Fantastic camera. Can get some really good shots with this. It will probably take a while to get through all of the settings and understand the camera and how you can function it to shoot the pictures you want. It was hard at first as there are many buttons, I would say this isn’t a beginners camera. This is a professional camera that takes some knowledge to understand the camera to get the best out of it. The LCD screen is good and has good colour depth and is high quality. Really solid camera. The only thing I would have liked to see would be a carry case which I know isn’t common for cameras as you usually buy your own but I don’t see why not at this price they can throw a cheaply camera case to protect your camera all you’re given here is a camera strap that protects it falling from your neck. Overall a solid camera with a good 12-60mm lens that can take some great portrait shots with fantastic quality bokeh. I would recommend..

I had almost pulled the trigger on an L-mount S1H but decided against building an entirely new system with a new mount. When the full details of the GH6 were revealed, I realized it was a mini S1H and even a bit more. I have a huge number of lenses (native m4/3 and adapted lenses using Metabones adaptors) so the decision was easy. Now, after a couple of weeks of usage, I am really pleased with the versatility and output - both stills and motion. The auto focus is a bit faster, more responsive and more accurate than the very good G9 (in single shot - I almost never use CAF). Using SilkyPix SE, the files are rich with both color information and textural detail and can be pushed significantly. I am really looking forward to a more familiar RAW importer to be able to compare old workflows with this new file format. The files write instantaneously to both cards (though the HHR and HR processing are only a tad faster than the G9) and the camera is just far snappier in every respect. As far as video, it seems like a close comparison to the GH5S. Files are clean and easily usable up to and beyond ISO 3200 (I have not tested the special dynamic range mode yet) and am really looking forward to using the camera in ProRes RAW mode when the firmware is updated to do so. More on that later....Did I mention the IBIS? It rocks! Way better than the G9 or GH5. Probably the basis of why the HHHR is so effective.

Too soon for a full review. First blush testing shows this to be the best sensor yet. The ergonomics of the camera are the same as the full frame version. I have been using a GH5 and a S1H since each first came out. Mostly shooting video, but also some still shots. I have now had the new GH6 for about a month. I have been able to test the GH6 in the snow with very harsh lighting and in non snow conditions with very good results. The GH6 improvement that benefits my production the most is the upgrade to the full V-Log over the V-Log L used in the GH5. With both my S1H and the GH6 shooting in V-Log, the footage is very closely color matched saving a lot of time in post.Another great improvement is the addition of the memory slot for the much faster CFexpress B card. The write speed of these cards allows for shooting everything from Pro Res on down without needing an external recorder. The High Res mode on the GH6 ... MoreI have been using a GH5 and a S1H since each first came out. I cannot do that with my S1H.My S1H full frame camera cannot be beat when the conditions allow the use of a heavy camera, and the GH6 cannot be beat when I need a light weight run-and-gun camera. My GH5 now has a telephoto lens on it ready to go.
I think I'm going send the GH6 back to B&H. I've been shooting weddings on the GH5 and GH5S since they came out and am very familiar with the Lumix cameras. I got the GH6 and used it for a wedding. I wish I'd done more tests ahead of time. It's not terrible, but the footage is noisy. I was mainly shooting in vlog HD 60p Long GOP (the setting I use on the GH5 and GH5S) with dynamic boost turned on, so the base ISO in this mode is 2000. I could see noise on my SmallHD monitor which I thought was weird. And then watching the footage back in Premiere, all the footage is visibly noisy. I'll be able to clean it up in Resolve, but still. For a base ISO, surely it shouldn't be visibly noisy? I tried shooting with Dynamic boost off and at the base ISO for vlog of 250 and ... MoreI think I'm going send the GH6 back to B&H. For a base ISO, surely it shouldn't be visibly noisy? I tried shooting with Dynamic boost off and at the base ISO for vlog of 250 and it's much better but still a bit noisy in the shadow compared to the GH5 or GH5s. Shooting on the GH5 in vlog-l I found the files had a lot of latitude in post, even when underexposed. Surely the GH6 using full vlog should provide a better image with more dynamic range? Also, it was all a bit soft-looking. I've since experimented with turning the in-camera sharpening up all the way and it's still a bit soft. Which makes me wonder if I just got a bad copy? It's not unusable, but with the sharpening all the way up and a sigma 18-35 with Metabones .71, it should be positively crunchy. But it wasn't. Not that I want crunchy, but I figured turning sharpness all the way up should make it super-sharp and then I could have dialed it into my liking by taking it down a bit. Also, I'm using a Rode mic going into the mic in on the camera and it's recording 4 channels of audio and I can't turn it off. I don't have the XLR adapter and 4 channel is greyed out and off in the menu system. So why is it doing this?!When I put a Voigtlander lens on (which doesn't communicate with the camera), it should ask me if I want to change the focal length for the IS system. It doesn't. I can't even set it manually. Finally, the shutter button which I use as a video record button doing run and gun work, is way too sensitive. Even turning off the half press shutter option, it's still way too sensitive.I want to love this camera, and I hope I just had a bad copy, but I'm going back to my trusty GH5 for the next wedding.
I picked up the GH6 while I anxiously wait for a G9 successor. The tech available in this camera at this price point is amazing. The build quality is exceptional. The camera feels solid and durable, albeit a little bulky. It balances well with larger lenses like the Leica 10-25 f1.7. The dials are wonderfully tactile and provide just enough resistance. This is the feature I would most like to see on a G9 successor. The motion compensation in the high-res mode is magical.Dynamic range, e.i., the ability to push and pull and under/over exposed image isn't as good as the S5, but it is good enough. It does seem to favor being over exposed rather than underexposed. The default metering mode does seem to underexpose 1-stop compared to the G9.Noise is well controlled and very comparable at high ISO to APS-C sensors likes those found on Fujifilm cameras. A little bit of post processing can clean up the noise if that's what your work requires. I find myself adding film grain to my images when they look too clean anyway, a little grain is my preference. (sample images no grain added)I'm not much of a video shooter, but I feel much more confident using this camera because of the vast array of tools and assists. The waveform is awesome to have, so is the luminance spot meter and punch-in for focus confirmation.I have no problem with the autofocus in this camera. In photo mode it is extremely fast and accurate. In video mode, it transitions nicely between subjects and tracks well for my needs. Autofocus is something that can/should always improve with new generations of cameras. As it is today, the autofocus in the GH6 is perfectly usable for me, however your needs may vary. Anyone coming from a DSLR will notice a marked improvement, that is to say, everything is relative.Overall, I am very happy I picked up this camera over the S5. The wide variety lenses available for M43 make this an affordable and complete system. The Panasonic Leica lenses are excellent with this camera. There are also a myriad of adapters and speed boosters available for those wanting to adapt older glass.
I've had the GH6 since FW 1.0 and have owned it since June 2022. I own the G9, and have worked with the EVA-1 and GH5. Before anything else is addressed, ProRes internal is the main advantage, with IBIS and the form factor/build quality coming second. Hate the limitations of a smaller sensor? Get the S5 or S1H. Need to run (literally, I've run miles strapped with my cameras) with two cameras at once in inclement conditions (110+ degree heat, condensing humidity)? Get the GH6.The G9 is a much more rounded hybrid. During the first months, I had totally given up on photo for the GH6, as the dynamic range was ABYSMAL at low ISOs, and I shot at 800 even in broad daylight. During the first months, I had totally given up on photo for the GH6, as the dynamic range was ABYSMAL at low ISOs, and I shot at 800 even in broad daylight. Panasonic needs to do a better job communicating how DR Boost works in photo mode. Recently, either because of quiet firmware tweaks or improved ACR handling, I find I can shoot at ISO 100 with only a minimal highlight clip, and FINALLY have recoverable shadow detail. 14 bit RAW is the most noticeable improvement, and at times I even prefer the GH6 now for its color depth.Originally the GH6 was prone to chroma noise across modes, but that has improved. The CMOS banding was present from the second I turned on the GH6 on FW 1.0, but is now a non-issue. Autofocus is usable, and better than most in photo. Battery life is disappointing, and keeping at least 3 for a shoot day is essential. I miss the top LCD of the G9, the battery grip support, as well as the .83x mag. Exposure is confusing, and I find myself overexposing close to 3 stops in some scenes using DR Boost. I wish Panasonic provided a bit more information to their legacy G/GH series users. What I'm waiting on is the G9 successor. Even a GX successor with a better viewfinder and sealing. The success of the S5 has undercut the MFT system. I still use it because of the PanaLeica lenses, the size-to-performance, and the ability to get flagship performance below $3K.
I started my videography career with the GH5 then I picked up a Pocket 4k for my new A cam, but anyone will tell you losing IBIS, autofocus (for stills and back button MF/AF in the video), and the overall compact nature of an SLR style camera is rough even if the image quality bump is real and in many cases worth it. Now with the GH6, I have a camera that operates as the (almost) perfect hybrid camera for videographers. I have field-tested this camera the past couple of weeks at Church Events, Music Videos, a Wedding, and a 2min short film for a class project. In all those situations I never felt slowed down by the camera and like many other reviewers have commented I actually find it fun to use. It's exhilarating being able to shoot gimbal-like DCI4k at 120p then immediately switch to 5.8k 422HQ without breaking a sweat. My only problem is in some artificial, low light, high contrast, lighting situations there is strange banding that appears across the entire image if you are underexposed or even at proper exposure. Nothing Lumix there is likely already a firmware update coming soon that will fix this and I'm more than happy to wait to make this my perfect camera.
My news agency has been using this camera significantly since March 15th. Our biggest issue is the clock. For example, we go to a championships, and each morning we set the clock exactly to the nearest second according to the atomic clock at time.gov. And then a few hours later during a fast-paced race, this camera, and only this camera, is already a full lap off from the correct time. Pictures from this camera show up totally out of order in live photo streams and have really ruined the sterling reputation of our news agency. We have had to pull this model of camera from the stream in at least three events just in the past week as a result. The autofocus for action is terrible, but we already knew that, and are using it for manually-focused high speed sports ... MoreMy news agency has been using this camera significantly since March 15th. I have had the GH6 about two weeks and have shot video and photos with it. (I had the GH5 for four years before that). The GH6 produces outstanding video and still photos. I used to shoot video in 4K-30 and 4K-60 with the GH5, but the GH6 produces even better video at that resolution and frame rate. The GH6 also supports 5.7K up to 60fps. Even if you render your video and upload it at 4K, you'll use 5.7K for those times when you want to scale up and do other editing without the video becoming pixelated. The GH6 (which is 25 megapixels) can shoot handheld stills up to 100 megapixels by combining eight images it takes very quickly. You will want to use this for special photos. I also have found the autofocus (for both video and stills) to be very good -- I know a lot of people criticized the GH5 AF, but I think the GH6 AF has improved. You should seriously consider getting the 12-60mm lens that can be ordered with the GH6. It is an excellent and affordable lens. Finally, it is frustrating that Adobe Camera Raw doesn't work with the GH6 raw files yet, but YouTube shows a work-around that lets you change those photos to very large TIFF files, and you can then use Camera Raw as a filter in Photoshop before saving them as a PSD.
