Excellent pack

This is my 3rd Tempest so that is a recommendation in itself. Love the design and fit. My first was just ready for replacement after a lot of use. The BEST feature is being able to Stow on the Go poles but on my second pack the fabric holding the elastic pull cord eventually wore out so I couldn’t hold the poles in place. Tried another brand but missed the accessible poles facility so much I have now bought my third Tempest. Only disappointment is that as I chose the smaller size, I believe the capacity is reduced. Maybe I should have known this before purchasing. Otherwise it’s perfect.

Excellent! So well designed.

Excellent daypack. Two of my kids had Tempests before I did, and I was jealous every time they used them. I finally splurged and grabbed one when Osprey was on sale, and I haven't looked back. The size is about perfect, and the fit is great and nicely adjustable. I can hike it up into the small of my back, or lower it down around my hips, depending on how things are feeling. When on my hips, there is great air flow; not quite as breezy when hugging the small of my back. Osprey's warranty is not to be rivalled, but I haven't had cause to test it. The zippers are well made and well designed, to they're not hard to pull like some other packs. Even on the hip pockets. Very nice. The dual position trekking pole system is awesome. It's nice to have them on the back and out of the way when they're more of a just-in-case piece of gear, but if you're using them a lot, on and off, the side-load system is great for grabbing as needed. I have a 2L Platypus reservoir, and I think my biggest beef with this pack is the tight fit getting the reservoir in. You absolutely have to wiggle it in empty, and then fill it, and it takes a little finagling to do. There have been a few times that the straps have got to rubbing my neck a little, but I think this is more of an adjustment issue, and I've always happened to have a sunshirt on, so just hiked up the hood a little to buffer, so haven't bothered to dial it in perfectly. Great pack, truly.

Finally no pain from a backpack!

Only used this once, so far, last Saturday to an Agricultural Show! It carried everything I needed plus some shopping and the weight didn't bother my bad back. I wrestled with the fit for some days and found all the online videos very helpful - keeping in mind the Osprey explanation of where the straps should fit etc. Eventually I got it just perfect and the weight was taken fully by my hips so there was no drag on my shoulders.I'm 5'2" female with a long back but found the WXS/S can be adjusted perfectly. Actually looking forward to summer hikes again! I would have given 5 stars but like most other people who have reviewed this bag IT NEEDS AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE MOBILE PHONE HOLDER AND A RAINCOVER INCORPORATED IN THE PRICE!!! Where to put my phone for easy access ... MoreOnly used this once, so far, last Saturday to an Agricultural Show! Where to put my phone for easy access was annoying. The day was so warm I wasn't wearing a jacket or gilet and being a small woman had no pockets it would safely go into in my jeans. Having tried multiple bags around this size admittedly none of them were any better for phone storage without where the pocket was for a phone being in the way......time to rethink Osprey and make the waist belt pockets slightly bigger!

Great daypack, but please check measurments
20 October 2023

I really wanted this daypack and… it’s awesome. Unfortunately it didn’t fit and thus became uncomfortable. I ordered a size large, because I’m 174 cm tall and I thought that would do it. It didn’t. Later I checked the sizing table on Osprey’s own website and discovered my torso length was bigger than this backpack would accomodate. I don’t have the link here, but please check your torso length before ordering. Otherwise: top quality and well thought over details. If it fits, go for it!

Hydration sleeve is useless
19 July 2024

I should've listened to the other reviewers who said the hydration sleeve is terrible. It literally takes a minimum of 5 minutes to wrestle it into the sleeve. The idea that you'd be able to fill the reservoir without taking it out is mind-boggling. It's such a tight squeeze that if you had anything in the pack at all, it would flatten the reservoir, making it impossible to fill. The opening at the top of the sleeve is smaller than the sleeve itself, so it's still a chore even if the pack is empty. I don't understand the point of having a hydration sleeve at all if you can apparently only fit a tiny reservoir in it. It's a fairly comfortable pack, but this is a deal breaker for me.

Nearly Perfect - lots to like

The Osprey Tempest 20L pack replaces a 25L pack from another manufacturer. I really like the 2 hip-belt zipper pockets, the ability to quickly stow my hiking poles while on the go, and this pack seems lighter than my previous one. I'm short but have a long torso so I purchased the M/L. It fits well, and I really like the ventilation provided by the AirScape back panel. However, there are 2 things that are just "meh". As others have noted, it's difficult to get a filled 3L water bladder into the space in the back. If I only fill my bladder to 1.5 L, I can wiggle it in, but a full 3L is more problematic. For shorter hikes, I put 2 water bottles into the side stretch-mesh pockets. Otherwise, I really like the pack and have enjoyed using it.

Not a great design
3 December 2023

My Flash 22 got torn up in a hail storm so I needed a new pack. I loved my Flash 22 but had read that the newer version didn't hold up so I went with the Tempest. There are a lot of flaws and it is not very functional. I cannot find a way to position the chest strap properly-- way too high, almost at my neck, and therefore useless. The hiking pole attachments are not practical at all. I don't want to be hitting my hiking poles with my arms on the hike. It's also really hard to get the hydration bladder into the pack and the tubing just never seems to sit right. I wish I had returned it sooner but I kept thinking I just needed to get used to it. I'm probably going to get the updated version of the flash 22.I'm 5'2" and 125lb

OK backpack
13 September 2024

It's really just OK. The size is perfect. I have a very short torso (5'3", 100lbs) so it's a much better fit than my previous pack that pulled on my shoulders a lot. The shoulder straps can be cinched down to accommodate my shorter torso, and the two cinching straps on the stop of the pack help bring the whole thing to a secure and good fit against my back to avoid shifting. The hip belt fits well and sit securely so that the weight is more distributed to my hips. There is more than enough room inside to accommodate everything I need for my long days hikes, including carrying two 3L water bladders (I typically go between 12-18 miles). However, my complaints are as follows:1: the water reservoir compartment needs work. If the pack is already packed with everything else, it's nearly impossible to get the filled bladder into the space. This can be rectified by putting the filled bladder in before you pack the pack BUT there are many things that I leave packed between hikes, such as a waterproof first aid kit, extra socks and sun shirt, pants, etc. If I want to switch out the bladders mid-hike (I usually carry two...one in the assigned spot and one in the regular section), trying to squeeze the new one into it's spot is tough. The designated reservoir is considerably too narrow.2: the shoulder straps are rough against bare skin. Totally an non-issue until I'm wearing it with a tank top. I experience irritation from this regularly.3: the method recommended to stow trekking poles is awful. Both poles are supposed to be put into straps on the left side, and they are basically on your side for the entire hike. I recommend you look up the user guide online to see a picture. I didn't think it would be a problem but I absolutely do not like this. Yes, they are easily accessible during hiking and can be stowed without taking the pack off, but I would much prefer to stow them on the front of the pack an have them NOT be right on my side while hiking. I've been putting them into the side pockets, which now lessens the space I have available to store things in an easy to grab spot on the side.Overall, it's OK and I make it work. But in all honesty, I will probably replace it when I have finances available. I feel like these three cons are big enough issues for me that I need to find something that works better.

One of my main go to bags for day hikes in the Rockies
6 December 2023

I recently purchased the Osprey Tempest Backpacking Pack 20L for my hiking adventures, and I must say it's been a game-changer. The design provides a perfect balance between durability and comfort, making it ideal for long treks. The 20L capacity is surprisingly spacious, allowing me to carry essentials without feeling weighed down. The ventilated back panel keeps me cool, and the adjustable hip belt ensures a snug fit. Overall, the Osprey Tempest 20L is a reliable and well-designed companion for any hiker.

Wish waist was more contoured and pocket deeper!
3 July 2024

Pretty good, but frankly, I actually expected a lot better. I have two issues:1. Water bottle pocket is so short! Anything I own just tumbles out.2. The fit of the hip belt is just so-so. I did get the correct size, and I don't have particularly wide hips, but here is the problem with it. The hip belt is cut basically straight, like a very wide but otherwise ordinary straight waistband. For it to sit on a woman's hip, it would have to be cut as an arc, so that it flares out toward the bottom edge. As is, if you tighten it properly, it just rides up to your waist, so the weight is not really held up by your hip, it is kinda tied around your waist. If you let it loosen a bit so it falls a few inches down to be supported by your hipbone, it feels like it is not ... MorePretty good, but frankly, I actually expected a lot better. I am going to take apart the front section of the waist and re-cut it to a better shape. It's a pretty expensive pack for experimenting with it like that (plus this will be a multi-day project even under the best circumstances), but the back does fit very well, so I am biting the bullet.
