The Ortofon OM5E to my ears sounds every bit as good as the Goldring 1000 it replaces in my turnrable set-up; I have a Garrard 401 with some "ancient" studio tone arm, a Luxman L-120A integrated amplifier. The sound of the OM5E is nicely rounded, not harsh, very balanced through the audio spectrum I can hear. My upper limit is about 13000 Hz. Good stereo separation. A very rich bass. I'm using 2 gr. of needle weight (measured). All in all a pick-up to be recommended. One would have to fork out a lot more for a noticeably better one.

I’ve had this about a month after deciding to resurrect my project debut from the ‘90s. On a budget and with advice from the Edinburgh shop - the turntable came from Richmond Surrey back in ‘99! - this has really sharpened up the sound. I downloaded the manual for the turntable and with the instructions on the cartridge fitted it and set it up quite happily in 20 mins

I used this cartridge and stylus to upgrade my Technics SL-2000. The cartridge attached to my original headshell with no problem and i only needed a very slight adjustment to line up properly. The sound difference between this and the Shure M91 that I replaced is night and day. There is slight low end distortion at high volumes, but that may honestly be my speakers. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade an older entry-level to mid-grade t.t.

I was upgrading from a very introductory or low quality cartridge and while I could tell that there were improvements with things like inner groove distortion, the sound of this cartridge is not for me. In my setup, I tried two different phono stages with this cartridge. With the one, I was experiencing a lot of sibilance distortion and sometimes just high mid distortion. I moved to a different phono stage, the one in my vintage amp, and the distortion in the high mid frequencies went away. Once the distortion wasn't an issue, it became very hard to control the bass frequencies. Instead of feeling solid and anchoring the sound, they were overwhelming and harsh. The emphasis seams to be not on really low end but on mid bass (100-125hz). The Ortofon OM5e is a great cartridge. Because of the reasonable price, many people assume it is an entry level cartridge but in truth it is a cartridge that continues to satisfy for many years in many different tables. It has a well rounded sound with nothing bad that stands out. It tracks well and sounds great. You would need to spend a lot more to hear enough of a difference to justify a more expensive cartridge. If you feel the need to upgrade, you can always upgrade the stylus to an OM10, OM20, OM30 or OM40 stylus for even better performance. In short, for my money, there is no better cartridge in this price range.
Sounds amazing, love my new record deck and this cartridge is the icing on the cake. I had an Ortofon on a previous deck, which l bought in the late1970s, but time for a change of decks and this cartridge has brought a breath of fresh air to my record collection. Nice to hear the full frequency range again. CDs might be crackle free but they lack the depth and range of a deck with a superb cartridge.
To my ear Ortofon cartridges are always the undisputed winner and offer a significant improvement in audible reproduction in comparison to all other alternatives. This cartridge is a relatively inexpensive option within the Ortofon range but is in a different league to the factory fitted AT cartridge it replaced. Fitted to AT 120 deck connected to a vintage Quad 33/303 system playing through Wharfedale speakers, the improvement to vinyl playback and clarity is remarkable. Highly recommended.
An avid record collector in the 70s and 80s, I moved over to the "modern" CD as they took over. I purchased the Ortofon cartridge to bring my old turntable back to life and am once again enjoying the wonderful warm sound of great music on vinyl. The OM 5E gives a magnificent sound on budget price.
Easy install on my trusty old SONY PS-LX3 Stereo Turntable as suggested by Ortofon. Had previously tried another good brandwithout success. Tracks good, sounds great and am happy as always with B&H and this cartridge. Louie D
All praise to Richer Sounds Holborn for their knowledgeable advice and assistance. The new cartridge head, together with a good quality anti-static brush, both chosen from a list of alternatives, have brought my classical vinyls, many of them 50 or 60 years old, back to vibrant life. It's as if they had been restored from the dead. I'm over the moon.
