I've had the fortune of exisiting on this planet for over 25 years, and I seriously have to say this is one of the most durable jackets I've ever owned. I was honestly hesitant to buy it at first because of how lightweight + on the thinner side it is...but I've come to learn that it can take a legit beating. I slid/rolled down a rather rocky slope the other day (it genuinely felt like I was a protein ball being tossed around in a bowl of very sharp desiccated coconut), and despite me coming out more bruised than a 2 week old banana...the Houdini jacket was as good as new!?In terms of performance, it's pretty good at blocking out the wind and can shield you from a bit of rain. I'd recommend sizing up if you intend on wearing multiple layers underneath it. The jacket also has drawcords at the base/hem so you can always adjust the "seal" depending on how many layers you're wearing. Also the jacket has only one pocket which is in the chest area, which CAN fit a small wallet or keys but I'd recommend not putting anything heavy there because it'll feel a bit awkward. Overall it's a pretty versatile jacket which you can use in warm or cold condition. I highly recommend it :)

Took this jacket to Patagonia and it performed great as a windbreaker and to fend off light rain but it could not handle the unexpected weather in Chilean Patagonia. I was caught in an unexpected rainstorm and after about 30 minutes, water started to seep in from all over and I still had 5 miles left to get to the next campsite. Even before the rainstorm, when I was hiking up a mountain (the day same day) there was light rain and after about an hour I felt moisture in the hood. The rest of the jacket performed well. I will say, however, that when the rainstorm passed the jacket dried off rather quickly though it was unfortunate that during the rainstorm it got wet considering the price of the jacket. I have a Hollister rainjacket that was under $100 that performed ... MoreTook this jacket to Patagonia and it performed great as a windbreaker and to fend off light rain but it could not handle the unexpected weather in Chilean Patagonia. Had some help from the Boulder store replacing a failed Stretch Rainshadow (thank you Patagonia!). I've had this shell now for almost 2 months and it is simply amazing. Rain, sleet, hail, snow and wind ripped ridges are no match so it does its main job well. What I really like is that it is a tough 3 layer but yet found a way to balance some softness making it comfortable to wear all day. I find I don't need to take it off which is really saying something for an alpine shell. It's got great lines and works as well running errands as on the trail. But I've found it's so nice and tough it's become my go to for everything except actual alpine skiing. On top of that, saw some fishing nets tangled in trees in AK and all I could think was how much this company is doing to ... MoreHad some help from the Boulder store replacing a failed Stretch Rainshadow (thank you Patagonia!). I couldn't believe this piece when I first got it. A year later I never go anywhere without it! Its essentially an ultralight high tech trash bag but its uses are endless. I hate wind on my neck and arms so wearing this warms me up instantly even with a tee under it in cold temps. I use it for casual biking, trail running, hiking and walking the dogs. A cap cool long sleeve under it solves the sticking to skin issue.I am 36-28-40 body stats and medium fits close but not tight- a little snug at the hips. If I layered more under it I'd go with a large.
After comparing this with a Columbia Whirlibird 4, I opted to keep this as the jacket to replace my well-worn Patagonia Down Sweater. I was looking for a synthetically-insulated jacket for temps from the 30s to upper-50s, having grown tired of my Down Sweater leaking feathers from the cuffs and elsewhere.I have been wearing this jacket non-stop for two weeks now and I’m quite happy with it. The shell is very water-repellent, the insulation is more than sufficient, construction quality is good, and the jacket looks quite nice. Any complaints would be minor but would include the absence of a two-way zipper [what was Patagonia thinking not including this, especially at this price point?] and non-stowable/-removable hood.Overall, would definitely recommend.
Don't get me wrong, this jacket is great. But at $130 more than the Torrentshell 3L, you really have to be committed to helping the environment. From what I can tell, and from what I was told by a Patagonia expert, the only difference between this and the Torrentshell 3L, is the Granite Crest jacket is made with NetPlus®, which is Patagonia's 100% post-consumer recycled nylon ripstop made from recycled fishing nets. I love the fact that Patagonia is 100% committed to saving our planet, but the cost for this jacket is a little prohibitive. The fit is great; it's completely waterproof, and the hood will easily cover a helmet. The arm vents are great for a little extra breathability, and overall, it's a great jacket. I just wish it wasn't so pricey.
The houdini jacket is truly magical. At first it seems a like a silly non-jacket but then you realize its a secret weapon on chilly, wet, windy and in-between days. It's the perfect layer for over a t-shirt or thin long sleeves, keeps you warm, never gets too hot and wraps well around the waist. As a runner I have a few suggestions for the next version though...make a version without the hood (it drags during a run), keep the pocket and add sleeves that show a running watch when down and easily scrunch up when you warm up. The only annoying thing about this jacket is it's hard to roll up the sleeves as you move and to get them to stay up, probably because they are tight for wind-blocking but I think this could be improved--maybe with snaps? Had this jacket for a year now, and it is my absolute favourite jacket for running and cycling when it’s misty or drizzle. It is so breathable and thin it feels like you don’t even have a jacket on. It feels nice against the skin, I can wear it with a tank top or T shirt just to keep the chill off when there is some rain while being really active. It’s very good as a windbreaker. It’s not designed to be waterproof, and that’s why I bought it, it’s That ideal balance of breathable but some water protection and wind protection. It packs down tiny into the chest pocket to fit in a belt bag or clip to the bike. I was worried it would tear quickly, as it feels and looks tissue paper thin. But it is not fragile ! it’s survived mtb all year round, winds up shoved in the back or the truck, tramped on by kids, and it keeps going. I sized up, I’m always a small in Patagonia and went with the medium and no regrets, it’s not baggy but has room in the shoulder. Oh and the hood is fantastic under a bike helmet, has a toggle at the back to angle the hood away from your vision. The cuffs are baggy, which I like cause I can easily slide it up to check my garmin while moving, but that could be be a downside for some. 10/10 would recommend this jacket
Great cover that keeps the warmth in sufficiently and takes up no space. I got the purple patterned one and love it, it goes with everything. I'm usually a size small and likes a fitted look, but this one runs pretty small. I sized up to a medium and just tightened the elastic at the bottom. I was so impressed I bought one for my mom as well, this fits into a tiny purse and gives instant protection from wind and light drizzle. Great for anyone living in unpredictable weather. My only complaint is that there should be pockets. Where can I put my phone, wallet, and airpods when I'm out and about? I would have gladly paid with a bit less compression if I could store some stuff or stick my hands inside some pockets.
First off, I want to thank patagonia for making their tops/jackets long enough to give some bum coverage, good length in the arms, and give in the shoulder/back so they are actually comfortable to wear and functional to move around in. I will be a Patagonia buyer for life for these reasons. The houdini is a garment I never thought I would buy (I had seen them on shelves, but thought I would never wear it) fast forward a few years later, it was reviewed favorable by many so I took the plunge and now it is one of my favorite pieces. Just get it, you'll love it. Its great for the "shoulder" seasons and when you're not sure if you want to wear a t-shirt or long sleeve, or when it is a little chilly in the morning but will warm up significantly later in the day.
