Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm F1.7 ASPH Silver (HX015 )

PANASONIC 15mm F1.7 ASPH Silver + HOYA UX UV 46mm Filter Fast and versatile, the Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH. from Panasonic is a 30mm equivalent wide-angle lens for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Its bright f/1.7 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also avails greater control over the focus position for shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. Intuitive control over the aperture selection is also possible through the use of the manual aperture ring. In regard to focus, an internal focusing system with a stepping AF motor promotes fast, quiet, and smooth performance. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements to reduce distortion and spherical aberration for sharper imagery with greater overall clarity. Additionally, a Nano Surface Coating has been applied to lens elements to suppress lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral photos and movies. Prime wide-angle lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and offers a 30mm equivalent focal length. Fast f/1.7 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and is also useful for controlling depth of field for selective focus applications. Three aspherical elements help to reduce spherical aberration and distortion to produce sharp, clear imagery. A Nano Surface Coating minimizes surface reflections throughout the entire visible spectrum for maintained contrast and color fidelity with a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting. An internal focusing system, coupled with a stepping AF motor, results in fast, smooth, and precise focusing performance that is well-paired to both still shooting and movie recording. Metal lens barrel is accentuated by a dedicated MF/AF switch and an aperture ring for more direct, intuitive operation. Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Clunky and disappointing

This is the third time I have used this lens, and this particular one was not great. It was extremely tight to put on the camera, making lens swaps slower than I would have preferred. The switch between manual focus and auto focus was quite loose, this also caused problems with the switch being moved a few times by mistake. Resulted in disappointment due to blurry pictures. Most were great. Probably won’t rent this one again.

This is the first Panasonic Leica prime lens that I have purchased after already owning the 8-18, 12-60, 50-200 and 100-400 lenses. This lens is small, very small, and pairs quite nicely with my Lumix GX-8, and should easily pair with my G-9 as well. This lens offers a aperture ring, and it works quite well thus far, covering f/1.7 to f/16. I was looking for a moderately wide prime lens as I shoot landscape, cityscape and wildlife (the later not with this lens). The images are clean and sharp with solid color renderings in the short time I have had this lens. I had looked at the 12mm f/1.4 and this lens, and this one could be had for less than one half the price of the other lens, and is a good value for the price. Good compact lens with a quirk

What I like most about this lens is its compactness and excellent images at f/1.7 in low light situations. The only quirk is that the aperture ring gets knocked and moved. I had trouble not knowing what was going on.I gave it four stars because in bright lighting (stage lighting artificial lighting at events), colors can be washed out. This does not happen in bright daylight. I am comparing this to Olympus 12-40/2.8 PRO and Olympus 40-150/2.8 PRO. Both do well under similar lighting, and the 40-150 does especially well.

Leica does it again

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH is really a Leica lens. I have many Leica lenses for M cameras and this stacks up well. It's very close to 28mm more so than 35mm. It focuses very fast and accurately. The color is delicious and contrasts very well controlled. Snappy but not overly done. It's very lightweight and for the street, a must-have. The field of view is similar to a 28mm. This gives you a nice comfortable stance. Even at very close focus, very fast focus. Sharpness is excellent. Wide open at f1.7 sharp al;l across the frame. Slight distortion but nothing to be concerned about. At f4.0-5.6, it's amazing and really holds the Leica banner proudly. This is a mush have lens for M43.If you order this, get it from B&H. Leica quality

Having a lot of fun with this lens. At 15mm (30mm FF equivalent), it's a very comfortable focal length for more casual settings (street or with friends and family). That special Leica quality really comes through when shooting in mono.Delivery was relatively quick and arrived safely. Price was very competitive.

Nice - especially for high res mode on G9
7 December 2019

I compared this lens to my Lumix 20 mm F/1.7 Mark 1 (bought way back in 2010) on my Lumix G9. This lens is sharp corner-to-corner when wide open, the Lumix 20 mm isn't. The difference was astonishing to me given the wider field of view of the 15.And the 15 really shines when using it for 40 MP high res mode, even wide open. It's so good wide open I can't be bothered with any more testing stopped down. Just the tiniest amount of spherochromatism (see Ken Rockwell) that I'm sure goes away at higher F#'s.My problem now is this. I compared it to the Lumix 12-32 mm F/3.5-5.6 compact zoom that came with my GM5, and I gotta say that when I set the zoom at 15 mm (F/3.8) it's quite hard to tell the difference between this marvelous little zoom lens and the 15 at ... MoreI compared this lens to my Lumix 20 mm F/1.7 Mark 1 (bought way back in 2010) on my Lumix G9. That compact zoom is a terrific go anywhere do anything sort of lens, it does have more utility. I wish they'd bring back the GM5 with a finger grip, 20 MP sensor and better viewfinder. The GM5 exemplified one of the best selling points of Micro 4/3rds over full frame - compactness. I love the G9 but the GM5 is still the one I carry more often. But I'm getting off topic.I think if you love primes, you'll love this 15 mm gem.

One of Panasonic's best lenses, maybe even the best.
16 August 2021

When I returned to MFT at the end of last year, the Panasonic-Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7 was the first prime I bought. But later, I also bought the Olympus M Zuiko 12mm f2 and M Zuiko 17mm f1.8. It didn't seem to make sense to have three lenses with their focal length so close together, so after some thought, I decided to sell the 15mm and keep the two Olympus lenses. However it didn't take long for me to realize that the PL 15mm was my most used lens, for many good reasons, and I sold the wrong lens. So I reversed my mistake by buying a new PL 15mm and selling the Olympus. I mostly shoot landscape, historic homes, and travel photos; the PL15 is excellent at all three. I particularly like the aperture ring, that works on Panasonic bodies, but not Olympus, to quickly change the aperture when needed without even having to look at the lens. The AF/MF switch is also handy for changing from AF to MF for fine tuning focus. All of the photos were taken with the Panasonic GM5, Panasonic GX9, and the Panasonic-Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7

Overall a very good lens
6 June 2024

This lens is small, light, with excellent build quality and excellent optics. However, there are a couple of things that detract from the handling. One is the aperture ring; it needs a lock on the Auto position, otherwise when mounting or removing the lens it spins round. It is also easy to move it out of position when in use. The other thing is the lens hood, which could also be improved with a lock, otherwise it too can come loose when twisting the lens on or off the camera body. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this lens and its somewhat unusual focal length.

Overpriced and underwhelming
9 November 2022

The build is really nice, the lens hood is cute but not effective. It's not weather sealed at this price. The focus speed is pretty poor and sluggish - on an Olympus OM-5 anyway. The image quality is good but not great, not Leica wow. My underwhelmed impression is increased by the fact that the (awesome) direct aperture control on this Pany lens doesn't function on Oly cameras. C'mon guys.I am huge fan of the 35mm (FF) focal length and somehow find the 28mm dull, this lens as a personal point only, seems to hit 28mm (30mm officially). So overall, there is a lot to like, but not to love. It should have been weather sealed. The aperture ring should work on Oly cameras. The reflections should be better handled by the Leica's magic coating. The Pany 25 f1.4 is also really good. All these are a cut above the Pany 15 f1.7.I hope this helps. Get out shooting.

Sharp, Compact and Fast

I owned this lens a couple of years ago before I sold off all my Lumix equipment. Now I just got back into micro four thirds, but with Olympus bodies this time. I do a lot of low light events, including theater, For that, I need a moderately wide lens faster than my f/2.8 zoom. The 15mm f/1.7 fits the bill. It is very sharp and also very compact. And f/1.7 is perfect for dark venues. This lens has a couple of features that I actually don't like that much. The manual aperture ring can easily get accidentally moved to another aperture. But Olympus ignores the aperture ring. So, no problem. Also, the 15mm lens has a regular lens cap but also has a metal lens shade that has its own rubber outer lens cap. The B&H used lens listing for this lens didn't mention a lens shade. So, I figured it wasn't included, which wasn't a problem. But upon opening the package, it was there! Nice surprise. Better to have it than not have it.
