The Down SWEATER is a LIGHTWEIGHT down jacket so it will NOT keep you warm if you wear it on top on COLD, windy days esp. when the temps drop into the mid-to-low 30s F (Freezing point is 32F). THAT is when you really need to wear a REAL THICK down jacket. I have both the TNF Hooded down 700 fill parka for cold temps and it IS warm and the TNF McMurdo jacket when it really gets Freezing cold! Otherwise, the jacket is nice, Fashionable yet PRICEY. It can be worn as an outer jacket but ONLY when it's warm Enough when the temps are at least in the 40s with Appropriate winter clothes.

Great warmth, not very durableI’ve had this jacket for about two and a half years. I’ve worn it significantly while backpacking, skiing, hiking, and at work (I work for the US Forest Service) in a variety of conditions. It is incredibly warm and comfortable and packs up to an easily packable size (I call it my “oh s**t” jacket because it serves as my ace in the hole along with a wool beanie that I can throw on at the top of an accent in nasty weather). It breathes surprisingly well and still seems to insulate to a fair degree more than other down products I’ve had when it gets wet. When I wear it under my torrentshell, it’s bomber. If I had to get it again, I would definitely get it with the hood however. My big complaint: it started to wear out super fast. From the beginning I was having to pull feathers back into the coat. it soon developed holes in the lower sleeves around the forearm and wrist, eventually extending halfway up the arm to the elbow. I’ve been on top of it with tenacious tape, but the problem still grows. The next area to develop holes was along the waist cuff, especially where the draw string bunches the fabric. I would gladly add a few ounces of weight for a more durable product. Unless you are just planning on wearing this jacket to go shopping at Whole Foods and attend mountain film festival showings, I would expect it to wear out fast.

I was looking for a mid weight jacket for cool days and this one fit the bill. I like Patagonias ethos and transparent production methods. This one fits a little bigger than equivalent brands but the waist elastic can be adjusted for a more tapered fit. My jacket smelled of fish/wet dog when it arrived though. A quick google showed several comments about this. I reached out to customer service and they explained it was the DWR finish and it should go away (which it mostly has). They offered to replace it if I wasn't happy which was nice. Since it's mostly gone now I'm not too bothered but it's worth mentioning. A good jacket otherwise and decent value on sale.

Great all around jacket for a Minnesota winter.
11 January 2017

I bought this jacket two months ago at the beginning of winter up here in Duluth,Minnesota. So far the jacket is outstanding for everyday use. It keeps me warm when commuting to and from work, shopping, etc. The warmth for something so light is incredible. However,I would suggest either buying a warmer jacket or using a shell for those days when temps hit -10 fahrenheit or below. For running errands or going from the garage to the truck and then into work it is great but for any outdoor standing or light walking the jacket is a little light for temps 10 below zero or lower. That being said, for running or fat biking in the cold the jacket provides great protection while being lightweight. That being said, for running or fat biking in the cold the jacket provides great protection while being lightweight. If you are looking for a great everyday jacket for winter in Minnesota I would say go for it. Keep in mind I usually wear multiple layers to work,t shirt, dress shirt, and a light sweater, dressing in this manner is a matter of habit in the winter up here and the jacket is perfect for this layering. Even for casual wear I always have a sweatshirt or light fleece on during the winter and this jacket is perfect for this type of dress. If you plan on only wearing a tshirt with this jacket below zero you would be chilly. Obviously this jacket is not a waterproof shell but it does repeal snow, even melting snow, and it does offer some wind resistance. As far as size; I am 5'9" 175 with an athletic, but lean, build. I was right between a medium and large. I chose to go with the large because I wanted to wear this jacket with sweaters, sweatshirts and other heavy layers. If you want to wear this jacket as a layer or with only a t-shirt or thermal under it then I would go with a medium. If you plan to use it as an everyday go to jacket then I would suggest upsizing to accommodate heavier clothing. The medium was roomy through the shoulders but tight in the core and waste with was not conducive to wearing heavier layers.Overall this is a great jacket, the quality is sensational. I get compliments everytime I wear this jacket. I highly recommend it.

I own the discontinued Tasmanian Teal colour of the Down Sweater. It's warm, light and very comfortable, but extremely prone to holes in the fabric. I've not worn the Down Sweater jacket in the outdoors because I prefer the ease of washing the synthetic jackets. Ive mostly worn it during winter and the colder shoulder seasons to and from work, and at home at my desk to avoid using the heater. My jacket has surprisingly quickly formed a large hole under the wrists, has formed other minor small holes on the arms, and has been leaking feathers at the seam mid way up the right arm. The only abrasion this jacket has seen is from my desk and wearing a bag, which is disappointing for a fairly expensive down jacket from an outdoors brand. If you are thinking about getting a ... MoreI own the discontinued Tasmanian Teal colour of the Down Sweater. My Nano puff which i consistently wear outdoors, and to and from work (before getting the Down Sweater), is faring much better and is a few years older. Albeit subjectively, the Nano Puff feels just as warm likely thanks to the box stitch which better manages the fill from moving around, and is much cheaper.Sorry Patagonia, in my experience, this is not a great jacket when it comes to longevity.

Really Great!

I really like this jacket! It's super lightweight, amazingly warm, and looks stylish (Forge Gray). I love just wearing a just a t-shirt and throwing this on in cold weather, I've been doing that way too often now. It's waterproof but only with light rain, my only wish is it was like its nano and micro but that is to be expected with actual feathers. I have had a few feathers come out of the jacket but that's expected with any down jacket. I find if you put heavy items like a phone or wallet in the chest pocket it pulls down the jacket when you're unzipped but again that's fine because of how lightweight it is. When you're fully zipped this doesn't happen. It's probably the best and most classy looking down jacket out Patagonia's entire range, the most 'normal ... MoreI really like this jacket! Actually it's probably one of the best down jackets I've ever seen/tried from any brand! The nano and micro are waterproof though which is something you should consider, those are more packable and lighter too though this is definitely the thickest (but it's still thin) and is the most suitable for actually wearing out and using as a outfit jacket. I also run regularly but don't see myself using this while running, I've heard the nano and micro ones are best suited for those things. It is still really breathable, like compared to other cheaper down jackets I've owned this one has blown me away, when I first got it I thought that it wasn't insulating properly but actually it wasn't making me overheat like other ones have at many varied temperatures.I've been wearing this nonstop and love it. I see myself using this for a very very long time. I mean the lifetime warranty policy is there for me anyway which gives me even more confidence. Very impressed! Would recommend!

Terrible Quality and Even Worse Customer Service

Bought this jacket a year ago and I didn't wear it too often, but recently noticed that the front of my jacket had holes where feathers were leaking out. I brought it to my local Patagonia store to see if there is anything they could do about it. The employee offered to have it repaired and that was the worst mistake ever!! The repair was half of the panel and a different color than rest of the jacket. After the repair I tried to return the jacket since it looked so bad. The store employee told me that they would offer me $40 credit to buy something from their used department. I was so shocked that I was at loss for words. Only had the Jacket for two days but have put it through its urban and field paces. I'm 5' 10" tall and 180 lbs. I'm a runner, but I'm carrying about 15 lbs more than my optimal trail-running physique. The medium is an ideal size for "no-excess-material" layering" under a shell or over a snug fleece. For me, the large would have been too big for under a Size Medium Salomon hard shell. YMMV. I do feel a VERY slight compression around my torso when I zip it. So if you're a late 40s, relatively athletic, dude of my size... there's the real dope. a Large would fit perfectly as a casual wear option, but I think a Large would bunch up under my shell. I want this combo to be trim, so this was the play. This piece is well-made and is a pleasure to wear. I love the warmth:weight balance... it's barely there, but warm.
