With the regular GH5 I start to see noise at ISO 3200. On the GH5s I don't see any noise until ISO 40,000. This is a huge improvement. I carefully matched all settings before doing this test and used the Cinelike-D gamma setting. I can't imagine I would ever need to go this high on the ISO and would recommend staying close to the native ISOs whenever possible but it is nice to know you can.Larger Sensor: The GH5s has a 9% larger sensor than the GH5. This gives a noticeably wider field of view. It is not APSC or Full frame but is a improvement.Much less Sensor Reflections:Sensor reflections are not lens flares. They occur when bright light goes through the lens, hits the sensor and some of it bounces back and hits the back element of the lens and bounces back to the sensor creating a second ghost image of the light source. They are most noticeable with bright highlights (windows, lamps, Christmas lights etc). All digital camera have them to some extent but some are worse than others. Panasonic cameras have always had very shiny sensors and some of the worst sensor reflections I have seen, with the GH5 one of the worst offenders. My Sony a7r2 is much better in this regard with very minimal sensor reflections, although it can't match the video capabilities of the GH5 in other ways (It only shoots 8 bit video up to 100Mbps in 4k) I'm happy to report that the sensor reflections are much reduced in the GH5s and are on a par with the Sony. This is especially good as the GH5s is such a great low light camera you are going to want to use it for night exteriors with streetlights, car headlights and other light sources in the shot.Improved Color:Panasonic has improved the color science of this camera in all gamma settings. The slight green cast of the GH5 is gone and colors look more natural with a slightly redder look on the GH5s at the same settings. I certainly prefer it to the GH5. V-log and Hybrid Log gamma come pre-installed at no additional cost if you want to do color grading in post.If you do a lot of handheld shooting this is probably not the camera for you as there is no stabilizer (Panasonic stabilized lenses will work with it). In order to make the sensor a bit bigger Panasonic had to do away with the stabilizer. This is fine with me as I always use a gimbal for handheld work but it is good to keep in mind. Also at only 10.28 MP it is hardly a high resolution still camera, although it's stills look surprisingly good and should be fine for use on the web and many other uses. It is primarily a video camera and a very good one. It is also a excellent value at even regular price.

Although I'm interested in an update to these cameras (a GH6?) I don't feel that resolution is an area that needs to be improved. I shoot video in 1080p, and don't even want the hassle of dealing with the larger files of 4K video that the GH5 supports. 10-bit colour depth is more important, and V-Log by default would be good. First off, give a numerical focus scale on the OSD, not just a line that moves between a mountain and a flower! Secondly, allow remote control of the focus using bluetooth - allowing focus pullers to use a remote focus control device. These kind of things would be game-changers for indie film makers.

The GH5s is a great camera. My GH5s is a used camera but everything is checking out well. Looking forward to using the camera for video, as well as still, photography. My Panasonic lenses work perfectly with this camera. The optical image stabilization is in the lens as there is no stabilization in the camera body...stabilization switch on lens will set the icon on the LCD display. No IBIS was done to offer a new/larger image sensor. The controls are in the same places as my G6/G7 cameras. The display/recall button is now in the upper left-side of the LCD by the LVF button. Menus seem almost identical to G6/G7 cameras but have mounds of more features/settings. Especially looking forward to trying out all the various video settings. I think this is more of a FedEx issue than anything, but my camera was not delivered to the FedEx store I shipped it to, and no reason was given. Thankfully it did show up the next day, and I did receive a call from LensRentals support team about it.However, for a wedding shoot, not having a camera show up is pretty nerve-wracking. I've never had trouble with UPS, so having this issue with FedEx is probably more about them than LR.I absolutely love everything else about this company. Great gear, great communication, branding, packaging... blows the competition out of the water.
I ordered the GH5 ii on sale as a third camera to go with my two GH5s. The new menu system is great but somehow the footage looks noticeably worse than my GH5. The colors just don't look natural and there seems to be some smearing in the skin tones, shadows just look bad. I thought it might have been the noise reduction so I turned it down a couple of notches which made the image look a bit more natural but iso 3200 which I never had problems with is now nearly unusable at how grainy it is. The Cine D 2 is also unusable. It looks so blotchy and seeing some weird color shifting. I want to love this camera but I have had nothing but issues with it since I got it. I want to exchange it for another to see if its just my camera or is the OG GH5 better.
Bought this initially for the extra stabilisation since I mainly film aerial subjects. It turns out this is essentially a new camera as opposed to a GH5 upgrade and now I'm selling my GH5. Color science has improved, raw stills are now 14bit and Panasonic have added DR into the highlights creating much better roll-off and toning. Some of the profiles like L Neo Classic and Flat give interesting options especially in able to give a Kodak Portra look when printed on paper. Stills auto focus is lightening fast and looks very capable in video though I prefer manual. Excellent cammera and value.
It can be synced and controlled with up to four cameras, using a PC laptop or suitable notebook. The timecode and start/stop record all controlled. With auto lenses, the focus, white balance, iso, photo style all can be computer controlled. It can be streamed using OBS multiple cameras using a suitable switcher. It has many many professional options for filmmakers, but makes an exceptionally good photographer's camera too. It also allows you complete access to the hugely popular and highly successful micro four thirds system of lenses. Which gives access to specialist film dedicated lenses such as the Sirui anamorphic, and also the deluxe Leica series of Panasonic lenses. An absolutely superb camera.

Super35 is the cinematic gold standard. Crop from S35 to M43 is only 1.5. So f2.8 on M43 = f4.2 on S35. Most feature films live between f3.5-f5.6. So you can get cinematic DoF with the GH5 II.Audio. I use the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 mic adapter. It is (almost) perfect. (I wish the knobs had a little more resistance to them, they feel slippery and it makes me nervous.) Single shotgun mic with a y-adapter gives me great audio with a safety channel. BMPCC4K can't do that.V-Log L. It's included and it looks great as long as you're in 10bit.I love, love, love the GH5 II. It is totally underrated.(The GH6 is $500 more and what do you get? An extra stop of dynamic range at ISO2000 + bad streaking around windows and other bright light sources + mis-matched memory card slots + a body the size of a freight truck? Pffft. No thanks.)What would make the GH5 II better?- Full v-log, like its Panasonic FF brothers.- ProRes Proxy. That's right, I said proxy. I shoot 6k open gate and deliver HD on YouTube and Bluray. Proxy is plenty. I like my file sizes small and easily digestible, thank you.
I've been shooting mirrorless cameras since the Lumix G1 came out. I've had a mix of Olympus, Panasonic and Sony micro four thirds (MFT) and full frame cameras, and always seem to come back to Panasonic because of their ease of use, good menu system, and versatility. This was my third Lumix MFT. I'm not a video photographer, so the GH5 is a bit of overkill for me, and I'm in the process of replacing it with a G9. I generally have both a full frame and a MFT and use a lot of adapted film camera lenses. This combo makes each lens have two effective focal lengths. I think the image quality of the MFT format equals that of the full-frame in good light.
