It offers a constant f/4 maximum aperture, maintaining consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. One aspherical element and one ultra-high refractive index element help minimize distortions and spherical aberrations, ensuring edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination. This lens also features a dual AF system with linear stepping motors, optical image stabilizer, weather-sealed construction, and a removable, rotating tripod collar. With three ED elements and one UHR element, chromatic aberrations and color fringing are greatly reduced, producing a high degree of clarity. This lens can also be used with APS-C models, providing a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.

I would not use a teleconverter on this lens unless it was a sunny day. Other than that its a fantastic lens. Not really for blurry backgrounds but you can achieve this under the right circumstance. O.I.S. and autofocus can help you out. The 70-200 f2.8 costs twice as much. If you can afford it get the 2.8, you are sacrificing some performance for the lower price of the f4. But for what it does for the price right now its hard to beat.

I rented two Panasonic L-Mount telephoto zoom lenses for my Leica SL mirrorless camera. Leica’s own zoom telephoto for the SL camera is too expensive (over $7000 new). I compared two Panasonic L-mount zoom telephoto lenses, the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO f:4 / 70-200 mm lens (serial # XU9CA101663) -- with and without a LUMIX 1.4x Teleconverter (Serial Number XU8GA101088) -- versus a LUMIX S f:4.5-5.6 / 70-300 lens that extends (pump action), but had no tripod foot, and had no serial number. The LUMIX S PRO f:4 /70-200 does not need to extend its barrel for zoom action and has a tripod foot. I took pictures of ducks, heron, and telephoto shots at Marin Lagoon Club House of distant telephone poles with each lens attached to the same SL camera. The 70-200 mm lens was about ... MoreI rented two Panasonic L-Mount telephoto zoom lenses for my Leica SL mirrorless camera. I took pictures of ducks, heron, and telephoto shots at Marin Lagoon Club House of distant telephone poles with each lens attached to the same SL camera. The 70-200 mm lens was about 1.25” longer than the 70-300 lens and was heavier. It is also more expensive ($1698) plus the teleconverter ($497.99) needed to reach 280 mm versus the 70-300mm ($1247.99).Telephoto shots of birds and distant shots of the telephone poles were noticeably sharper with the f:4 / 70-200 lens at 280 mm than the other lens at 300mm. In addition, the 70-300 mm did not have a tripod foot and could not be used with a Tele-extender. The F:4 would be the lens I would purchase. One drawback was that the LUMIX 1.4X tele-converter did not always connect the Leica SL to the telephoto lens. When I first mounted the 70-200 mm LUMIX lens plus its teleconverter to the camera, the lens would not auto-focus. I had to remount the lens to the teleconverter it clicked, showing a firm coupling between teleconverter and zoom lens. Then the autofocus worked reliably.

I've been a Leica owner/user for many years but thought that I would give the S Pro a try for my new S1R. Boy, was I impressed with the IQ at all focal lengths, as well as its quick AF, along with the benefit of its OIS. At corresponding focal lengths, this lens is as good as my Leica SL 24-90mm zoom, while at 90mm it is even sharper than the Leica. Its long end is very sharp as well. i will be looking forward to the future release of new Panasonic S Pro lenses that I will likely purchased in place of their Leica counterparts.

I like the lens, focus is quick and accurate. With that being said this lens does not have a focus limit switch like it's big brother. That is a problem when it hunts. As much as I like the focus clutch I'd rather they had put in the limit switch. That is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
Purchased this zoom lens for my SL2. It is Leica approved and works smoothly, fast focus and internal zoom , which makes it more compact. Love this lens.
The L mount allows for use of this lens as a 100-300 equivalent on the APS-C Leica CL. It is bulkier than the Leica 55-135 (90-200 equiv) that it replaced in my kit, but pairs well with the small CL body. I tried the gargantuan Leica SL 90-280 (135-400 equiv) on the CL. Images, OIS and focal length were great with that lens, but ergonomics and price were not in line with a camera like the CL that is made to be more affordable (sort of) and more portable than the Leica SL.The OIS on this lens works well, making it much more useful to shoot wildlife than the Leica 55-135, which lacks the effective focal length and OIS of this lens. This lens does not extend when zoomed out; the manual focus works well; and having f4 throughout the zoom range is nice. AF is quick and smooth. IQ looks as good as the Leica vario that I am replacing with this lens. I think it is a good compromise on size and price if you want to do some outdoor photography with the Leica CL. It feels well made. Also, Panasonic offered a Leica-like 3 year warranty at the time that I made my purchase.I deducted one star because of the non-existent documentation of how to use this lens on the CL. I think I have figured out the OIS set up by trial and error, but there are no instructions included in the box, and neither Leica nor Panasonic customer service seemed to know for sure. Leica US tried to be helpful, but had to send my question about the OIS switch to Germany, because no information had been provided to them. The Panasonic rep, contacted by B&H, said to turn off the OIS on the lens. My tests indicate that the lens switch should be on for optimal OIS. The L mount alliance is a great idea, but using equipment across multiple platforms means that there needs to be a central repository for complete and accurate customer support.
I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this lens to use on my Leica SL2 and CL. The images are sharp, bokeh is nice and autofocus works well. I dont shoot video so I cant comment on how it performs there, all I can say is that I am pleased with its performance for stills.
Fantastic lens. The packaging really doesn't matter but is excellent. As soon as the lens comes out it feels quality, very solid. Paired with the SL, wow, lightning focus, and easy switch to MF. The OIS is phenomenal. I'm a landscape and travel photographer so this lens is a very welcome addition. As I use a tripod quite a bit, the collar here is fantastic. No need to buy aftermarket. And big thanks to Panasonic/Leica team for designing a proper collar with an Arca style foot! Why doesn't anyone else do this rather than the design from the previous century? Tested the lens and it is very sharp corner to corner. Ready for hit the road!
I moved from Panasonic Lumix Micro Four Thirds equipment, using the G9, to the same sized S5 camera with a full frame sensor. This 70-200mm F4 lens replaced the outstanding 200mm f2.8. It's a very solid and well made lens that oozes quality and justifies the Leica badge. The images are sharp, full of contrast and the subject separation is outstanding. It functions superbly at F4. I also use a 1.4x teleconverter with it when I am shooting Roedeer. It's not really long enough for wildlife work but I can crop the full frame images and get much better quality than Micro Four Thirds. The lens is not light but it is much easier to carry than the F2.8 version. Excellent bit of glass.
I was going to go for the f2.8 version but I couldn’t justify the price of that lens at the moment so I ended up going for the f/4 instead. It’s lighter and basically $1,000 dollars cheaper. It’s very sharp at f/4 and the autofocus is very accurate and fast. If you need a longer focal length for the L-Mount system (I’m using the S1) I would highly recommend this lens. The build quality is excellent and I’m very happy I made this purchase.
