I just bought my second pair of these. My first pair is still going strong after 4 years, but I decided to double up after finding a second pair on sale.These are my favorite base layer for winter hiking in the White Mountains. I wear them under a shell layer in temps below 40F. I've used them down to a -30 windchill and, as I layer them, my legs don't get cold while I'm hiking. Occasionally in tree cover I find myself venting the sides of my shell pants because my legs can get pretty toasty.My legs do tend to run warmer while hiking. These leggings seem to stay pretty breathable and I'd say they dry on the faster side.These also rule as a casual camping layer in shoulder season, or a under layer in the dead of winter for chilly mornings or casual outdoor activities.

At 79 yrs my activities are more sedate now - hiking, fast walking, photo-ing, some biking, etc. These thermal weight capalene base layer pants are warm, comfortable, fexible allowing for much movement - ie pedaling, kneeling, lots of bending etc - some stretching out but still maintain fit and function. Worn under shorts they keep me plenty warm, although in rain when wet they lose some warmth. Some snagging but easily repaired. My second pair, highly recommend for somewhat passive activities , ie wallking hiking etc (don't know how they work in more extreme applications)

I was forewarned by reviews I read prior to purchase that the fit in the legs was very loose, so I ordered a Medium rather than a Large, so the fit wasn't too bad. For some reason it looked like they used thinner elastic than they had used in the other two pair of Patagonia midweight Capilene baselayers I own. Bad idea: it is constantly rolling up on itself. Very annoying. Also, the fly area isn't very well done. As noted in some detail in my review of the top, the laundering/care isn't great. The Patagonia return protocol was very good.

Some of the reviews on here report an odd fit, which they definitely have. They are kinda bagging leggings with a secure waistband. I have furry tree trunk legs so that was awesome for me! I wear 35waist and usually need a relaxed/athletic cut pant or a stretch material slim cut - so These fit me perfectly. I could see how if you have little baby chicken legs you would probably want to shop down a size or hit the gym. Yeah idk if people want long Johns to fit like strink wrap tubing around your downstairs mix-up but I hate being suffocated by sweatpants and thermals when skiing or running so these are probably the best baselayer bottoms Ive ever owned bc fit.They seem so thin and light but are stupid warm. I like the long Johns overall the waist fits me well (I wear a 32). I like the fabric but if Patagonia offered something a little heavier I would buy it.My main feed back is the legs are a little baggy at least in part because the are longer than other l.J.s I own . This is mainly an issue when pairing them with work pants, just too much fabric.Fit especially in pants and bottoms is a possible place for improvement for Patagonia. I usually wear merino baselayers, but after several of them developed holes in them, I decided to try these poly pants instead.I find the sizing of these really odd. Usually with baselayers you want a skin tight fit. But these are pretty loose. And really long too. I wear medium in most North American brands, including Patagonia. And I bought a medium pair of these pants. The pant leg goes all the way down, around my ankle, to cover half my foot. I would definitely recommend sizing down if you are thinking about getting a pair.Warmth wise I am not so sure, as I haven't tried them in the cold yet. But just trying them on at home is making me wonder if I should keep or return these.
I bought this specifically for the cold, wet and windy Cape Town winters when you gotta be outside but don't want your legs to freeze. I'd wear this under a pair of jeans and they were brilliant. I've attended many outdoor events with them as a baselayer and they are phenomenal at retaining warmth.Indoors, they can act as comfy sweatpants that are stretchy, very light and incredibly warm. They are a tiny bit see-through.As with most of the capilene air line of clothing, the wool can be a bit itchy the first time you wear the clothing, but you get used to it and the abrasion subsides quickly, nothing to really worry about.

So while SOME people may appreciate the loose floppy ankles with tons of extra fabric, I don't. I'd definitely want them more snug. Secondly there is enough space to fit like 4 pairs of buttcheeks in the torso portion. I can pull the waist bad up to my nipples.its just a very weird combination of form fitting and baggy.
