A Great NVMe Enclosure
4 August 2024Owen

Brought this unit to house a 4TB NVMe SSD. Super easy to do. Open the case after unscrewing a few screws. Lock in the SSD. And it works like a charm. The case is a solid aluminum construction. Very sturdy. The enclosure has the fins design for heat dissipation. So far I transferred over 2.5TB content without heating up the unit other than just warm to the touch. The unit together with the thunderbolt cable offers much faster read and write speed than off the shelve portable SSD. The combined prices are comparable too.

As fast as my M2 Mac Studio's internal SSD using a WD BLACK 4TB SN850X SSD

I knew immediately that the OWC solution would work great, had an all heatsink design with no fans and OWC quality. I received mine this week and slapped in the WD Black SN850X 4TB and attached it to my Mac Studio and immediately ran Black Magic. Had high hopes for this enclosure but it absolutely does not perform as advertised. I had both the the 1T version I bought from B&H and the empty enclosure I bought directly from OWC (because it was not available on B&H) with both performing exactly the same way. Tested it by transferring a large folder (about 70gigs) from my internal PCI 5 internal hard drive with OWC connected to one of the USB 4 port. It started off at over 2000mbs rate but instantly dropped down to around 500mbs and stayed there. Contacted OWC support and the rep not being able to assist, mentioned that the enclosure is new and I should contact the support for my motherboard to ensure it is fully updated. To add salt to the womb, the company has the most painstaking return process I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing along with a 15% restocking fee. The rep attempted to ask a ton of questions about the system I was using etc etc, even after I told him that I used another enclosure the same way and got the advertised performance, to the point where I had to annoying said I am done answering questions and just want to return the unit. The rep then put me on hold for almost 10 mins to supposedly work on the RMA only to come back on the phone to get my email address as he claimed he was still working on it and will send the RMA to my email address once done. I guess B&H has spoilt us with their out of this world amazing return procedure. There are no other company like B&H when it comes to purchasing or returning. I will never buy another OWC product directly from them or any of their product for that matter due to my experience. B&H has set the gold standard in consumer experience.

Excellent High Capacity Bus-Powered Hard Drive
18 July 2024

I purchased the 4 TB version to replace a 2 TB Envoy Pro Elektron that had filled up. The Pro Elektron is smaller, but doesn't have Thunderbolt and gets really warm when in use. The Express is very intelligently designed; the whole body functions as a heat sink.I can't comment on durability because I've only had it a few weeks, but if it is as reliable as all my (many) other purchases from OWC have been, it will be a winner!

Fast and well build
18 May 2024

This is by far the fastest external m.2 SSD enclosure I have now. It reaches the advertised speeds (I do have to use the cable they ship it with). I have many other brands enclosures with thunderbolt interface and get about 1400 MB/s Write and 2100 MB/s Read speeds. With the OWC Express I get over 3000 MB/s Write and Read speed. Oddly if I use one of my other thunderbolt cables it gets only 900 MB/s write and 900 MB/s read speed, even though using the same thunderbolt cable with other enclosures I still get the 1400 MB/s and 2100 MB/s speed. Maybe I have to do more testing to see why this is. I certainly will buy more of the OWC Express enclosures.

Great so far
29 July 2024

When I first hooked it up to my MacBook M1 Pro, the MacBook only connected to it at USB 3.1 speed. No problem when connected via my OWC TB4 dock, so I rebooted the MacBook and had no problem connecting at USB4 speeds. The problem may have been because the NVMe card had previously been mounted in a USB 3 dock.No problem with getting ~3 GB/s speeds either directly connected or through the dock. Moving all my VMs and big games onto the this drive was a big win. I know the internal Apple drive is twice as fast, but I cant tell the difference.

Only USB 10Gb/s when connecting to Thunderbolt 3 host port
27 July 2024

This OWC Express 1M2 USB SSD enclosure looks premium, but when it's connecting to Thunderbolt 3 port of dock or MacbookPro, it'll take a long time to negoticate and recognize as a USB3.1Gen2 device which only runs at 10Gb/s. I have other USB4.0 SSD enclosures from Satechi and Orico which use the same chip controller, and they don't have such problem. They all can run at 40Gb/s with Thunderbolt 3 connection, and give SSD read/write at ~3000MB/s. This OWC thunderbolt solution is really bad.

This thing ROCKS!
19 January 2024

I ordered the 0TB enclosure and found an 8TB NVMe on Amazon at a good price. Very easy to put together and it worked instantly. It's plugged into one of the 4 ports on my M1 MacBook Pro and the speeds are as advertised! No more waiting to copy large files from one drive to another or saving a Final Cut Pro project or duplicating a video or stepping through a long list of photos with the down arrow... everything is INSTANT. Very highly recommended!

Unbelievable Speeds and Compatibility

With the cost of internal drives on the Apple Silicone Mac's I wanted to see if I could come close to the internal drive speeds with an external drive. I also wanted that drive to be backwards compatible with my 2010 classic Mac Pro 5,1 running the Sonnet USB 3.2 PCI card.I paired this with a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro drive, formatted it on my M1 Mac mini and did a speed test and was blown away. Almost the exact same speed as my internal drive. I then moved it over to my cMac Pro, plugged it into my USB3.2 Card and was thrilled when the drive mounted and showed the same BLISTERINGLY FAST READ/WRITE.I've only had it a few weeks but I can say my Resolve 18 exports are faster and editing in Premiere Pro feels faster too.The speed test results are on a fairly packed drive ... MoreWith the cost of internal drives on the Apple Silicone Mac's I wanted to see if I could come close to the internal drive speeds with an external drive. WOW!
26 January 2024

This is the first real external drive that really performs. I set it up as a boot drive for my Mac Studio running Sonoma. It ran almost as fast as the internal drive (4TB). I really could hardly tell the difference. I used a Sabrent 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe TLC SSD memory stick and all I can say is WOW!
