I hesitated pulling the trigger on this purchase due to the price. I finally did so, hoping it would do all I need. Boy howdy, does it ever. I have a 2018 MacBook Air. It has plenty of life left in it, but only two USB-C ports. I've been struggling with a port adapter - lots of juggling of cables, losing connections to external drives, etc, Now, I plug one USB-C cable into my laptop and it is powered plus I have immediate access to my Ethernet network, Two external backup drives (one for CCC, one for Time Machine), a third external SSD for my music and photo libraries (due to the puny SSD in my laptop) and my USB-C portable monitor. When it's time to move out, I just use the provided Dock Ejector app from the menu bar, unplug the single cable, and I'm on my way.So ... MoreI hesitated pulling the trigger on this purchase due to the price. This dock has infinitely simplified my home desk setup. One cable to my laptop to connect my hard drives, monitor, keyboard, all audio hardware, and more? Unbelievably convenient. The only reason I'm giving it a 4-star rating is because I've recently encountered an issue when using one of my external hard drives with this dock. When plugged in to one of the 4 normal USB ports, it began showing up as an internal drive on my Mac. I lost ejecting functionality, and hard drive permissions changed. However, when I plugged it back in to one of the high-powered USB ports, it showed up normally as an external. I've done some research on this but haven't contacted support yet. From what I've seen, this issue has happened to a few others. Hoping to get to the bottom of it ... MoreThis dock has infinitely simplified my home desk setup. Works great, exactly as described. Gives me a lot more connectivity for my MacBook Pro.One minor quibble. I am using Sennheiser HD 598 headphones. I have encountered problems with earlier Sennheiser and Revox headphones when used on amplifiers designed for the US market. It seems that amplifiers made for the US market cannot deliver the voltage swing needed for some European headphones. (I have modified amplifiers in the past to increase the max voltage swing at the headphone jack.) The headphone output on this dock just barely makes it. Most of the time it is great, but for some tracks with extreme low frequencies at high volume there is clipping in my headphones. It is a pretty rare issue, but it is there. Probably only an issue for high-impedance headphones.

Great product, well made and giving me exactly the connections I needed. Also shipping and packaging were first rate. My only gripe is the size of the power block. This thing is bigger than the dock itself! I don't know what the minimum size for a 20V 9 Amp power supply is, but having been spoiled by years of tiny power adaptors, the size of this thing was a surprise. Amidst the forest of power adaptors I already have at my workstation, adding this beast was a little absurd. Any chance you OWC whizzes could get a smaller version of the power block?
Pricey but effective! The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock is exactly what I was looking for. USB A ports for legacy devices (I have 3 external HDD's that use USB A), a Thunderbolt port allowing Daisy Chaining multiple devices (future external Thunderbolt SSD's) , spdif out for digital audio ( I use this to connect my Dac/Amp for great music on my DT 770's), Sd and Micro SD card slots, and more. The size/weight allows you to connect devices without the dock moving around yet it's not oversized for everything it provides. Looks great and works great. I am using it with my 2021 M1 iMac that has limited ports so this dock was the proper dock for my needs.
I purchased the 14 port dock during a promotional period. Id been considering a thunderbolt dock to compliment my iMac Pro. The fact that the MDP supports my late 2009 iMac target display mode was a real boost to my product satisfaction! The dock itself seems well made and of good design. The external power supply, while understandably hefty, gives the dock some real USB-C PD chops! I would have liked to see more USB-C ports but the A ports provide sufficient connectivity. The fact that you cannot use the two flash card ports simultaneously is an understandable compromise and will likely never interfered with my work flow.
Went through several off-brand hubs for my new 2021 Macbook Pro and had nothing but problems, whether it be terrible monitor connections or the hubs running so hot it would burn your skin. Enter: this hub. As the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." Plugged everything in and this hub works like a charm. It stays cool to the touch and now I have a nice clean way to plug my Mac into my desk setup - which includes two HDMI monitors, a portable USB monitor, keyboard, mouse, external storage, ethernet, speakers. My only complaint is it would be nice if the cord they package with the hub was a tad longer.
We live out in rural Alaska, and I set up my wife's home office desk where there is a view, and a hard wired ethernet wall jack. No room for a bunch of wires. Running on the 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro was adequate with a smaller OWC travel dock until she got an Apple Watch also, and she started running out of USB-C ports and charging capabilities. This larger dock is fantastic in that it replaces a bunch of small power supplies under the desk, and eliminates those wires on top, and handles all charging duties well. One Thunderbolt plug and the laptop is totally portable to go with all her travel power supplies and cables already packed in the computer bag.The wired ethernet and USB-C ports all work without a hitch. Using with dock with a late 2020 MacBookPro 13 M1 w 16gig. I love having just one cable to attach to an external dock for all attachments including power!Using the dock with an external 4k display, 3 or 4 hard drives, and a secondary older USB 2.0 dock (a/c powered) that I attach to this dock -- for a variety of low powered external devices such as camera or microphone.IMPORTANT: The dock great with the enclosed half meter cable but when I tried a longer cable, it failed to drive everything adequately, even though I checked the spec carefully and also it was a reliable brand (I think it was Anker).I read a LOT about Thunderbolt 3 cables that afternoon and what I found is that everything DOES change once you exceed half a meter. You may notice that a one meter ... MoreUsing with dock with a late 2020 MacBookPro 13 M1 w 16gig. Why? There is some kind of extra internal circuit needed once you exceed the half meter point. Still, even with a proper one meter Thunderbolt 3 cable I could not get the full capabilities to work as I described above.I did not try other brands of cables, just decided to leave well enough alone.
OWC used to be awesome. i've bought so many drives over the years.but the last 2 items i bought, this dock included, were a disaster. for my 1 year old laptop, it created endless kernel panics and bricked my mac. i got on with support, and bless his heart, he tried to revive my mac. but he couldn't, so that was that. he said he was out of ideas and someone would call me back. no one ever did.so i revived it on my own, as apparently it was my job to sort out the damage they had done. but from then on, i had a runaway kernel process on my mac, taking up all the CPU. i ended up buying a new laptop because of it.so thanks OWC. thanks for the terrible product, the friendly but incompetent support, and for putting me out of pocket to clean up the devastation left by your ... MoreOWC used to be awesome. i've bought so many drives over the years.but the last 2 items i bought, this dock included, were a disaster. for my 1 year old laptop, it created endless kernel panics and bricked my mac. i got on with support, and bless his heart, he tried to revive my mac. but he couldn't, so that was that. he said he was out of ideas and someone would call me back. no one ever did.so i revived it on my own, as apparently it was my job to sort out the damage they had done. but from then on, i had a runaway kernel process on my mac, taking up all the CPU. i ended up buying a new laptop because of it.so thanks OWC. thanks for the terrible product, the friendly but incompetent support, and for putting me out of pocket to clean up the devastation left by your products. never again.
