Excellent lens! I shoot with this lens as my primary because it nicely bridges the gap between an ultra wide and a medium lens like my 50mm. This is great for capturing street photography or portraits. The wide open aperture is also great for night photos which are my personal favorite to shoot. I never have to worry about not getting in enough light with this lens.

I've shot Cooke glass on Red camera systems over the course of my career, and I can honestly say that this 85mm on our S1h yields comparable results. We have two of these lenses that we use almost exclusively for interviews. We consistently get tack sharp focus wide open, with excellent subject separation, color rendering, minimal distortion, and smooth bokeh. Perhaps it's more the Lumix S cameras systems, but like the 20-60mm and, to a slightly lesser degree, the 50mm 1.8, these lenses seem custom-built for video. They deliver astonishing results when used for that purpose. They don't perform quite as well for stills work as the autofocus is still subpar compared to other manufactures. (I will say it is getting markedly better with each camera update.) Excellent lens! I shoot with this lens as my primary because it nicely bridges the gap between an ultra wide and a medium lens like my 50mm. This is great for capturing street photography or portraits. The wide open aperture is also great for night photos which are my personal favorite to shoot. I never have to worry about not getting in enough light with this lens.

Another 24mm lens ? Buy it.....

I was not excited to spend money on another 24mm lens since I have that covered 3 times already with Lumix brand zoom lenses. I ended up testing now all 4 lenses at 24mm along with the Leica f1.7 Summilux 28mm to assess the value of this purchase. Regardless of f stop, this lens was sharper than any of Panasonic zooms with the 24-70mm f2.8 closest in quality. The Leica, as expected was a hair sharper. Image rendering of the new 24mm was very close to the Leica overall feel with a hair post tweek. Out of focus areas were superior to zooms but not exactly Leica. 3 dimensional depth was much better than the zooms but again not quite Leica. Overall the lens handles great and does not disappoint in any area especially for the money. Having a lens that functions below freezing was one of my prime reasons for going with Lumix system. I am very happy with results and can easily justify the expense since this lens shoots so well at minimum focus. No real aberrations , a little fringing that immediate clears in post. The wide open sharpness and contrast is simply icing of the cake.

I bought this lens to have a relatively fast 50mm and affordable lens for my SL2. I would add that this lens is also light weight and balance well on my SL2.Wide open at f1.8 images are a little soft including in the center. Stopped down just a taste, to f2, and the center sharpens up nicely.While this lens does provide ample Bokeh, small areas such as leaves, can appear busy and choppy when viewed on-screen at 100%.Otherwise this lens, for the money, performs well. I would recommend this lens to someone using an SL2 (and probably an original SL).

I borrowed this lens from a friend of mine to see how much I would like it - TLDR, it's great and I'm waiting on mine to arrive and it'll be my go to lens for most things. I do primarily video work now, but if I were primarily a photographer again then I would probably opt for something in f/1.4 for just a little more background blur. However, with my video work, environmental context tends to be important for clients so they don't want backgrounds completely obliterated.The long version... Having come over from Sony, I was hoping this would perform close to the Sony 35mm f/1.8, and it certainly does. Also I'm excited that the other f/1.8 primes have the same dimensions and are basically the same weight. This review is my perspective from a video project with the lens on a Lumix S5 II and IIX.Focus Distance, Sharpness, Vignette, Distortion:There's a close focus distance probably inside of a foot (I didn't actually measure). The lens has very good center sharpness wide open, stopping down to f/2.8 and beyond the center sharpness is excellent. However, I rarely go beyond f/5.6 so I don't know if it suffers from diffraction if you stopped down beyond that. Wide open, the corner sharpness isn't great. However, it's not horrendous either, and personally I think it gives images/video character. There's also just a little vignette wide open, but it's not bad at all. Stop down to f/2.8 and both corner sharpness and vignette are pretty much resolved. Like other 35mm lenses, you do get a little edge distortion but the lens corrections take care of that.Bokeh & CA:As long as your subject is within 6 feet and you have depth in your shot, the background does melt away nicely. Towards the edges you do get a little cat's eye, and if you punch in a lot you might notice onion rings in some of the bokeh balls. The bokeh is very pleasing, but don't expect it to be blurred away to nothing like an f/1.4 or wider would do. If you're shooting in a high contrast environment (think open shade with strong highlights coming through the leaves) you might notice a little CA - but again you have to punch in to clearly see it and it's not all the time.Autofocus:Photo, it locks on quickly. If you have a rapidly moving subject coming straight at the camera, you might miss a couple shots. But this isn't the type of lens for that kind of action anyway.Video - I never used the S5, aside from when I would PA for my friend, so limited experience. However, on the newer bodies with PDAF - it tracks quietly, smoothly, with no focus drifting/hunting and hardly any focus breathing. In fact, to notice focus breathing, you have to be locked off on a tripod and staring at the edges, then you might notice it.Construction:The lens does feel like plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap. I would say it's on par with most of Sony's f/1.8 lenses, but it's not on par with Fujifilm's lenses. However, I also think most Fujifilm lenses are the gold standard for lens construction and value at the price point. The lens is sealed for weather giving it resistance against the elements. Personally, I did not shoot in any sort of weather, but my friend said he has been out in some light rain with no issues.

Missing parts -DO NOT buy from Best Buy's open box

Second time I purchased open-box from Best Buy. Will NEVER do it again. Bought "excellent" which means all parts should've been included, but this arrived with ONLY the lens. No caps, no hood. There are a lot of products for Best Buy returns to keep track of, but it takes 2 minutes for them to confirm what parts are supposed to be in the box (hint, it's printed right on the first page of the manual).

Image quality is good. I like that it is sharp wide open, no need to stop down to improve IQ. Very lightweight, thanks to the cheap plastic build (will it last as long as my metal lenses? Time will tell).VERY tight fit when screwing on/off the camera, much tighter than my 85mm or 20-60 lenses. Makes me nervous that I will damage the weather sealing ring, but it seems fine so far.I bought this lens hoping it would have improved autofocus performance over my other 2 L mount lenses, but no, its just as slow to focus as all the others.That being said, its a nifty 50 with good image quality for a decent price, so Ill keep it for now. Will probably trade it for the 24 or 35mm whenever they are released.

This lens is not just great for the price, it is great period. It is exceedingly sharp wide-open and has some of the most pleasing rendering I have ever seen, even when compared to Leica-Certified Lumix lenses I have owned in the past.I was worried that f1.8 would not be shallow enough for my needs, but this lens renders out of focus areas beautifully - it is always silky smooth and never busy, even when shooting in visually-dense woodland environments at a medium distance. The transitions between in-focus and out of focus areas are beautiful. Surpassed my expectations

This lens has definitely surpassed my expectations. We are a production house that has several S1, S1H, and S5s on gimbals in the field every day. I'm aware of the obvious advantages of native glass, but I did not expect this lens to outperform our adapted Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses; however, it does, by a significant margin. The autofocus performance is noticeably better than the 85mm and 20-60mm, both of which are surprisingly good. This lens is a no-brainer for video work... We don't do a lot of stills work, so I'll defer to others more knowledgeable than I on that front. In short, I'm not ready to offload my Canon glass yet... but this lens gets me one giant step closer. The autofocus performance is noticeably better than the 85mm and 20-60mm, both of which are surprisingly good. This lens is a no-brainer for video work... We don't do a lot of stills work, so I'll defer to others more knowledgeable than I on that front. In short, I'm not ready to offload my Canon glass yet... but this lens gets me one giant step closer. I will update my review once this lens has endured the rigors of being in the field for a more significant amount of time.
