The Opinel No.8 is a classic. It's fantastic at what it does. It is small and very light in your pocket. The blade locks really solidly. The blade is very thin so this knife is an amazing slicer when sharpened. At this price its not super precious, so if it disappears for some reason, oh well, not the end of the world, buy another one. Therefore quite good on work sites etc.Being so thin bladed, it is not a strong carving or chopping blade. It is a slicer. Ideal for taking camping as folding cutlery. The knife is easily customised. Wooden handle is easily carved or oiled/stained. The carbon steel blade takes forced patinas wonderfully, it is easy to etch a design onto the blade if you feel creative. Or not. Suit yourself.

I have one of these and it's a great knife. But that's not my problem. I see in the ad that someone has described this knife as "assisted opening". I am certain this is not an assisted opening knife since it has a thumbnail nick on the blade. I've never seen a thumbnail nick on an assisted opening knife and I've seen a lot of them. Just FYI.

A dam fine knife for camping.

If you gave never used an Opinel knife before let me point out a few things you might not know... 1: They come shaving sharp more often than not, be careful the first time you open it up. 2: The hinges can be tight at first but these wear in pretty soon, be careful the first time you upon it up. 3: The blades are probably covered in some kind of oil so don't use it for food prep until you have cleaned it properly, also the oil can make the blade slippy to grip, be careful when you open it up. 4: The stainless ones are harder to keep sharp but easier to keep clean, the Carbo ones hold a wicked edge for ages but rust easy. 5: Did I mention that you should be careful when you open it up? Great knife for camping, just don't rely on it for survival as the folding blade ... MoreIf you gave never used an Opinel knife before let me point out a few things you might not know... I so far have one of each Opinel Carbine knives except the no.2 & no.13 but I'm working on fixing that issue, if you can afford it get the 10 piece set, it'll save you money in the long run and it looks great too.

Doesn’t cut it

Prefer an higonokami for the price range. Here the bulky handle doesn’t sit well for a pocket knife. Locking mecanism flimsy. Pretty dull OOTB - easy fix but didn’t even went into it since it was an immediate turnoff anyhow. Sits on a shelf somewhere until I’ll sharpen it and give it to someone.

Fantastic Knife

Carbon steel blade stays sharp so much longer than stainless steel and just gets sharper overall. Great for in home use as a paring knife. I love it and it reminds me of France every time I use it. The blade turns black if left untreated but I believe there are ways to keep it shiny. It's mu favourite knife and I like that I can fold it too for travel though I am always worried I will lose it. This is a great knife and the No. 8 is perfect size.

Good quality, good value, decent blade, fishing knife that floats
29 December 2018

I am glad to have found this maker and this knife. It's fairly well made, a super value at this price range I feel, it came pretty sharp - but not razor sharp, and has a locking collar for very safe pocket or tackle box storage. The collar has some rough edges, but nothing I can't live with, probably won't do any harm. After purchasing one, the #7, which I think is an ideal size, suitable for everyday use and won't break anyone's bank. It has no clip however. I've since bought several to give as gifts to family. Handles come in various woods, colors, monogrammed, images, lots of custom options to suit everybody. It's a good product, and I'll buy more.

Great handy knife
16 December 2021

Great quality knife! It's compact sized, easy to carry and comes handy whenever needed. Can't wait to see it shine at the camping next summer. One thing I am worried is that I hear people saying the blade is made in carbon, thus may get rusty especially it gets water, time will tell! So far, it is a very satisfying small knife.

Love it or Meh?

I've been wanting an Opinel forever just never got around to it. This knife is amazingly sharp with the quality carbon blade and i do admire the simplicity of the lightweight wooden handle. It's as simple as they get. Unfortunately, that simplified design causes the wood to swell and contract with fluctuations in temperature, more to the point dewpoint and humidity. This can make opening and closing the knife a PIA. Also, as these French blades, even though cheaply priced are sorely sought after, it would have been awesome to see an option for a case or some sheath holder to protect the knife and wooden handle when not in use. Overall I expected more from the Company who has been bumping out blades for over 100 years.Oh the other knife was so insignificantly tiny ... MoreI've been wanting an Opinel forever just never got around to it. IT reminded me of one of those little derringer screwdrivers that comes with the hardware set on a piece of new furniture. Like it was made for the people of Lilliput. SO i just gave that to my father who uses it on his 1800s ship modeling project.

This Opinel size 10 knife is the perfect all-round knife. Good quality blade that keeps a good edge. Great quality. I also own a number 6 for smaller jobs.

Opinel Lock Knives
28 March 2022

Brilliant pocket knife. Simple, solid mechanism, nice wood handle that's well shaped and well finished. Dropped a star because the edge was a bit rolled. Didn't take long to get perfect with emery paper, now it has a really sharp edge that lasts well. I think the edge is slightly convex rather than 100% flat and better for it. I've been making shims tricky bits of shuttering to repair a roof. Therese were only from pine wood but very seasoned and it slices through without much effort. Can't open one-handed, but very easy to close and lock one handed - handy working at height and holding on with other hand.
