Order of Time The by Carlo Rovelli

What does it mean for time to "flow"? In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike. For most readers this is unfamiliar terrain. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where at the most fundamental level time disappears. He explains how the theory of quantum gravity attempts to understand and give meaning to the resulting extreme landscape of this timeless world. Weaving together ideas from philosophy, science and literature, he suggests that our perception of the flow of time depends on our perspective, better understood starting from the structure of our brain and emotions than from the physical universe. Written with poetic vitality, The Order of Time offers a profoundly intelligent, culturally rich, novel appreciation of the mysteries of time.

A huge disappointment. I have over 80 Folio Society books and most of them are very fine and a joy to read. This one is not.The first warning sign is the lack of printer, binder and paper - the first time I have ever seen this on a Folio Society book. We are simply told that the paper is from FSC and PEFC mills. Where? China? What is there to hide? Then the book itself: the margin at the spine is so narrow the book doesn't open properly and it needs two hands to hold it very firmly to read it. Don't try it with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. This cost £60.0. It feels like a £30.00 book.Don't buy it even though the contents are brilliant. Buy a paperback instead. It will be a while before I buy another Folio book.

A fascinating discussion of the early days of quantum physics with a lucid exposition of Rovelli's own views of the various interpretations of its implications. In fact the episode on Helgoland is not as prominent as I'd expected.

A good book
27 March 2019

This is a well produced book, well bound and attractive. The contents are not easy to understand but well worth the effort. The second half of the book, which contains more philosophical opinion and less solid scientific fact, is less convincing and sometimes seems rather 'rambling', and rather harder to follow but, again, worth persevering.

Small but deep
9 September 2018

This is a rather small book, but don't let that fool you - this book covers some pretty deep concepts. In fact I'd go so far as to say this probably shouldn't be your first book on the topic - I'd recommend Stephen Hawking's A Brief History Of Time for that.A rather odd writing style - a combination of the scientific, and flowery poetic prose.

So this is what time's all about! Wow!

A fantastic book by a super author. Be prepared for a complex, compelling read that really makes you think and rethink the concept of time: you'll read it more than once!

The Arrow of Time
23 June 2021

Carlo Rovelli seems to get touted as the next Stephen Hawking and his writing is enjoyable, if a bit whimsical and indistinct. However this book does nothing to advance the argument of Eddington's Arrow of Time. He just goes around in a big circle and settles on entropy which is now a very well established perspective.

The joy of physics.
29 October 2018

An avid amateur student of science and physics this is the third book by Carlo Rovelli I have read. He is clearly passionate about the topic and a stellar teacher who can explain details very clearly. Its like a stroll of an afternoon with an enlightened friend. Many thanks to Dr. Rovelli for his clear explanations and vivid imagery in describing the current understanding of physics, always with the caveat of being in a moment of discovery on a journey to understanding the universe.

What does "time" mean?
20 November 2019

How does anyone begin to gain an understanding of the concept of time? If reading "The Order of Time" one needs more than a basic grounding into the world of physics - the chapter "the inadequacy of grammar" left me reeling. After reading Rovellis book I revisited "Einsteins Dreams" by Alan Lightman (for the 4th, or maybe 5th occasion) and only then was calm and equilibrium restored. This is a book I would award ten stars - make time to read it.

short, clear, boring
26 February 2021

It was meant for easy reading, but it is boring and took me a long time to read, little by little. No entertaining anecdotes and limited writing style. However, it's informative, like an abbreviated textbook.
