This is a heavy plus to all the other reviews for bringing back the Nine Trails shorts. Those shorts were amazing on for trail running and my most favorite Patagonia product over the years. These new Multi Trail Shorts miss the mark on several points (as mentioned by the other reviewers). The top for me being the change to the snap rear pocket. For shorts that are bouncing around while running, I want the pocket contents to be as secure as possible on long runs. Going to a pocket where you can't completely close it seems like a huge step backwards. For example, I would use the rear pocket to stash all my empty fuel / Gu packets during races and runs so I'd be sure I wouldn't be littering that trash while running down the trail. The rear pocket was also great to secure your car key (with the key loop) when parking at the trailhead. Can't do either of those with these new shorts. What function is the snap pocket going for? I can't think of a reason for needing it since if you wanted an "open pocket" periodically you could have just unzipped the rear pocket on Nine Trail shorts without losing the feature of having a zipper when you need it.The redesign on the front pockets also isn't great. These new pockets are less ergonomic since they are more vertical and moved back to towards the side seam. The slight angle and forward position on the previous pockets made it easier to get items in and out while still running down the trail. Also as mentioned, the new pocket flaps seem to be better at getting stuck in the zipper than anything else. I know these are the little thing but those details added to the Nines being a superior running short while training, racing or even just causal running.Last but not least, the new shorts are slightly baggier which means more bounce on runs. Not totally awesome for long runs when your trousers are constantly moving for 2 to 12+ hours!I know the Strider shorts are available. However, those are shorter at 7" and they lack the front zip pockets -- which are great to hold your cell phone and other larger items on long runs.Patagonia - For the love of all things beautiful in this world, please bring back the Nine Trails shorts!!

I'm grateful for giving these shorts a try for trail running since in doing so I was able to see how they could serve a few more of my needs. They are light weight, fast drying, and the built-in liner is soft, comfortable, and prevents chaffing. After wearing them for about a year and packing them and other shorts for a recent fly fishing expedition, it dawned on me that the Multi Trail shorts aren't just for trails. With that, I started to use them for days of fly fishing in some diverse settings, from being on a boat to wet wading on sand banks to schlepping through wetlands to then having to jump in a truck to move to other locations. Other features I liked were the two front zip pockets, which came in handy for not letting things like lip balm float away. One upgrade would be to change the closure of the back pocket to a zip for the same added security. Overall, these shorts fit well and continue to help me on my quest of 'less is more', especially since I'm now also using them for mountain bike rides and hiking now that I'm back home in New England.

I just got my first pair of Multi Trails after an old pair of my Nine Trails shorts wore out. I visited my local store to see if they could be repaired or replaced. Patagonia happily swapped my old pair for a brand new pair of the updated design. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate and respect a company that stands behind their products like that.I do agree with the other reviewers that preferred the Nine Trails fit, length, and pockets over the new design. I really enjoyed the rear zipper pocket on the Nine Trails - I could always find peace of mind keeping a room key or valet key in there when I’d go swimming and knew I wasn’t going to open my front pockets for something else and lose my key by accident. The new rear snap pocket is okay, but doesn’t feel very secure. Even an overhang flap, like on Baggies shorts, might make the new pocket feel more enclosed & substantial. I agree that the extra fabric along the front pockets makes the zippers harder to close. Additionally, the new cut seems to almost fit longer and baggier like basketball shorts instead of running shorts. All in all the Multi Trails will be good shorts, I know I will enjoy them and I wouldn’t discourage anybody else from giving them a try. They’re very high quality shorts from a very high quality company. However, I personally don’t plan on stocking up on them like I did the Nine Trails. (When I found the 9’s I purchased four pairs and lived in them all day every day for the last 3 summers. Swimming, exercising, walking the dogs, cutting the grass, traveling, lounging - they’ve been great for almost everything.) I hope Patagonia pivots back towards the old design, and if they do, I’ll be purchasing them for as long as they still make them.

I live in Alaska, and don't get to go shopping at REI much unless I am travelling. I did a major "shorts sesh" where I grabbed over a dozen different pairs of highly similar shorts, and tried them out to see which was the best. Patagonia, Vuori, Janji, REI brand... you get the idea. Anyhow, the Patagonia Men's Multi Trails Shorts emerged victorious from this majorly ambitious contest, getting the gold medal in comfort, function, and versatility. They may not look wildly exciting in the photos here, but you will be wildly excited by how useful they are. I used to not be a "liner guy" - but the liners of these are so comfortable, I actually prefer them to my usual boxers. It also helps to have 1 item to deal with during travel, rather than 2. I've rocked these in the desert, on the trails in the summer, on a bike, and for nordic walking / elghufs. If these things can handle elghufs, they can handle you! Get them... without any further hesitation! The price may seem high, but Patagonia repairs their gear ad infinitum, which is a major part of the value proposition.
I don't even know how many pairs of nine trails shorts I own, but I've bought them for as long as I've known they existed and it's at least a dozen. This is one of those things where I thought I'd found the perfect shorts and I never had to think about shorts again, and I could use my brain for something more useful. Turns out Patagonia had something else in mind. Some of the changes I don't mind. They are slightly baggier and the material is lighter and smoother, that's so far that's fine. I doubt that they'll hold up well, but it's too early to tell. What bothers me are the genuinely stupid decisions made by Patagonia. First, the decision to use a button snap on the back pocket instead of a zipper makes me crazy. I guess it's easier if you're planning to use a choice for walking around and you have a wallet in there, but most of us are running have more uses for pockets that seal and less for pockets the things can bounce out of. Not a deal killer, but annoying. The thing I truly can't understand, is it they added baffles to the pockets, so literally anytime you zipper unzip the pocket while running or walking, you snag the zipper and have to spend time trying to fix it. This happens more often than it doesn't, it is incredibly frustrating. There's no way this was tested in the field for runners. It's incomprehensible it's something so obvious would have been missed by professional testers. Either that, or they just decided that the appearance value is more important than the functionality, which is not why we pay $80 for freaking shorts.Anyway, I gave this two stars instead of one because I haven't found another pair of shorts that I like better. I haven't looked that hard, and I guess I keep hoping Patagonia will bring back better running shorts.
Long time Patagonia customer. This is the first time I've had to use the Iron Clad Guarantee and I'm glad I have it. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is a non-functional cloth zipper cover that serves no real purpose except to cover up the pocket zipper and that you can't keep from zipping up into the zipper. Very frustrating when you are actually on a long trail run and trying to get a gel out of your pocket. You can't really stop on the trail, take your shorts off, and futz with the zipper. My left front pocket zipper lasted less than a month in my rotation. It's difficult for me to imagine that this design was vetted by people who actually use this gear on a long trail run or in an ultra situation. It's difficult for me to imagine that this design was vetted by people who actually use this gear on a long trail run or in an ultra situation. Also, as mentioned before, the snap on the back pocket doesn't inspire confidence. I'm sad about the whole thing because I have worn out several of the old Nine Trails short that I am told this short was supposed to replace. The Nine Trails had a much more functional pocket zipper design on the front pockets (no non-sensical fashion cover that gets caught) and had a zippered back pocket. Now I have to go through the process of finding another short with decent carrying capacity for long trail runs and speed hikes. I hope the good people in Customer Service at Patagonia submit all of this feed back to the design people so that they can correct.
I've been a huge fan of the Nine Trails shorts and no shorts have ever come close to these. They were perfect in every way the leg opening had a nice taper and zippers on every pocket was amazing. I never had bounce, the material was perfect. I had nothing negative to say about these.I bought these because I don't see the nine trails restock and I really really hope you aren't going to discontinue the nine trails.Anyways, lets start with the leg opening, I don't know what makes you go towards this sort of cut but it is terrible. It is boxy, way too loose, the leg opening is like dress also because you made it more loose there is much more bounce of the items in the pocket causing a more frustrating experience while running. It is boxy, way too loose, the leg opening is like dress also because you made it more loose there is much more bounce of the items in the pocket causing a more frustrating experience while running. That in it of itself kinda ruins the whole thing. You say its to create better range of motion regardless of body type and I don't buy that what so ever. I have large thighs way bigger than the average, and I never felt any sort of restriction. So I don't really understand this decision whatsoever it is oblivious. If anything you should've kept the same cut since you are using a more stretchable material, that should result in better range of motion! No need to ruin the cut of your products.Next the length, I own 4 nine trails and compared them all side by side and the length is a bit longer again again referring back to the horrible cut. Its unflattering and do not feel confident in these shorts. If the goal was to make them "lighter" these shorts should not been the ones. If you run trails you wont even noticed the difference what so ever, so why try to achieve a lighter profile. Keep that to the shorter inseam running shorts. A couple grams is not going to weigh anyone down. Now onto the snap button, just a horrible decision to switch from the zipper. I always felt confident with the nine trails zippers and now you have to worry about damaging the button if you decide to rest on a rock while on the trail. Now that's another frustration to consider, when it rubs and scrapes on everything. This button is going to wear out at this rate. Also a button has a higher failure rate than the zipper. I always carry my wallet in the back pocket I feel so secure knowing its zipped up. A button does not give you the same confidence of your pockets security.Overall if these are going to replace the nine trails then we just lost a great product. In conclusion, these shorts are a collection of horrible design decisions and genuinely believe these did not need to go intro production to replace an already perfect product.
Those that are unhappy with these shorts, because they're comparing them to a similar, discontinued product aren't giving this product a proper, unbiased review and allowing them to shine as a standalone product. These are some the best shorts I've ever owned. At 5'8" with a 32" inseam, these shorts sit a few inches above the knee which is exactly where I want them and where a short functions best for general recreation activities from hiking to climbing. They're long enough to provide suitable coverage from the elements while short enough and mobile/stretchy enough via the fabric to move with your body. The liner doesn't ride up my larger thighs and I've experienced zero chaffing or discomfort, even while working in the very hot Arizona sun for hours on end.The ... MoreThose that are unhappy with these shorts, because they're comparing them to a similar, discontinued product aren't giving this product a proper, unbiased review and allowing them to shine as a standalone product. These are some the best shorts I've ever owned. The fabric is soft and manages sweat and dirt well. The side pockets are deep enough to carry a wallet or large phone with issue and they don't flare out like the pockets in some running shorts, keeping the overall profile of the shorts very composed. The rear pocket snap button works well enough and I don't feel concerned for my wallet. After purchasing a few pairs, all I want to wear are these shorts, especially when comparing them to similar products from other brands, or shorts that are outdoor or activity focused. I'll be placing an order for more and hoping Patagonia keeps these in their line up for several years.
I received one of those unsolicited offers for these shorts. Man am I glad I clicked. Although they are not cheap, the fit, form and function are excellent. I've been looking for lightweight shorts made from this type of material for years. I hope they last a long time, because you know retailers never make the same thing twice, only in this instance I'm hoping that's not true. I bought 3 pair to hedge my bets! Initially, I had two pair of black and one pair of blue in my cart. When I attempted to check out, the black delivery date seemed unreasonable, so I adjusted from two pair black down to one. The delivery date returned to reasonable. After my initial purchase, I went shopping for additional stock on the interweb and managed to score my third pair in the sold-out "loose yourself" color on another retailer's site. The zippered pockets are large enough to stuff plenty of necessities and the waistband with drawstring manage to hold everything up. Very functional and comfortable. Great product. My only complaint; I wish they had the old-school Patagonia label!
So I feel compelled to defend these shorts based on some of the other reviews. I have a handful of the previous iteration (Nine Trails), which I love, and I was hesitant to give the new version a try based on some of the other reviews.I took them for a spin yesterday on the trails, and I was very happy with them. I don't find that the slightly more billowy leg opening to be an issue at all - it offers a little more range of motion than its predecessor.I prefer the fabric of the these over the Nine Trails - little lighter, more stretch, and per the tag, better odor control. And while I do prefer a zipper on the back pocket, it's not really an issue for me as that pocket is primarily for small trash I find while in the woods - I don't think anything will fly out of ... MoreSo I feel compelled to defend these shorts based on some of the other reviews. I do not use the pockets when running/hiking because I always have a pack on which carries everything - I do not like anything bouncing around in my pockets. The shape of the pockets is a little wonky (not sure if it's just my pair or they're all cut the exact same). When I was wearing these to walk the dog, my phone was in my pocket, and it had the tendency to slip sideways inside the pocket, which was a little awkward feeling and I had to keep adjusting it. The pocket of the Nine Trails was more narrow (up and down), and my phone always stayed vertical. I agree with another reviewer that the zipper has a tendency to catch on the fabric that surrounds the pockets/hangs over the zipper (for protection of the zipper?).I will say, however, that the overall fit is a little more loose, and the drawstring is a little stretchier which was needed to tighten it all up. All my Nine Trails are Larges, but I might be better suited in a Medium in these.Overall, an incredibly comfortable short, which I am happy to add to my collection of other Patagonia shorts and a go-to choice when hiking, running in the woods, walking my dog, and lounging.
