2022 update Feels like a warm hug . Runs small

I am an avid bird watcher and always lifting binoculars up to my eyes, and this movement was constructed in XL.The XXL is a bit big on me and baggy in the back and chest, but I needed the larger size to fit my hip area and also so the shoulders arent as tight.I am using this down sweater solely as a mid-layer so it doesnt matter to me that the XXL isnt as fitted looking. The XXL was warmer than the XL, too, prob bc larger size capturing more air to warm. I wouldnt want to wear this as an outer layer anyway, wind blows right through it.But when worn under another jacket/shell, this down sweater is so so cozy. It is now my warmest coziest mid-layer piece. Worn over a Smartwool marino top, and under a Marmot Avant jacket, I was toasty warm in Central Oregon high desert temps 5-20 F, and had to unzip most of my layers as approaching 20 and above midday when sun out. The day before getting the down sweater I wore the same outfit but with a thick handmade wool sweater from Ireland as the midlayer, in 5 F, and I was okay, not cold but also not warm, not feeling warm cozy like sun glowing filling me up. All days long with the down sweater felt like I was wearing a warm hug; core so warm and hugged, like wearing a heating pad! My partner wore it a while and agrees its like wearing a warm hug, and told me to write in Review that this would be a great jacket for people who dont get enough Connection/touch and feel lonely, bc it will continuously hug you! It feels good emotionally to wear it!However, worn over Smartwool and under a Arcturyx rain jacket in raining 40-50 F on Oregon coast, it isnt warm enough, prob dampness in humid air might be getting into the down sweater and compromising its insulating abilities, even though no rain wet it. So not a jacket for PNW rainy westside.I bought the new updated 2022 version made with fishing nets nylon. I never owned the previous polyester version (which is still being sold in stores, so check the tag if yours has fishing net material nylon is the 2022 update). Bend REI store had the new 2022 update, even though the REI website says that they’re still selling the older polyester version. The new version is silky soft material, it feels wonderful to touch.Supposedly the update made it warmer, too.But the waist area is tight if you have hips (though it does have a drawcord at hip which is incomprehensible to me Why if theyre putting a means to tighten the hip, why dont they make the hip wider for the majority of women who have wider hips than waists? since narrower women would still be able to cinch it)? Wish theyd rethink this.People mention the long arms, and it does have very long arms, and they cant be pulled up to the elbow bc the elastic at wrist is too weak and doesnt stretch enough; this makes the jacket unwearable inside the house, and I wish theyd fix the elastic so that the sleeves could be pushed up the elbows and stay; but Im okay w length bc got it for outdoors, and love that my hands can tuck into the long sleeves and be kept warm from the down, so I prefer them long; and when wearing this sweater as a mid-layer under another jacket, the arms crunch up inside the shell mostly at the wrist, so the extra down at the wrist then keeps my hands warmer too. Im very glad this new version has extra long arms.Note: I also tried on the 2022 nano puff hoody in Cloudberry Orange the same day as this down sweater; nano puff fit great in size XL with plenty of room, but had so much extra midsection room that it looked bad on me, not flattering at all. Even though the down sweater is an XXL and still too large on my midsection, the cut is a lot more flattering than the nano puff. Unfortunately, Patagonia womens jackets arent cut for broader hips or shoulders. Wish that could be changed, since women without curvier hips and shoulders could easily wear the mens products.

I have a down sweater that is at least 10 years old and I am thrilled with everything about the upgrades. The recycled outer is incredibility soft and the jacket is so much warmer than my old one. I was really worried about the fit as so many folks are complaining how small it is. I chatted with a Patagonia rep online and they gave me the actual jacket measurements I requested so I knew just what size to order. Maybe my hips are smaller than I thought because I feel the jacket is quite roomy in the hips (to be fair, I have a large chest so I have to buy to fit that and then deal with everything else so I am just tightening up the bottom and calling it good). As for the black, it is lighter than my other black Patagonia jackets but nothing I would think to complain ... MoreI have a down sweater that is at least 10 years old and I am thrilled with everything about the upgrades. Before ordering I read some unhappy reviews about the length of the arms being too long and the jacket being tight around the hips and not for a real woman. But thats my body type! Also a real woman :) I do find the arms a bit longer than other Patagonia jackets I have tried, which made it work better for me as I sometimes find the arms too short. The arms fit well on this for me. I find this super cozy, surprisingly warm, and I am generally a person who gets very cold. Love the high neck. It works well for me and adds to the coziness. Everyone is different but I wear this with a thin fleece underneath to walk and have been comfortable down to high 20 degrees F. Below mid 20s I would likely wear either a higher fill down or a shell with it. Love it.

I originally ordered a size small, thats what size I wear in the nano puff. The down sweater hoodie is slightly longer however, so I had to size up so it wouldnt fit tight around my hips. The size small also fit snug around the chest. Had this of not been a down type jacket, the fit would be fine, but to benefit from the warmth, I sized up allowing the jacket to be comfortably loose. The material is soft and comfortable. Its perfect for PNW 35-65F temps. The hood tucks nicely around your neck when you have the jacket zipped all the way up, and arent utilizing the hood. Quality is not what it used to be

THE BAD: I've been hesitant to write a review because I purchased my coats so long ago (winter 2018). I actually bought two of this same coat because a friend shared her Friends & Family discount with me. So I bought one to wear and I saved one for future use. During the cold season, I wore my coat daily to run errands or go on walks. The outer material has been horrible because literally everything rips a little hole in the coat. At first, it wasn't a big deal for me - I would just cut a bit of tuck tape and cover the hole. Eventually, small holes (and a few big holes) have formed all over this coat; it literally pukes feathers....to the point that the tuck tape or patches are now pointless. Eventually, small holes (and a few big holes) have formed all over this coat; it literally pukes feathers....to the point that the tuck tape or patches are now pointless. There is a seam that runs along the bottom of each arm sleeve - both sides of my coat have holes along this entire seam (I think the zippers from the pockets rip little micro holes in the sleeves). This jacket is pretty much ready for the trash; I can't even really wear it on dog walks anymore because so many feathers come out. So this winter, I got out my nice "new" coat that I've kept stored...I've worn it less than 2 months, and it's already getting small holes in it. The outer material of these coats is literally the worst. I have a Patagonia down sweater coat from like 2012 and it's in 100% better condition than either one of the 2 coats I have now. In my 2012 coat, I've climbed, biked, camped etc and it doesn't have any holes. In my more recent coats, I have to be SO careful in them (no activities; it's a town coat only) and they still tear. Now, my "new" coat that I got out of storage is going to be my dog walking coat and I have to shop for a more durable puffy that won't tear so easily.....and sadly, I won't be buying the down sweater hoody anymore. Maybe these coats from 2018 were just a bad batch. But I no longer feel confident buying one of these coats from Patagonia. The material Patagonia used to use holds up WAY BETTER than this newer stuff. On a positive note, this coat has been so light weight and packs down super small, yet it is so warm. It's very easy to travel with & the fit was flattering too. I live in a cold climate and this coat has always kept me warm enough. This is why I'm sad the quality has changed and now I have to find a different option. :(

Significant fit issues
24 December 2022

The fit is so off with this jacket it's almost offensive. I'm between a Small and Medium depending on the product, and since I wanted to layer under this jacket, I went up to a Medium. The jacket is comfortably/appropriately roomy up top, but then things get really weird as you go down. It's suuuper long in the arms (they hit at my fingertips), and real snug around the hips such that there's no chance I'm comfortably layering under this thing. I'm petite and in shape with a super normal hourglass body type, so if the fit is this weird for me, I can't imagine this fitting comfortably for most other estrogen'd folks out there. Definitely not an inclusive fit for body shapes that aren't straight. Also, the Black color looks more like Navy Blue which was another fun ... MoreThe fit is so off with this jacket it's almost offensive. Too tight around the hips
13 February 2023

Although I am a big Patagonia fan, I sadly had to return this one. This year's newer model doesn't fit as it should be in my opinion. It is way too tight around the hips area; it really seems the jacket was made for women's without hips. I manage to put all the layers I need, however everything bunches in the back in an unflattering way . I also own a Patagonia Down Sweater 2018 version (without the hood) in size small, which fits way better around the hips area and there is no questions about it! For reference, I bought this year's model in size medium, I am 5'4'' and 137 lbs. The size small for this newer version wouldn't have fit at all. I thought about going for a Large, but it would be way too large around the shoulder area and the sleeves would be way too long ... MoreAlthough I am a big Patagonia fan, I sadly had to return this one. Please make adjustments for this jacket, I'll be the first one to try it out when it comes out.

Updated cut is a perfect fit for me
24 October 2022

I’m tall and lean and have wanted this jacket for a long time but the previous cut just didn’t fit me right. I usually have to buy the dead bird brand to get stuff that fits my long torso and narrow waist- but then the arms will be too short. Everyone in comments on this jacket was complaining that the arms were too long on this update so I was excited to try this on. It fits great! I think, based on a friend trying mine on, that this version may also run more narrow in this hips. I will say it’s easier to get the arms taken up by a seamstress than to add length. It’s an awesome jacket- great over layers, super warm and windproof. Honestly sad I counldnt have had it for yearS already! Yes, it’s not waterproof- you wear a hard shell if it rains or if you want to take ... MoreI’m tall and lean and have wanted this jacket for a long time but the previous cut just didn’t fit me right. Warm and roomy

It was time to finally commit to a hooded jacket, I've had the same hoodless version of this for 12 years and needed an upgrade. My partner has a 2 years old version of this the jacket, I wear it all the time so I finally decided to get it for myself. Im normally an XS in all other patagonia products, but sized up to be able to layer. I like the design and cut in the chest and shoulders. The pockets on the inside and exterior are generous. I LOVE the elastic on the hood, give a great fit when its windy. I got black, but when comparing to my partners jacket it looks a little more like a dark blue/black but I like it. The only thing I wish they would have kept is the fleece inside the collar for when you have it zipped up. VERY warm, been wearing it in this really ... MoreIt was time to finally commit to a hooded jacket, I've had the same hoodless version of this for 12 years and needed an upgrade.
