It says you have to calibrate it against 94dB output source. But going from another user I'll accept that it is near enough. The instructions are totally useless. So I'll put some here: hold means it stores the current reading with a short press of the button and displays a H; fast/slow means the display changes with fluctuating sound levels can be slowed down so it doesn't flicker so much; light is activated by holding the button down for a couple of seconds. I can't quite work out the min/max.

Good well rounded product.
Did numerous tests, it's stable, fairly accurate. Good enough for me. I can get it tested through a sound engineer friend but you know what I couldn't be bothered. It's MORE the good enough for home use.
Works great seems to be pretty accurate, I'm satisfied
