! The only positive difference is you get 1g more of protein. You also get less iron and the potassium went from 750mg down to 290mg!When you go over to ingredients, one thing I know is that the first 3-5 ingredients are going to be the main ingredients in foods. On both cans, Cooked Pinto Beans and water are the first 2 ingredients, however, the old can then went on with salt, tomato paste, sea salt... the new can lists LARD as the next ingredient! Not once but TWICE!Old El Paso- not sure what you have going on in your kitchens, but this tasted awful and left me with an upset stomach! I don't typically write reviews, but I felt that since you are now losing a lifelong customer, you should know why. Today, I will be returning the 5 remaining cans that I recently purchased back to the store for a refund.I'm aware that this one customer may not make the difference to your bottom line, but I hope that in getting this review you take into consideration that cutbacks should not come at the cost of the quality of your products.

They probably only like plain beans with no flavor which they should get a different brand if GOOD flavor was a problem to them. I’m so disappointed I have to get Walmart’s great value brand because it tastes better than the new recipe.

Watered Down
8 December 2022

I've been using old El Paso products forever but the last few times I bought the refried beans, they have been disgusting. When you 1st open the can there's like an inch of water on top. I drain the water out and then fry them in a pan and add onion. No matter how long I cook them they stay super runny. The addition of onion doesnt help the flavor as it normally would. I figured if I'd add a small amount of enchilada sauce it may and give it some flavor, but no luck and it didnt help the consistency. I won't buy these again. If i could give zero stars I would. I still have 4 cans, and I'll be donating them. Goya brand it is.
