Patagonia Black Hole 70L Duffel, Classic Navy

This large Black Hole Duffel easily swallows a week’s worth of stuff. Highly weather-resistant and stubbornly tough, it protects your gear from travel and rough handling. The main compartment opens via a zippered U-shaped lid, which has a pair of zip-closing mesh pockets on the underside for easily misplaced items like your headlamp and phone charger. A zippered exterior pocket holds all the stuff you need to access quickly. The padded bottom panel adds structure and helps cushion the load when your duffel gets the baggage-handler treatment. There are padded removable shoulder straps for a backpack carrying option, webbing handles with a snap closure and haul loops at either end that facilitate linking multiple bags. Four daisy chains let you lash additional gear to the outside. Made from 14-oz 900-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop (22% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and lined with 3.3-oz 200-denier 100% recycled polyester with a polyurethane coating. Both fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. The Black Hole Duffel 70L is fully backed by our Ironclad Guarantee and you can find it on Patagonia. com.

Such a lovely duffel bag! Very well made, the fabrics are tough and construction is solid. I have a much cheaper brand of bag in a 90L size, which was too big for all but multi-week trips and was made of a horrible stiff fabric that doesn't enjoy being creased. In comparison, the Patagonia fabric is sleek and supple, but still feels very durable. In smolder blue w/ buckwheat gold, I think this just looks incredible and really stands out from the crowd but in a subtle way.Sure, there are more fully-featured duffel bags out there. But as the name suggests, this does its job very well just like a collapsed star from which not even light can escape - I mean, a large receptacle for storing and carrying lots of kit (!). I've found the 55L one to be just perfect for weekends or whole weeks with sailing and overnight gear, or some hiking and climbing kit. The shoulder straps are pretty comfortable, not amazing and this won't ever be a proper backpack, but given the capacity it wears comfortably enough over short distances. The carry handles work fine, and I think the metal poppers that join them together are a touch classier than velcro versions on other brands. The side pocket is capacious and expands into the inside, with some careful planning while packing it can be a really useful quick-access pocket for the more useful bits and pieces like multi-tool, torch, sunglasses, notepad, mini tool kit etc. I haven't found a good use for the lid mesh pocket yet, and I would have slightly preferred it to be split into two pockets, but it would do well for separating non-bulky items that sit pretty flat (since this is the top of the bag, and the side that sits against your back when wearing it).On top of all that, and one of the overarching reasons for choosing this over other brands, is that I really like what Patagonia do and have always set out to do - leading the way in environmentally-conscious goods and activism. All this quality and ethical goodness, and it isn't even much more expensive than most other name-brand duffels of the same size!

This bag is pretty darn impressive. I have scoured the Internet looking for this kind of info on the bag to no avail, so figured I would run the test myself and share.Put your name on the E-Mail Waitlist and get you one. And it's made from recycled materials? Incredible.

It is what it is

Its a 55l duffel bag.The material is tough but pliable. It is not stretchy. Handles are very sturdy and I like the snap handle wrap (I am not a fan of velcro). The zipper pocket on front is spacious, and the stretch mesh zippered pocket inside is quite large as well. I used it as checked luggage on a two week work trip, so dress shirts/slacks/etc. I really liked the ingenious strap attachment points. I did not use it as a backpack, but as an over the shoulder duffel. I found using 1 shoulder strap crosswise over the bag to work well. When fully loaded it could be a little awkward because it is such a large bag - but it got me through several airports with any issues. So far (knock on wood) not a scratch on it. And when it was raining the bag exterior shrugged off the water without issue. The zipper is not YKK water tight but it is very heavy duty and kept out the moderate rain I encountered.I would strongly recommend it to anyone in need of a spacious duffel. I would also recommend travel cubes if you need to stay organized. When I am in need of a smaller duffel I will buy another in thats size for sure.I will be giving one as a gift this Christmas!I did have to call customer service about my shipping/delivery dates and the first person was nice but not overly helpful, however, the second person I talked with was extremely helpful and courteous and I was extremely satisfied.

Mysterious Geometry = Perfect Inside & Out
8 May 2023

The 3 dimensional Trapezoidal shape of this duffel means it packs WAY above it's rated capacity; and - oddly - the dimensions of today's 55L are greater than those of the previous 60L. But who cares? It swallows a huge amount of clothes and gear, especially if you use packing cubes. There's a video on the Internet of a guy placing this 55L into the overheads of a Lufthansa flight from Germany to Chicago then a United flight from Chicago to Hawaii. The bottom of the 55L EXACTLY matched the bottom edge of the overhead, and - yet again - that wonderful Trapezoidal shape helped the inside end of the duffel to conform to the inner curve of the overheads. Sheer genius IMO. Plus, their are so many colorways to choose from; you can either make a statement or go stealthy.

I got two of the 100 L bags last year (the navy blue with red accent and a dark turquoise with yellow accent I no longer see available). Their main purpose is long term international travel when I have bulky items that dont fit in my regular suitcase. Ive only used them twice so far but they look brand new despite being tossed around and hearing them dragged and scrape against concrete floor. Im amazed and so glad I splurged on these rather than settle for a lower quality bag. I do agree with a comment I saw that the compression straps are not as useful as they could be. They could either be external, or if internal should start at the base/floor of the bag rather than halfway up the side which makes an odd pinch point. As it is, if you lock the main compartment zipper, you still have the side zipper which opens to an internal pocket which open to the main compartment via another zipper, and there is no way to lock these to deter wandering hands. Still, very pleased with the bags.Im 5ft 4in and am able to carry this with the shoulder straps. Its awkward and I look like an ant but its doable.

Terrible! Too difficult to carry
31 December 2022

I was super excited to purchase and use the 55L black hole duffle. The reviews were mainly great and Patagonia products have always been fantastic. I love the color, the durability and the look of the bag. I did read the reviews regarding straps being an issue, but assumed the backpack option would work for me while traveling, as they have in the past with other brands. However, it really was a terrible travel experience with this bag. I used it as a carry on, and it was not packed to the brim, just a couple if changes of clothes, small toiletries bag, swimwear, book and a pair of flip flops. It was not full at all. The bag straps do not easily slide over a luggage handle either, so if I wanted to roll it on top of my larger roller bag, it slid off very easily, making rolling through a crowded airport almost impossible. And today, my back is killing me after one day of travel while trying to maneuver this unwieldy bag. I hope to return it, as no one else in my family wants to use the bag, after seeing how terrible my experience was. I will talk to customer service about a refund after they return from holiday break.

Unique & Perfect Geometry
28 April 2023

Patagonia must use a different geometry than the rest of us, because this bag packs WAY above its stated capacity. I know this for a fact, because I loaded my 71L North Face duffel to capacity then transferred the contents to my 55L Black Hole; and the Patagonia swallowed everything but still had room to spare. Maybe it's the shape that produces this phenomenon; but who cares = it WORKS! As for perfection, there's a video on the Internet, showing a man putting a fully-packed 55L Black Hole into a domestic airline overhead compartment; and Voila! The end of the Patagonia exactly matched the edge of the compartment! And if you think about it, the shape at the other end conforms to the shape of that part of the compartment, thus explaining the perfect ft at BOTH ENDS! ... MorePatagonia must use a different geometry than the rest of us, because this bag packs WAY above its stated capacity. You needn't be, but if you are concerned about the bag being rejected by the Gate Agent, then buy it in an unobtrusive color that doesn't attract attention, like Black or Pitch Blue. Personally, I like this year's Lago Blue; and so does my wife.

Works as a Carry On!
21 November 2022

I bought this bag several months ago and held off writing a review until I'd used it a few times. The main thing I wanted to know when I purchased the 55L (since I already had the 70L) was whether it would qualify as a carry-on bag at the airport. Good news - it does! You're going to have this on your back in line at security, and you'll be looking around at everyone else's bag thinking: Surely my bag is much bigger than all these standard roller bags. Am I fooling myself? Did the lady reviewing this bag lie to me? You'll get to the security belt and it will *barely* fit into the tray some airports make you put it in. You'll panic slightly, like I did the first two times I traveled with it.I have traveled both Delta and Southwest with this bag and was able to fit ... MoreI bought this bag several months ago and held off writing a review until I'd used it a few times. Am I fooling myself? Did the lady reviewing this bag lie to me? You'll get to the security belt and it will *barely* fit into the tray some airports make you put it in. You'll panic slightly, like I did the first two times I traveled with it.I have traveled both Delta and Southwest with this bag and was able to fit it in the overhead compartment on all the planes. On some planes (737-800 and 737-MAX8) the bag slides in skinny side/handle-side out as shown in my picture, and on others (737-700) I had to turn it sideways with the longer side facing out. Bottom line - it fit and I didn't have to check it.This bag is comfortable to wear even if you have a long walk through the airport and fits a ton of stuff. The only downside for me when comparing this bag to a traditional roller bag is that when I'm carrying this bag on my back, I have to carry my backpack over one shoulder.

a little disappointed at the functionality

There's only 3 organizational pockets and one is the storage stuff sack which flops because it's not sewn down in all directions. The storage stuff pocket is accessible from inside and outside the bag (it's the zipper shown on the outside). It's also the only zippered pocket on the outside of the bag. I would prefer if there was an additional pocket such as for shoe storage. It's also incredibly hard to refold and get the bag back into the stuff storage pocket. I also had to look at pictures for how to attach the backpack straps since it's non-intuitive. At first I thought I was missing pieces. There's also no crossbody shoulder strap included and the backpack straps are too short to use as one so I had to buy one on amazon. For such an expensive bag, you shouldn't ... MoreThere's only 3 organizational pockets and one is the storage stuff sack which flops because it's not sewn down in all directions. For such an expensive bag, you shouldn't have to buy additional straps. I use a separate backpack as a carry-on (this 70L is too big to be a carry-on), so using this as a backpack in the airport as well is not possible for me as I need my hands-free for passport/tickets/phone, so I use the shoulder strap I bought for that purpose. There's also no external compression straps which most bags this size have by other brands.(I wish the larger version with wheels had more colors available because I would have bought that instead, but I like bright colorful bags for traveling to identify mine easily.)
