I live in Alaska, and good raingear is essentially not only for outdoor comfort, but for survival (hypothermia). This is truly a "best in class" raincoat that gives you the perfect balance of light weight, heavy construction, rain protection you can count on. I've been soaked in these, but never soaked through. To have anything more reliable, you'd have to go with PVC, but then you'd be dealing with a lot more weight, plus getting soaked with your own sweat. These are killer for ski touring, fly fishing, and ultra long distance hiking. The light weight makes it great for travel, and it looks super socially-acceptable in all situations. The hood is big, but you can tighten it down, and it is meant to work with a helmet if needed. Definitely do not hesitate to get the Granite Crest!

Seems like a pretty decent jacket. We haven't had any heavy rains recently so I haven't had a chance to use it in any real weather. It seems to breathe fairly well.I find patagonia jackets fit a bit odd. I guess I'm sort of between Large and XL. But at least with the XL I can layer underneath. The jacket has a nice texture. It's smooth against the skin and doesn't make nearly as much noise as the torrentshell which this jacket replaces. The chest pocket is pretty useful and large, it will fit most phones. The two hand pockets are also nicely sized. Zippers seem like they are good quality. I like the hood on the torrentshell better but this one should still work fine.My old torrent shell and the granite crest weigh almost exactly the same.

I had high hopes for this jacket given all of the stellar reviews and product description (all day trail use in wet conditions). However, I became drenched inside the coat when out for several hours of continuous moderate-to-hard raining conditions (starting at the lower arms, increasing to above the elbows, then under hood and torso). It was probably fine for about the first hour, but gradually could feel the water seeping in as time went on.The jacket is very lightweight & easy to stow, has a nice supple feel to it and does help break moderate wind. It just doesn't seem like a good choice if you have to be out in the rain for more than an hour or two at a time.Patagonia Customer Support has been very responsive and accommodating to help me find a jacket that is ... MoreI had high hopes for this jacket given all of the stellar reviews and product description (all day trail use in wet conditions). This jacket is terrific. I bought it on sale and the price was super. I really like the recycled nature of the fabric. We need to do what we can to save this planet. I can't say enough good about this jacket. I really like it. Keeps me dry, blocks wind, and vents if I get too warm. My only comment is that the size is tight. Before buying, I contacted REI to get a size recommendation. I was told to get a Large. I am 61", 215 pounds, or so. The large fits fine in summer. But, once I add a layer underneath, the jacket is tight. I really should have gone with my instincts and purchased an extra large. Get the right size, you will absolutely love this jacket and be proud you are helping to save the planet by wearing it.
I have owned this jacket for two years and have put it to the test in everything the PNW can throw at it. It has been used for climbing, skiing, camping, hiking, biking around town, sailing, and multiple trips around the US and abroad. It has kept me comfortable and dry the entire time. Despite the constant use it still looks and performs as if it were new.The hood is big enough to easily fit over a climbing or skiing helmet, and is very adjustable so you can cinch it secure over a helmet, or just over your head. The chest pocket is perfect for a phone or keys, and the two large pockets are great for hands, gloves, or gear. The zippers are very nice and have held up well, and keep everything inside dry. 3 pockets seems to be the right amount. I have a lot of shells, but this is the one I keep coming back to no matter the sport or event. 10/10!
I bought this from Outside Sports at the Queenstown (NZ) airport store in October 2023 prior to hiking the Tongariro Alpine circuit. It was fantastic for wind resistance and felt great quality wise. I’ve done three hikes in the rain now and wear this for work commutes. I am a bit disappointed because rain droplets don’t bead and run off like gore-tex jackets I’ve worn in the past. The jacket becomes wet straight away, even in light rain and I find my arms get soaked inside the jacket. I have only spot treated the chest area of the jacket with NikWax because of a food stain but left the jacket as I bought it otherwise. Does this qualify for a send-in for repair/assessment?
I've had a couple TorrentShells(?) over the years. the most recent one started breaking down/delaminating at the back of the neck near that microfiber patch. I brought it into the local store to ask about it. The folks there said that it's important to actually wash these shells, a thing I rarely did for fear of clogging the pores with soap and impairing the water resistance and breathability of it. I was wrong; in fact, washing the thing helps keep it working as designed. So, in the absence of my regularly cleaning it, it began delaminating at the neck. "Reasonable wear and tear?" I asked."Yes," the store folks said. I said okay, and then they offered to refund the price I paid for it. What?!! I didn't go in seeking some sort of deal; I had gotten eight years' use ... MoreI've had a couple TorrentShells(?) over the years. the most recent one started breaking down/delaminating at the back of the neck near that microfiber patch. I didn't go in seeking some sort of deal; I had gotten eight years' use out of it, which I thought was fair. I was super grateful for the thoughtfulness (and their standing by their product) and quickly spent the credit on this new, more bomber Granite Crest, which I understand is a technological upgrade over the TorrentShell. Though I haven't used it out on the trail yet, it looks great, feels comfy, and (I'm told) won't wear out like the TorrentShell. I look forward to a new eight years with it. One other thing: When I'm heading out (it used to be climbing; now it's backpacking, hiking, and car camping), I find myself reaching for certain gear again and again. Certain Patagonia gear. Base layers, fleeces, shorts, shirts, and outer layers like this purchase. It feels good on the body, looks sharp, and importantly, does the work advertised. That Patagonia is a company whose ethics I buy into, that they offer free repairs, that they sell re-used, worn goods on WornWear keeps me coming back to them. And urging my friends (and others) to buy for life with Patagonia. Buy this as your next shell.
Really wanted to use this as a mid-to-light hiking and backpacking shell. However, appropriate fabric weight for 3-season use and a good feature set and overall reasonable fit is letdown by inexplicably short sleeves.Sleeve length in the XL falls a full 2-3 cm shorted than any other Patagonia garment I own. I sized the XL based on the near perfect fit of my R1 Tech Hoody, but if I were to layer these two pieces, the shell would fall almost an inch behind where the insulator ends. Not something I'd want if I'm wearing this in a persistent drizzle. For comparison, both the Boulder Fork and the Triolet have an a appropriate sleeve length (though in that case one isn't quite suitable for extended trips, and the other is a bit overkill for non-alpine or 3-season use). ... MoreReally wanted to use this as a mid-to-light hiking and backpacking shell. Was hoping this would be a good middle ground, but will be returning as the fit just doesn't work.Would love to see actual product dimensions (chest, sleeve, etc.) in the specifications for each individual model of coat, as the overall cut and resulting fit across XLs all marked as Regular Fit is really varied. This is crucial if you're not able to find items locally and have specific requirements for how a particular garment will function.
While I do commend Patagonia for using an environmentally safe DWR, I can’t recommend this for a few reasons: price, durability, and other small design choices.Durability is a big reason I am giving a low rating. I can’t walk through the woods without worrying every branch that snags me has put a hole in the jacket. Over the 6 months I’ve had the jacket, the water proofing has been great, but there’s small holes in different places on the jacket because the outer layer is so extremely delicate that it can’t hold up in a daily setting outside what you might expect to encounter on a daily commute to the office. This isn’t really a technical outdoor piece of clothing, if you can’t wear it in the woods without risking damaging the integrity and functionality of the ... MoreWhile I do commend Patagonia for using an environmentally safe DWR, I can’t recommend this for a few reasons: price, durability, and other small design choices.Durability is a big reason I am giving a low rating. This isn’t really a technical outdoor piece of clothing, if you can’t wear it in the woods without risking damaging the integrity and functionality of the product. Massive oversight in my opinion. Now, I understand that it is a technical piece of clothing, so its lightweightness is something that I can commend and recommend for.One thing the jacket could really use is clamps to hold the adjustments you might make for the “helmet” or head elastics. I had to add my own clamps because otherwise, the hood will not stay cinched. It’s kind of useless to have an adjustment spot that doesn’t “stay” adjusted.I think for what its worth the torrentshell is going to serve most customers better than this jacket, and for that reason I can’t recommend this. Nor, for what I expect for the longevity of this jacket, do I recommend others looking to buy something that will stand the test of time. If you’re looking for a durable long term solution to staying dry. Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere than this jacket.I hate to leave such a critical of a patagonia item, but I have experienced much better quality elsewhere from patagonia, and would love to see some of these problems addressed.
The only issue I have with this jacket is the hood. I wanted a similar in weight to the torrentshell but with a helmet compatible me hood, and I know these hoods are bigger—that was desired and expected. However, this hood doesn’t cinch properly specifically at the neck gaiter part. When you compare to how it “scrunches” on another jacket from Patagonia, the triolet, you’ll see this one doesn’t really scrunch up, it just pulls the collar higher up your face and doesn’t tighten it down. So it leaves a lot of loose fabric which allows water to seep in instead of having a really locked down tight fit.The other issue with the hood is it’s just harder to adjust that neck gaiter part. It’s much easier on the triolet and also on the arcteryx beta LT.I still however enjoy ... MoreThe only issue I have with this jacket is the hood.
