I have the older non-hoody version of the down sweater and I wanted a hoody version. I read the reviews of the new design and had some concerns, but decided to see for myself. The material is very soft and I prefer the pocket placement and design of the new design. I also like the sleeve and cuff design, I like how it sits slightly lower on my hand, which helps to keep them warm. It feels very comfortable, and I like that it's not tight. If it's truly cold, I'll wear gloves which will close the gap.The fit is indeed larger, but I'm sure it's intended for layering. However, when zipped up, the chest area is boxy. I have really loved and constantly worn my previous version of this jacket without a hood for years and finally decided to spend the money on a hooded version. Unfortunately nothing that I loved about my old jacket has survived this horrible redesign. While the earlier version was great as a middle layer or outer layer, this jacket is far too stiff and bulky to work as a middle layer for me. The earlier version packed down to near nothing, while this version is bulky and heavy both to wear and to carry. They have essentially discontinued the old jacket and introduced a new jacket under the same name, but they are not at all the same. I really wish they had just said they were discontinuing the old jacketso I could've bought it when it was still available. I'm ... The fit is perfect. Not too tight, not too lose. It sits just a tad below the hips, so not too long and not too short. The sleeve length is perfect. And the elastic wrist cuffs have room for gloves but also not to loose or baggy. Definitely a jacket that I can hike in and move around in for indoor and outside adventures. The material feels thin but reports say it durable. But I am staying cautious and not using it for climbing or adventures that it might snag a sharp edge or thorn bushes. Itslight and warm. Its super comfortable! It has all the features you are looking for. I narrowed my selections down to this jacket and the Arcteryx Cerium. So warm and wind resistant for its weight. Hood fits great - with or without a hat and fits nicely around my neck. Zippers work smoothly and the pockets are beautifully sized for anything I need to carry. I have a slight sizing problem as I am somewhere between a medium and large - so I sized up to a large which makes the length perfect for me but leaves a bit too much airspace inside the jacket for my skinny frame to heat up when first walking out into the cold. After 5 minutes or so I generate enough body heat that its not a problem. I also own a Nanopuff hoody (for warmer days, wet weather and to use as an under layer under my DAS parka - making me invincibly warm). Patagonia has provided one of the only ethically sourced down items I know of. That combined with their commitment to fair labor practices and the kind of quality that lasts a lifetime makes this a very satisfying item to own and wear. I confess, I look forward to putting it on every morning.Altogether- its a great piece and well worth the money - like most Patagonia products
I had my last down sweater for 10 years, wore it on three different continents and on countless climbing, hiking, skiing, running, biking and traveling adventures. It was my go to for everything including the casual hangout. When it finally started to kick the bucket I thought I could just get the same thing again for another decade without having to try anything new because my size is hard to find, but the new design killed that idea. After wearing this jacket for a winter season I have concluded that everything I loved about it is gone. The fit is too slim and too short, almost like a women's fit. I have a climber's build so slim at the waste but a little broader in the lats and shoulders and I feel cramped and can't easily raise my arms without it uncomfortably ... After wearing this jacket for a winter season I have concluded that everything I loved about it is gone. The fit is too slim and too short, almost like a women's fit. I have a climber's build so slim at the waste but a little broader in the lats and shoulders and I feel cramped and can't easily raise my arms without it uncomfortably constricting and letting in a bad belly draft. I'd go a size up but then the arms would be too long. They are already a bit long and without the elastic at the ends the cuffs get in the way...they keep getting in my oatmeal. When zipped up the neck is too tight and the hood is bunched up in the back. Even when the hood is on it's tight and squashes your face. There's no comfortable way to have it zipped all the way up so you have to leave it splayed open and in the way. Oh, and the hood is tiny, definitely not helmet compatible so wearing a shell over with a helmet is annoying because there's just this bunch in your neck. It feels like this jacket was designed to personal preference/ proportions without experience and it bums me out. Please, please bring back something closer to the classic style. In the mean time I'm looking for something else and lamenting my loss.
I just bought this jacket last week so I can’t speak on long term durability but so far I’m satisfied with my purchase. Are there lighter, warmer, and more compressible options out there? Yes, but I chose Patagonia because I like what they stand for as a brand and with this Down Sweater Hoody I feel like they have a solid product that meets my needs. I reached out to Patagonia as I read in a few places the amount of fill has been increased this year which they did confirm is roughly 150 grams on my size large and I have to say it’s extremely warm even with just a T-shirt underneath. I can’t compare to the previous models due to this being my first down jacket from them but I would feel comfortable taking it down to the upper teens lower twenties without needing to ... I can’t compare to the previous models due to this being my first down jacket from them but I would feel comfortable taking it down to the upper teens lower twenties without needing to layer too much as long as it wasn’t too windy or wet out. The only downside I’ve come across so far wood be that the sleeves are a little too long for 5 star comfort. A minor gripe for how happy I am with the jacket so far given that they do stay in place around my wrist and don’t slide down over my hand. Time will tell to see if the jacket holds up long term but with Patagonia’s reputation in standing behind their products and lifetime warranty I’d say I’m confident in my purchase.
I own one of the older models of the Patagonia down sweater and have always wanted to get one with a hood for days where the hood would come in handy.Scooped up this down sweater hoody and was pleasantly surprised by a few updates/changes:- hem length seems just a hair shorter. This is much better for me as I have a shorter torso and I really like the way this fits- really feels warmer w/ the update. Could be just that its new, but its definitely warmer than my old jacket.- the material seems slightly more durable as advertised. Still not a super durable jacket obviously, but slightly less worried about wearing it while doing chores outside or in active situations.Updates/changes that have really boggled my mind and caused quite a bit of frustration:- no ... Still not a super durable jacket obviously, but slightly less worried about wearing it while doing chores outside or in active situations.Updates/changes that have really boggled my mind and caused quite a bit of frustration:- no elasticity around the cuffs. This makes no sense and its really distracting and very unpleasant. The jacket is warmer, but if there is any wind its going straight up your sleeve. I almost returned the jacket based on how distracting this feature is.- no liner around the neck. My wife has the previous model down sweater hoody and hers has this really soft material on the inside where the jacket meets your face.Overall Id still recommend this jacket. I hope the next version sees a return of some of the old features.
I got this jacket in anticipation of an upcoming backpacking trip. I was looking for a lightweight, stowable, warm outer layer. I was between this jacket and the Patagonia Micro Puff Hoodie which is in the same price range but it's synthetic and lighter weight. After trying both on, I much preferred the fit and feel of the Down Sweater Hoodie. It was noticeably heavier (still super lightweight for backpacking) but also noticeably warmer. It's also sized really well in that when I wear it with just a t-shirt underneath it doesn't look baggy, and when I'm wearing it with a fleece underneath it doesn't look stuffed -- can very easily be layered without having to size up.I do still enjoy the warmth, fit, and feel of this jacket. It doesn't restrict my mobility at all, and doesn't ride up when I lift my arms. The hood fits great and stays put, and this jacket stops the wind like nothing else I've owned. Also it doesn't make any obnoxious whooshing noises that some jackets tend to make when walking. All that being said, I haven't put too much use into this jacket yet, but I'm noticing that it is really delicate -- which is not something I want for my active outer layer. I'm always finding feathers poking out from the seams or getting pulled through the fabric. I know losing feathers on a new down jacket is normal, but I wasn't expecting to see this many on such an expensive jacket.Ultimately, I think this is a fine jacket, but not for it's price. If you can get it on sale for less than $200, I'd probably say it's worth it, but for the full retail price of ~$330, I would expect more durability. I haven't decided if I will keep or return yet.
Light and packable with still a decent amount of warmth. Works well as a fall/spring stand alone or as part of layering system for the cooler months. Fit is well cut and not boxy, maybe slightly trim.Counter to the other review about the lightness of the outer fabric - that's the point. This is primarily designed as a mid layer, and will find it's best home under an external hard or soft shell. The light fabric keeps it packable. I don't know of too many mid layers that will resist fire embers, let alone hardshells - synthetics and fire don't mix and a thicker fabric isn't likely to help much. I've used mine around many-a campfire with no issue, but you do have to be conscious of it. You can't fault a product/fabric for something that is outside its use or it ... I'm glad they finally made this year's version WARMER because previous versions were exactly what the name says, "sweater"....😉 The cut and finish of the jacket are ALL the same. Thank you to Patagonia for including a nylon patch kit inside the inner pocket which will gladly come in handy for little tears and snags.I love that the collar zips up around your neck and that the hood has excellent and hassle-free coverage and adjustability.Pockets are nice and roomy. I find the inner zippered pocket comes in handy for keys, money or anything else you wanna keep safe. This jacket is warmer and should be good for temps down to the mid 30's.The only thing I didn't like was the fit of the mid to lower arms around my elbow felt noticeably tight.
