Pack top opening is great; quick and easy to open and close but even when fully open i felt like I wanted it to open just a little more to make it easier to put gear in and get to stuff at the bottom of the pack. Exterior zip pocket lays kind of funny when pack is half full and is kinda tight to get things in and out - could have given it slightly larger volume on top. Key fob length in exterior zip could be longer. Top of interior plastic frame protrudes slightly on left and right sides of pack and angular construction makes it a bit awkward. Its a solid simple and clean design that needs a bit more tweaking to give it 5.

The straps are perfectly padded and comfortable with a tank, the back mesh is breathable, the hip belts fit snacks, sunnies, and trash while my phone slips into the mesh side pocket with elastic to keep it secure and accessible. Ive put snow shoes in the front elastic and trekking poles in the main pocket. It holds a 2 liter bladder with ease and the hose clip on the strap keeps it from being in the way while walking. The small top pocket is perfect for keys and the smaller front pocket holds my lunch without smashing it. The rain shield is super easy to put on and take off, even without taking the whole pack off. I purchased this pack for day hiking/cross country skiing as my Patagonia Hawaiian Sling pack is just a little too small for all the daily essentials. This pack is not too big, as you typically fill all the space you have, and not too small, as you need room for water, extra layers, food, sun glass case/keys/wallet and map/compass. The mesh back and pad are quite comfortable and dried quickly from the unavoidable sweat. I like the small waist belt pockets for lip balm and a Swiss army knife and the side water bottle pockets are slanted, so you do not have to take off the pack to access. The webbing on the exterior provides secure access for an extra shell too. This is the pack I was looking for a quite a while for a recent trip to Iceland and Italy for day hikes and exploring. My Black Hole 25L was proving to be overkill since I needed to keep the overall packing to a minimum. Plenty of room for the layers I needed, but small enough to pack in my small duffle for airline check. The water bottle pockets were big enough and secure. The small pocket was great for sunglasses and snacks. The built-in rain cover is a really nice added feature. The shoulder straps were comfortable. I didn't use the hydration bladder feature, but that's another great feature. This will be a go-to pack in the future for travel and local day-hikes.
My Altvia 36l pack has worked out really well so far in its first 35 miles of hiking and backpacking. It is super comfortable and is sturdier than it looks; I packed a bear-barrel, sleeping bag, tarp and a bunch of ultralight camping gear for three days in the Adirondacks and even though it was completely stuffed I was still able to put water bottles and gear in the elastic outer pockets. And, it remained comfortable because of the adjustment capabilities and the ergonomics of the waistband and shoulder straps. Super light without a big load, able to carry a big load and I love the color! The only thing that I havent really tested is the ski bungees in the sides, they dont look like they would hold much because they are so light. Ill begin by saying that I am a huge Patagonia fan and own way too many products. I bought this backpack with the hopes of it replacing my go-to hiking backpack. I intentionally choose the 22L in order to have the hip strap. Received it today and am already initiating a return. I must be a little larger than their average customer, as the hip strap will not fasten at its longest capacity. I already called inquiring about some type of extension and sadly they do not exist. I was planning cut up an old strap and attempt to make my own extension, however the Patagonia buckles are not universal. Sadly, I must return this item. Patagonia, may I suggest offering some options for those folks who don't look like models.

I especially like the semi-rigid back panel which is corrugated to enable airflow and just stiff enough give the pack some spinal stature. The main compartment is plenty spacious, with a place for a bladder or to slip in your Surface, MacBook Air, etc. There's an opening for the bladder hose and an integrated hose clip on the chest strap. FWIW: I moved the chest strap down to its bottom-most adjustment point and that made all the difference. Perhaps the other person didn't do that. For the money, I think this crafty day pack represents real value.

My 13" laptop (with protective sleeve) fits into the back netted pocket (a water bladder would fit here too). The top pocket for keys, lip balm, wallet, etc. The water bottle pockets are great and fit a 20oz good; I can reach around and grab while wearing. In the. main compartment, I often stuff a rain coat and hat in (still, have room) and put my hot topic oven with lunch. I often strap my sandals on the exterior for the walk home. It ALL fits (w/room to spare). The chest strap is a great add-on; glad there is no bulky hip strap. Top carry handle is great. I opted for the small, I'm 5'8, 150, 49 female and it fits ... MoreI love it!
