I lined up and synced each camera to the master audio (only used the audio from each camera's internal speaker to sync to the DR-40x track) in Premiere, and after a couple hours of editing, had a finished, high-quality HD video for streaming with a clean audio track. No issues with any of the viewfinder OSD graphics appearing on the video output, as it would with the G85 and my wife's Sony a6000.Highly recommend this camera. It's been a workhorse and never let me down. When the pandemic hit, I was asked by a local church if I could shoot video of the Sunday service in advance, edit it, and post online for distanced viewing. I set up the G85 on one tripod with the 14-140mm lens, the ZS70 on another (it has a 30x optical zoom), and a Canon Vixia I had lying around on a third tripod. I would start all the cameras (each shooting 1280x720 HD video) plus a TASCAM DR-40x recorder connected to the church's house audio system.

After using it for about 2 months, I can say that this is a great camera for the price. It is great for stills and for videos. Picture quality does not leave me wanting, and the flip out screen is a nice touch. The intelligent auto mode is great for when you don't want to think too hard and just wanna get shots. And the manual video mode is great for dialing in the look you want. The continuous autofocus isn't perfect, but it is definitely convenient coming from a BMPCC4K with no autofocus at all. I also really like the Wi-Fi picture transfers and remote control (which has a live monitor). My only complaints are that it doesn't do great in low light, and that the focus before snapping a still is sometimes slow. All in all, I'm really happy I bought this camera. ... MoreAfter using it for about 2 months, I can say that this is a great camera for the price. Enjoying my New Camera
17 August 2023

I'm still getting to know my new camera. It's an upgrade for me from the G Lumix series. I've been practicing with the Hummingbirds and having fun comparing photos from this G85 to my 11 year old DMC-G6. I really love the G series mirrorless cameras. The G85 weighs about a pound more than my original camera. Natural lighting shots are great! I need to spend more time working with low-light photos but I think it will work out great. I sent my first G85 back as it would not focus in low-light. I believe it was defective. B & H replaced it with immediately after I called. The first photo I posted was taken with the Lumix G85, the second photo with my DMC-G6.

Even better than expected

When I decided to get a DSLM camera for a Christmas gift for my wife, I have to admit it was harder than I thought it would be. I did a lot of research and started out thinking I would go with the Sony A6000. Being a Sony, the quality would not be in question. But after digging a little deeper I had a few doubts. The Sony could only use Sony lenses which are great but expensive. Also the less user friendly stability, anti-shake feature concerned me to some degree. The Canon and Nikon were less advanced in my price range. All the reviews pointed at the Lumix. After I started digging into the Lumix G85, it checked off all the boxes. It is water and dust resistant, it features anti-shake in both the camera and the lens, the menu is feature loaded yet fairly simple to navigate, and the micro four thirds format allows for the use of lots of other lenses by other manufacturers as well. We were able to take great photos immediately! Focusing is fast and easy. The 16 megapixel rating was a concern as opposed to the 20 megapixel Sony, but after shooting l couldn’t be happier with the quality. The shots are smooth and vibrant even after zooming and blowing up the subjects. The video is super with good sound and so easy to use. The battery life is very good and Wi-Fi pairing was a breeze as well. In short, this is a perfect everyday use camera that is easy and fun. It is light and balanced and is feature loaded and I am a big fan and completely satisfied.

Excellent entry to transition DSLR to Mirrorless
9 September 2022

Been wanting to make the jump to mirrorless for years but the price of entry was too high. I have Lumix point & shoots, so picked this up as an open box ($70 off) since I'm familiar with the functions and menuI've been delighted, capturing both pics I otherwise haven't been able to using 4K burst mode as well as shooting both JPG and RAW formats flawlessly (pics attached)The fully articulating screen is great as well as the 12-60 kit lensDownsides include continuous AF (searches too much, so better to keep it on single AF), battery life (don't expect a full day of shooting, especially if using video) and shooing in low lightIf you have realistic expectations, this is a terrific intro mirrorless camera

Incredible Value
11 September 2023

In this day of camera smart-phones, is there still a place for DSLRs?I say yes, if you actually want to take pictures rather than snapshots and if you are willing spend some money and are ready to haul some stuff around to take those pictures. I settled on the Micro 4/3 format because it is the most easily portable DSLR camera, and therefore the most likely to be used by me. I don't see myself printing larger than 8x10 photos so 16mp is more than enough and overkill for social media. The regular-speed 4K video is more than adequate for and videography I will be doing (invest in a good mike to up your game).A HUGE plus is the fact that this camera and kit lens that cam with it are weather-sealed so I have peace of mind taking it on a hike.I look forward for ... MoreIn this day of camera smart-phones, is there still a place for DSLRs?I say yes, if you actually want to take pictures rather than snapshots and if you are willing spend some money and are ready to haul some stuff around to take those pictures. It allows you to follow your child on the field and to get the shots you really want with having to take thousands of pictures. There are trade-offs for not going full-frame sensor (e.g. low-light performance, less depth of field) but the price differential, $697 on sale with a 12-60mm weather proof lens, rather than thousands for the bigger camera? It was a no brainer for me.Great ergonomics, custom setting modes that can be saved to allow up to 4 different set-ups, a very good and versatile kit lens (24-120mm 35mm equivalent focal length) all in a camera that I will take on day hikes.Go on Youtube and watch some videos about what this camera can do. You will see that it is still more than adequate for a hobby-enthusiast. It has rekindled my love of photography. Happy snapping!

Outdoor photographers will want this camera!
5 December 2021

I have lost two camera to weather. One simply because the humidity killed it. One simply because of a little dust in the air. This had till now severely limited my pursuit of photography outdoors. This camera is a little miracle! It's weatherization allows one to use it in most outdoor situations without having to take great pains to protect it from the weather, or other adverse conditions experienced outdoors. I don't need any contraptions to protect it - it simply hangs from my neck and is easy to operate. The camera body fits my hand easily, and provides easy access to all controls. The lens provided (which is also weatherized) is excellent for the broad range of situations I encounter outdoors. I have attached 4 sample photos - be aware that each had to be sized down to meet the size constraints of the website. One is a shot of a cardinal high up on a tree top. It was taken at max zoom, handheld. Another is of a pileated woodpecker that I was able to get closer to. It too was taken at max zoom, handheld. The dual stabilization does a fantastic job. Another shot is of the near total eclipse of the moon on 19 Nov 2021, at maximum extinction. It was taken at max zoom, handheld, at below freezing temperatures. Finally is a picture of a dramatic sunrise, taken at mid zoom, handheld. This camera has opened up a whole new world of photography for me. I highly recommend it!

Replacing my Nikon D7100!
16 April 2018

The Panasonic G85 is a Fantastic Camera! I bought the G85 in order to evaluate the Micro Four Thirds format. I had only intended to use MFT as an always-handy second system that I could take to work, or travel, etc. My Nikon system would still be the 'Real Photography' set-up for studio shooting, etc.I exclusively used the G85 for several months in order to get familiar with its features and operation. When I went back to using my Nikon D7100 I was shocked at how many of the features I had grown used to with the Panasonic G85. Either camera will take fantastic photos, but here are a few things that I enjoy about the G85:- Tilt Screen. When I went back to using my Nikon D7100 I was shocked at how many of the features I had grown used to with the Panasonic G85. Either camera will take fantastic photos, but here are a few things that I enjoy about the G85:- Tilt Screen. I've actually always preferred a fixed screen as that is one less moving part to cause trouble on a camera. However, one of the first things I missed when I went back to the D7100 was a tilting screen. I was working a table-top shot from above the table and my viewfinder was facing the ceiling...the D7100 was about 6" above my eye-level....and I had to get a stepping stool to frame-up the shot! Had I used the G85 I could have flipped the screen out to frame-up the shot. - Face/Eye Recognition. When doing a Senior portrait session earlier this month I had the D7100 and the G85 on-hand. The D7100 was my main shooter, and the G85 was packed as a backup-camera. In the end I used both cameras during the shoot with the G85's face/eye recognition nailing focus more often than the D7100 could. - Burst Speed with Raw: When shooting high-school track events the D7100's multi-frame burst stopped after about 5 frames when shooting RAW. The G85 has always taken as many frames as I wanted. (I usually need about 8-12 frames per burst.) I was shooting RAW+JPEG on these occasions. If I switch the D7100 to JPEG only it's fine, but I wanted RAW files for this particular shoot. The Nikon always stopped 2-3 frames too soon for what I was shooting. The G85 gave me all I wanted...and had more frames to give!- Stabilization: WOW! The 5-axis image stabilization works fantastic! For still subjects, you can absolutely shoot slower shutter speeds so that you can raise your ISO. It's another feature I never wanted...but now that I have...I don't want to ever give up!- Smaller, Lighter: I sure enjoyed carrying a large Nikon around...it just felt good and substantial in the hands. But there are advantages to a smaller and lighter set-up that delivers comparable images...so a nod goes to the G85 for portability. And the G85 still fits nicely in my large hands. The Cons:- The biggest con shooting the G85 vs the D7100 is that it's hard to follow fast action with the Electronic Viewfinder, I'm still trying to learn some techniques to better follow action with the EVF. (Biggest help is turning off auto-review!) That aside though, when looking through the G85's viewfinder I still feel like I'm using a DSLR...everything moves quite smoothly and I have no concept that I'm viewing an electronic image.Given this experience with the G85, I have considered combining my 2 systems into one system with a larger variety of lenses. However, I can only sell my Nikon equipment if the RAW files from the G85 will compare favorably to the RAW files from the D7100. I spent a weekend comparing shots between the two cameras with comparable lenses to see if I noticed any significant difference in the images produced. Aside from the fact that the D7100's 24MP files are physically bigger than the 16MP G85's, I could not find a substantial photographic difference between the two systems.I tried REAL hard to find out where the D7100's APS-C sensor would out-perform the G85...but could not find any comparison shot where the G85's image quality was lacking when compared to the Nikon D7100. The larger file size is the biggest advantage of the D7100 over the G85. (Although, when it comes to storage that's not an advantage either!) In the end, I concluded that I spent too many hours trying to find a significant difference between the files produced by the two cameras. If I can't find a clear difference after hours of comparing 20-30 images...then the cameras deliver equivalent images and that is no longer a factor in decidingwhich system will be my primary shooting system. The quality and features of the Lumix G85 have convinced me that I can have the light-weight system AND a serious system in one format. I now plan to sell my Nikon gear and add more variety to my lens collection. I'll be adding a second Panasonic body...and atthe moment I really want that to be a G85. (Well, I WANT it to be a G9...but I'll most likely replace the D7100 with another G85!)

Wanted a lighter system for traveling
7 July 2020

For the last 29 years I have been a Minolta/Sony Camera user and currently have a Sony A7R and previously owned an A7 and A6500. The Sony's are great cameras and take really great photos. I am now at a stage in life where traveling and moving around with full frame and SPSC lens are becoming a burden and just not worth the effort physically and artistically.I have always been fascinated with the Micro Four Thirds system and it's smaller lens size. I finally decided to ignore the conventional wisdom and bought the Lumix DMC-G85 a few weeks ago. Currently I am using a Lumix G Vario 12-35 F2.8 and 14-150mm F 3.5. These two lenses give me pretty much all the range I need and the weight of bot lenses together is approximately one pound and half the size of my other ... MoreFor the last 29 years I have been a Minolta/Sony Camera user and currently have a Sony A7R and previously owned an A7 and A6500. I finally decided to ignore the conventional wisdom and bought the Lumix DMC-G85 a few weeks ago. Currently I am using a Lumix G Vario 12-35 F2.8 and 14-150mm F 3.5. These two lenses give me pretty much all the range I need and the weight of bot lenses together is approximately one pound and half the size of my other lens.My first experience in shooting with G85 was that I discover some noise in some of my initial photos, something I hadn't really noticed with my Sony system. After doing research on settings and post processing in Lightroom, and I now have it under control and am happy with the images so far.I really like the feel of the G85 with it's larger grip than some of the other Olympus and Lumix models. I love being able to put the body and two of my lens in a much smaller bag and carrying less total weight. There is a feeling of freedom when using a lighter camera system. I found the menu system easy to adapt to. Knowing that I have a full frame camera for those situations where I need to capture the ultimate in image quality is nice, but I have a feeling that those situations may be fewer and further in between. Photography is about compromise. Micro four thirds may someday, soon, become my only camera system.
