The down sweater will be the perfect insulation layer for a lot of people. Patagonia added more down fill in this version which makes it a bit warmer than the previous version while also adding some lighter weight shell material that keeps it packable. Initially I was concerned that the new shell would be more fragile but I have not had any durability issues yet. A friend of mine who also go the newest version of the sweater ripped the sleeve of his jacket when he got in a tight area on a chimney-like scramble although the damage was minimal and expected of any lighter weight jacket. Overall I am impressed by the performance of this jacket. It is warmer than I expected and carries into many different activities. I have used mine as layer while standing around ... Overall I am impressed by the performance of this jacket. It is warmer than I expected and carries into many different activities. I have used mine as layer while standing around between boulder attempts, on cold walks (20-30 degrees with a light base-layer), over a soft shell while skiing to keep warmth between transitions, and in the house as my family likes to keep things on the colder side. It is a layer that is light enough to justify bringing everywhere but warm enough to punch above that weight. The features of the jacket are also amazing. The zippers are more robust than a lot of its contemporaries (like a cerium or ghost whisper) and the collar has been given some more height that really does help to keep in warmth (it is noticeably higher and more snug than that of a nano puff and the last model of down sweater). Everything else is equally high quality with the exception of the cuffs which are looser than the older model (I wish they would have just kept those cuffs). While not a deal breaker (they are still functional) the cuffs keep this jacket back from being perfect. With that being said, this remains the classic puffer and will perform as expected. If you're on the fence I would wait until it goes on sale then pick one up, chances are you won't be disappointed.

Bought it on sale for $140 and for the price its an amazing jacket. Originally bought with the intent of having it for use on the trail during the cold months or for wearing around camp when backpacking. It's incredibly warm, almost too warm at points. I never end up wearing it while actually doing any activity but it makes for the perfect camp jacket when backpacking during the colder times. It packs down super small and light and I've actually found that when packed down, it makes for the perfect pillow and so I don't need to carry an actual pillow with me in my pack. I've also used it while skiing in NH this season and while the temps have been bizarre at times (upper 30s to 40s!), it's been perfect for late in the day or on the runs where the sun is ... And then I'd pack it down small when I got to class and stuff it away in my backpack. This is my first down jacket and given how expensive it is, I tend to baby it a lot because I'm worried about ripping it or ruining it. It can take some light abuse, but should for sure be treated with care and paired with a shell during potentially dangerous activities which could rip it. I love it so much and hope to wear it for years to come. Still uncertain if I think it is worth full price however but I suppose that's Patagonia for ya

I wear this down jacket all winter long, sometimes sleeping in it after coming home from long Ski Patrol shifts, too tired to change. Its just the right amount of insulation to wear under a shell while boarding. Warm enough (with base layer) hikes, errands around town on 25f days - Any colder and I'll need another layer or heavier down jacket. I regularly work outdoors in howling -20f windchill for 1-2 hrs with this Down Sweater + 3-in-1 Powder Town Jacket + baselayer (plus a very nice set of gloves), usually my feet get cold first before I need to warm up by the fire. Even though this isn't my heaviest down, its the one that gets, by far, the most use. Fits under boarding shell in winter or rain jacket in spring. Exterior has survived many winter hikes through ... Exterior has survived many winter hikes through brush with no tears yet. Wrist elastic bands and waist pulls keep heat in very well. Another patroller has the exact jacket, we both notice a slight bulge in the upper belly from the zipper which gives a slightly less than flattering profile that I've never seen in any other Patagonia down, but thats my only minor gripe.
I have had two of these down "sweaters" over the last five years. I love wearing them because although very light weight I have been able to wear them through three seasons in cold Winnipeg. However the one drawback I find is that the "ripstop" nylon outer shell is prone to small rips. Even the smallest rip leads to down working its way out. I have also used recommended "Tenacious Tape" on these rips but cannot keep up with the number of new rips. My jacket is looking patchy enough. I do not wash my jacket frequently ( usually once a year ) but eventually the patches start coming partially off and the down starts coming out. I have contacted Patagonia once to suggest they start using a better quality of outer nylon. Its current outer shell is not what I would call ... It would be worth an increased price for that to be more durable.
As a 30 year Patagonia vetaran and almost always a size large. I ordered a replacement online for my older model without realizing it had been updated a few seasons ago. This now model sweater large is definitely too big in the body. Not slim fit, not regular fit. More like an 80's style dad jacket. It's way baggy, for guys who love too much beer. Arms are a perfect length, but I would have to be 20-25 lbs heavier to fill this gut space.People probably should size down.I'm returning the large, (as soon as the always-down narvar is back up), and just picked up a medium at Patagonia Japan. Arms are slightly too short as usual for mediums on me, and the chest is snug because, muscles, but at least I'm not drowning in material now. Looks sharper and should be ... Open iit looks like a Dracula cape collar, and is trying way too hard... closed it's very European or something... Possibly more effective against the elements way up under the chin but.... Not quite cool to me, so far.BTW, I knew already but Patagonia Japan doesn't function as part of Patagonia USA, and they can't help you in this kind of international situation. You also cannot easily return or exchange Patagonia Japan products as we do in the States.I think it's scandalous and shameful that the corporate hierarchy allows Patagonia Japan to flout our Patagonia USA policies and traditions and only act like capitalists, not caring about our community. Not bad to have shops here but I personally would rather just get international shipping than to let them corrupt and take advantage our principles...They wouldn't even exist here without how we do things there, but they won't get on board? Hypocrisies abound.
I'm 6'2", 155lbs tall/slim build (think runner). I'm usually between a size M or L depending on the brand of clothing, but Mediums from Patagonia usually fit really well for me, including a Torrentshell 3L rain jacket. For whatever reason the Down jackets fit differently than other Patagonia jackets. I tried a medium first, and while it fit really well in the shoulders and chest, the sleeves were slightly shorter than I preferred. After wearing it for a bit I found myself constantly tugging at the bottom of the jacket. I feel like the medium needed to be JUST 1 inch longer in the body of the jacket and it would have been great.Returned the Medium and purchased a Large, thinking that would fit better. However, when the Large arrived I had the opposite problem. Fit ... MoreI'm 6'2", 155lbs tall/slim build (think runner). Learn from my mistake and order both sizes that you are usually between in this jacket to compare the fit at the same time instead of having to wait for things to ship to and fro.
I cannot give a review on the jacket itself other than first impressions of it. Jacket runs a tiny bit smaller than other brands, my husband is usually a Small. Ordered that size and it fit but layering anything other than a t-shirt under it made the jacket bulge. Tried a size up at an REI store and that was comically large. Main reason he didn't like it is that it felt cheap. He commented that the zipper felt like it would break quickly. Ended up returning and purchasing a different brand that had same fill and pack ability but felt like better quality. Also, didn't pay attention when first ordering from Backcountry but was a little shocked they charged $7 for return shipping. Would've expected a lower price or even free when spending this much on gear. Hopefully ... MoreI cannot give a review on the jacket itself other than first impressions of it. The Down Sweater is undoubtedly well made. The fabric is comfy and the features are wonderful. However, the sizing and fit seemed way off for me.I'm 5 ft 11 in tall, weigh 175, have a 31-in waist, with a fairly athletic build. I wear a medium shirt, but usually size up to large for jackets in order to accommodate layering. When I ordered the Down Sweater, I grabbed both a large and a medium just to make sure I got the right size.First, I tried the medium. The torso width was perfect around the shoulders, stomach, and waist; however, from top to bottom it was way too short for me. It's about two inches shorter than the Better Sweater I had on underneath, which isn't the fit I want. But more than that, the forearms of the sleeves are really what ruined the medium ... It's about two inches shorter than the Better Sweater I had on underneath, which isn't the fit I want. But more than that, the forearms of the sleeves are really what ruined the medium for me as they're very constricting. As I said, I had a Better Sweater on underneath the Down Sweater and the Down Sweater's sleeves could barely go over the Better Sweater's sleeves. It was very uncomfortable and annoying. Then I tried the size large. Obviously, everything was bigger, so tight sleeves weren't an issue. However, the midsection of the torso, around the belly, was way too generous. I don't have much of a belly, but the jacket made me look like I was several months pregnant. Using the cinch cord around the waist just made it look worse. So, my choice was between the medium and it's annoyingly tight sleeves or the large and it's frumpy looking midsection. Ultimately, for a jacket this expensive, I couldn't justify either and returned both.
Patagonia has devolved into a vanity product line catering to wealthy professionals who are more interested in making a statement among their social group than using the gear for outdoor activities. This devolution has been ongoing for many years but is nearly complete (Yvon Chouinard betrayed his vision). For example, I recall a fair percentage of the tech titans, none of whom had engage in serious outdoor activities, wearing Patagonia vests at their annual retreat beginning about ten years ago. My wife gifted me one of these this year. Even at about half price, it is grossly overpriced, given its quality and functionality. The jacket is very thin and offers little warmth. I mostly wear it while working at home during winter when our thermostat is at 70, or to work, dinner, or elsewhere when I want to make a statement (I live in Southern California). It has a down rating of 800 and is supposed to be sufficient for temperatures below freezing, but it is not even close to warm enough for that. I have a 20+-year-old NF puffer rated 650 that is far, far warmer even after being washed at least a dozen times, even as its temp rating is 40F. The Patagonia has a flimsy drawcord at the hips but none at the wrists or neck to minimize airflow in cold temps. The wrists are not even elastic. I guess those features are asking too much for a $400 "down sweater"? The jacket also has an odd fit. I'm 5'8", 140, and normally wear medium. I rarely have difficulties finding activewear that fits well, so I initially bought a medium. However, it is super long and thin. The medium width was fine, but the length was for a 6'0" to 6'2" man. I exchanged it for a small, which is still a tad long but too thin in the chest for me. I have never had this issue before. The jacket also resists movement, unlike well-designed active gear. It is clearly designed for a look much more so than for a function -- a compromise no serious outdoors person would make. I don't understand how Patagonia gets away with this -- charging outlandish prices for poor quality and poorly designed gear. This jacket is not their only problem, but rather, more the norm as they are focused on vanity.
