Sleek and nimble, the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 is a compact short-telephoto prime designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. The 85mm focal length is ideally suited for portraiture and more selective shooting and pairs with a modestly bright f/1.8 maximum aperture that offers depth of field control while also promoting a sleek form factor. The optical design incorporates a pair of extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve high clarity and accurate color rendering. This lens is also characterized by its linear AF motor, for fast focusing performance, and its dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design to enable working in tough environmental conditions. Prime portrait-length lens is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used on APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length. Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers control over depth of field and suits working in available lighting conditions as well as promotes a compact form factor. Two extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and limit color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. Linear autofocus motor delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications. Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques. Dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design for increased protection to the elements.

50mm lens is a common lens and it reflects how humans see the world. Panasonic recent lenses are unique in a way while they have kept their build quality, lens dimension, weight and filter size are almost similar thus making it easier if decide to use a gimbal for video shooting. Quality of the above lens is very good for street photography with some creativity portrait mode on a sturdy tripod you can combine to produce sharp landscape phots. Colors out of the camera are fabulous, no need of extra post processing, you will be amazed with if you are outputting as jpgs.

I've shot Cooke glass on Red camera systems over the course of my career, and I can honestly say that this 85mm on our S1h yields comparable results. We have two of these lenses that we use almost exclusively for interviews. We consistently get tack sharp focus wide open, with excellent subject separation, color rendering, minimal distortion, and smooth bokeh. Perhaps it's more the Lumix S cameras systems, but like the 20-60mm and, to a slightly lesser degree, the 50mm 1.8, these lenses seem custom-built for video. They deliver astonishing results when used for that purpose. They don't perform quite as well for stills work as the autofocus is still subpar compared to other manufactures. (I will say it is getting markedly better with each camera update.) I bought this lens to have a relatively fast 50mm and affordable lens for my SL2. I would add that this lens is also light weight and balance well on my SL2.Wide open at f1.8 images are a little soft including in the center. Stopped down just a taste, to f2, and the center sharpens up nicely. While this lens does provide ample Bokeh, small areas such as leaves, can appear busy and choppy when viewed on-screen at 100%.Otherwise this lens, for the money, performs well. I would recommend this lens to someone using an SL2 (and probably an original SL).

Similar to the other primes in this series, we have here a very nice balance of sharpness, speed, price, and weight. Pairing perfectly with the S5, this lens delivers stunning portraits with rich colors and smooth bokeh.
So far lens is excellent... using on my Panasonic s5ii... pictures are sharp as well as the videos... 50mm is generally what the human eye sees and this lens does not disappoint it focuses very quickly, lightweight and weather sealed. Really like that all the L mount lenses use 67mm filters
This lens is amazing for the price. It produces incredible color, and is as sharp as anyone would ever need. The autofocus isn't fast but is fine for studio work. It is constructed well, feels like a pro lens and is a perfect match for the Panasonic S1 or S1R. As long as you respect this lens for its intended purpose: portraits...you can't go wrong. A truly professional, sub-$600 portrait lens...cool.
This lens is not just great for the price, it is great period. It is exceedingly sharp wide-open and has some of the most pleasing rendering I have ever seen, even when compared to Leica-Certified Lumix lenses I have owned in the past.I was worried that f1.8 would not be shallow enough for my needs, but this lens renders out of focus areas beautifully - it is always silky smooth and never busy, even when shooting in visually-dense woodland environments at a medium distance. The transitions between in-focus and out of focus areas are beautiful. I find the lens sharper than I will ever need for video AND for stills - even wide open. The auto-focus is fast and accurate, the weather sealing has already been handy on multiple occasions and the adjustable focus throw ... MoreThis lens is not just great for the price, it is great period. I have never detected any perceivable focus breathing in real-world videography. The lens is a little large with the lens hood attached but super light weight. Now I need to save up for the 35mm and the other lenses in this lineup!
I am comparing this to a Zeiss Planar f1.4 that I owned years ago and it compares very well. Colors are rich, accurate and full... sharpness 95% of Zeiss and 90% of Leica.... Bokeh is very pleasing especially at f2.8 which I deem is the sweet spot where all the elements you want in this portrait lens converge, build has a distictive quality feel that even looks good ( generally I prefer metal barrels), great balance on body, accurate auto-focus, lens optical design maximized for true facial portrait full frame or a slightly further back, exceptional in my opinion for price point, rich in artistic character with a unique 3 dimensional pop, maintains smooth skin tones yet rich contrast as a portrait lens should...... Cannot wait to see other primes that hopefully will ... MoreI am comparing this to a Zeiss Planar f1.4 that I owned years ago and it compares very well. ( they are just a bit slow releasing lenses which I can live with if the quality is there however, pros may not have the time to wait ) P.S. Compared to Lumix 50mm f1.4 this lens has the balanced portrait look and compliments the 50mm nicely.
Beautiful portrait lens!I was used to 50mm but that is a little too wide for portraits.85mm hits the sweet spot!No problem with focusing or anyting, Super sharp at 1.8.I use it with my S5 Lumix
This lens has definitely surpassed my expectations. We are a production house that has several S1, S1H, and S5s on gimbals in the field every day. I'm aware of the obvious advantages of native glass, but I did not expect this lens to outperform our adapted Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses; however, it does, by a significant margin. The autofocus performance is noticeably better than the 85mm and 20-60mm, both of which are surprisingly good. This lens is a no-brainer for video work... We don't do a lot of stills work, so I'll defer to others more knowledgeable than I on that front. In short, I'm not ready to offload my Canon glass yet... but this lens gets me one giant step closer. I will update my review once this lens has endured the rigors of being in the field for a more ... MoreThis lens has definitely surpassed my expectations.
