My dog likes this Orijen Small breed kibble. I like that the first three ingredients are meat (deboned turkey, deboned chicken, and quail), followed by eggs and whiting, mackerel and many kinds of liver, which is very nutritious for dogs in moderation. The text on the bag says something about "raw ingredients". I was somewhat concerned by this, since some vets and Consumer Reports say that raw pet food, while expensive and kinda trendy, is much more likely to be tainted with pathogens and they don't recommend it. So, I called the Champion Petfoods hotline (the number is on the bag and their website) and one of their people got back to me. So, I called the Champion Petfoods hotline (the number is on the bag and their website) and one of their people got back to me. They explained that "raw" in this context means that the ingredients are super-fresh when they arrive at the factory/kitchen, but the kibble is definitely cooked by the time it's in the bag. So, if anyone was confused like me, this is high quality cooked pet food, not raw food! While it does contain some carbs, the crude protein % and the protein to carbohydrate ratio is pretty good. I'm not thrilled that it also contains "natural chicken flavor" and "rosemary extract" as a preservative, but both added flavor and preservatives are common for most kibble. Overall it's a good dog food and I like that it's made in the USA too. Since you have to enlarge the photo in the description to see it, here's the full list of ingredients for the Orijen Small Breed kibble: Deboned turkey, deboned chicken, quail, eggs, whole blue whiting, whole Atlantic mackerel, turkey liver, chicken liver, turkey heart, chicken heart, dehydrated turkey, dehydrated chicken, dehydrated mackerel, dehydrated chicken liver, dehydrated egg, whole red lentils, whole pinto beans, whole green lentils, chicken fat, whole navy beans, whole chickpeas, lentil fiber, pea starch, natural chicken flavor, pollock oil, turkey cartilage, chicken cartilage, freeze-dried chicken liver, New Zealand green mussels, whole cranberries, whole pumpkin, collard greens, carrots, apples, dried kelp, zinc proteinate, salt, mixed tocopherols (preservative), thiamine mononitrate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, chicory, turmeric, sarsaparilla, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries, citric acid (preservative), rosemary extract, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Bifidobacterium animalis fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product.

My 8lb ShihTzu has always been fed Orijen, but when this formula came out, I decided to try it. I found after switching to the Small Breed Formula, the stinky, eye drainage completely stopped, as well as her stinky feet. Neither issue was a big problem, just slightly annoying, but I was pleased that both issues were resolved. Gracie is now 7yrs old, FULL of energy and very healthy. I free-feed and her weight is perfect, and steady, she eats amazingly small amounts. I find that the 4lb bag lasts 7+ weeks. Also the quality of her hair coat has improved since the switch from the original Orijen formula to the Small Breed Formula.

I have a 19breed rescue from Texas who comes from a very long lineage of street-dogs, whose most prevalent breeds are Pitbull, AmStaff, and Rotti. He's two. Then, I have a half husky/half GSD pup who just turned one. I had been feeding them Grain-Free Large Breed since I made the switch from with grain to grain-free food, so about a year and a half ago now. They both love the food, but I thought it was time to take them both off of the Puppy diet, so this was the next best thing. I have an idea that I will rotate Orijen's dry offerings (regional red,six fish, high protein) so they aren't eating the same food all the time. My only fear is that one or both of them won't like it, and it's an expensive risk to take. They very seldomly get table scraps, since my 19breed ... MoreI have a 19breed rescue from Texas who comes from a very long lineage of street-dogs, whose most prevalent breeds are Pitbull, AmStaff, and Rotti. My only fear is that one or both of them won't like it, and it's an expensive risk to take. They very seldomly get table scraps, since my 19breed wonder was showing signs of becoming overweight slightly. I love Orijen for my guys, and my Vet was glad to hear that's what my food of choice was, and I see they recently upped the price which is highly disappointing. Instead of it costing $200/month to feed my guys, it seems like it will be more like $220 now, but I will stick with Orijen while highly recommending it. The reason my guy needs grain-free, is because he was having issues with his an@l glands, and it was painful, stinky, and expensive to maintain his comfort at the Vet's office. Once I switched to grain-free and included a tablespoon of organic pumpkin everyday, the problem miraculously disappeared. Also, I love that Orijen is made here in the U.S, and with U.S grown and raised ingredients. It is a 30min drive to my nearest Petco, and they are the only Pet Store in the area that carries Orijen products. Thank you, Petco, for making this high quality feed available to us in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. It is much appreciated. Also, the staff at the Wilkes-Barre store is dedicated, kind, friendly and incredibly helpful. I will gladly continue to make the 30min drive twice a month to the store. I thought about using the auto ship feature, and may eventually do so in the future.

When we adopted Suzi we were given a bag of brand "S" dog food. She was reluctant to eat it, fled from it, and I gave it away. We tried other dog foods and she'd show some interest at first but we'd wind up having to douse it with hot water and make a gravy so she'd eat it. And she rarely finished a bowl of it. Several top-tier brands. Then I did some reading and tried Orijen. And she loved it. Still loves it. No mixing, coaxing, tricks, or bribery. She knows her feeding schedule and sits in front of the appropriate closet at the designated times. It's pricey so I wait for a coupon. Thanks for the coupons, Petco. Happy/healthy dog.
If youâre stumped about what to feed your dog, then you may want to give this a try. Iâve switched my dogâs food several times for various reasons, but have always come back to this one. I have a large breed dog whoâs prone to dry skin and joint issues. For cost reasons, I began experimenting with cheaper brands. The ingredients werenât as good as Origen, but they were satisfactory IMO. Well, first, his coat changed. It wasnât as shiny and smooth. Then, he developed dandruff. Dry little flakes all over his beautiful black coat. The final straw was the limp. He began limping. A quick trip the vet let me know he had a sprain. Heâs a large dog who likes to play rough. I knew this and yet gambled with his nutrition in order to save a few bucks, and he was the one ... MoreIf youâre stumped about what to feed your dog, then you may want to give this a try. Heâs a large dog who likes to play rough. I knew this and yet gambled with his nutrition in order to save a few bucks, and he was the one suffering because of it. I left the vet feeling horrible, and immediately went to Petco and picked up Orijen. I ordered a leg brace for the sprain, a great Omega-3 supplement, and some bone broth. Needless to say, about a month in, and his coat is back to looking shiny, glossy, and beautiful. After a good grooming, the âdandruffâ has not returned. And his mobility during therapy for his leg has improved 10 fold. This brand is worth every cent. If I need to make a substitution, it will be with the sister brand (Adana) only. Watching him jump, play, and glistening in the sun is worth it. Your best friend deserves the best you can buy, and Orijen is the best.
We switched to Orijen about four days ago and are extremely glad we did! Fortunately, we're able to just leave food in their bowls and they eat when they're hungry. Well the girls (Chihuahuas, an 8yr old and puppy) gobbled it down and begged for seconds. They had zero interest in their old food, which we mixed in w/the Orijen.Per Vet suggestion, the 8yr old has been on Sensitive Stomach food since we got her. I know it's only been four days, but there haven't been any issues. Orijen doesn't smell like other dog foods either. We started with Blue Buffalo, then to Hills Science Diet, now Orijen and Orijen has the best ingredients. Both humans and dogs are very satisfied!
I've had my dog on this food for years now. This past batch was terrible. He has been dealing with new skin issues and GI issues since we have added the new bag. We've lost money taking him to the vet and getting tests for his issues and finding products and medications to keep his diarrhea and skin blotches at bay. The vet is stumped and unhelpful because there has been no differences in his daily life. He's lost weight despite always being the perfect weight and having zero problems maintaining his body composition. He has been on apoquel for allergies but his allergies are not what they usually are they are far worse and in different places. We loved this product and swore by it because we trusted the brand. Orijen has not held it's reputation and I will no longer be a customer of their brand for this specific reason.Even their cat food gave my cats diarrhea at some point. We vouched for food from our local grocery store and they are doing significantly better. I am very disappointed in this product and hope that the harm that it has caused on my animals is short term.
Okay I used to feed my dog ALOT of different things. Diamond, taste of the wild(same company as diamond)Wellness, and others. My standard poodle disliked it. NOT COOL. The problem with MARS buying out a fantastic company (champion food) is they only care about shareholders so they do things to make more profit. Including worse ingredients and reducing the amount of food you get AND upping the price.Thatâs my little gripe about champion foods. We are starting to see an ever slight downhill trend, we shall see in a couple years how the ingredients change and price. With all that being said I still think this is the best product you can get on the market(in this price range) and is still superior to other kibbles. If I could afford it I would be buying carna4 but not the price for me.For those looking to try orijen I say give it a go. Watch the YouTube video on how orijen makes the food. Itâs amazing. And itâs probably why my dog actually eats the food.
