I'd recommend these shorts and would purchase a second pair (only when truly needed though). Well done, Patagonia.

I've been wearing Patagonia surf trunks for many moons. These new, Hydropeak scalloped boardies are my favorite, yet. The 18" length is ideal: just long enough to minimize wax rashing when sitting on your board, but not the baggy, knee-length(+) fit of the Momentum Generation ('90's). The fabric is light & quick drying with a functional amount of stretch and, yet, adequately durable for wearing day after day, uh, after day. The drawstring closure holds well in beat down situations, and I really appreciate the fly gusset in lieu of dreaded velcro. My only quip is the use of hook & loop (velcro) on the wax pocket. Modify that to a zipper closure and expand the range of colorways. I love these board shorts. They're great in hot weather and dry quickly when wet. The 21" outseam falls just above the knee on me, which I like. The fabric has a little stretch to it. I use them for swimming, body boarding, running and casual wear. These shorts have one pocket on the right hip secured with velcro. For casual wear an additional pocket have been nice but not a dealbreaker for me. I got the tidewater-blue color and like it.

Great boardshorts but don't chose your size based on other Patagonia shorts
19 December 2022

I really like the fit and material of these boardshorts. They are comfortable and the material seems to be more durable than others I've owned. Here are the negatives from my pov:There is a back pocket which makes no sense to me. I would prefer a side pocket like they put on the wavefarer shorts. As I've found across a lot of Patagonia clothing, sizing is not consistent across product lines, so you can't buy the same size shorts in every style and it's best to try them on first. I wear a 31 in the Wavefarer and a 33 in the Hydropeak, which is very frustrating.

Great boardshorts but hard to get on!
18 December 2022

These are great boardshorts overall. Lightweight, comfortable, not bulky, durable, and quick drying. I love the aesthetics as well. My main complaint with these boardies is the waist entry --- the waist does not open too much when pulling these on, so I actually have to struggle to get them over my hips and I have narrow hips. They could be improved if the fly opened more so as to create a larger opening so they slide right on. Once on, however, they are great.

Perfect fit, smart details
29 August 2023

These are probably my sixth or seventh pair of Patagonia board shorts, and they're probably the best pair I've ever owned. The fit is perfect, and I appreciate Patagonia offering some shorts that stop above the knees. My favorite part, though, is the fly. Or lack of fly. Or whatever. There's no zipper or buttons to mess with up front. That does two things: it makes them super easy to get them on and off (never having to re-thread the draw strings); and it prevents any chaffing/abrasion up front. These shorts really adhere to the minimalist, less-is-more Patagonia philosophy that I appreciate so much. Yes, it makes taking a wiz a half step more cumbersome, but it's a happy tradeoff for me. If I could change anything, I probably would prefer a zippered rear pocket, or even a rear pocket that doesn't close at all, as opposed to the velcro closure rear pocket, but at this point, we're being REALLY nitpicky, aren't we? The bottom line is that these shorts are awesome, well worth the price for the quality. 10/10 would recommend.

Quality!
18 May 2022

Very nice shorts! I dont go into the ocean enough anymore, wearing these shorts for the next best thing, beach volleyball! Like the lightness and the stretchy fabric. Top quality, cant go wrong. But what could be perhaps possible: #1: longer in the length, and #2: more experimental colors. Seriously I cant buy blacks and blues anymore after this pair, so how about burgundy, army green, or tie-dye? On another level, and perhaps I should not say this, almost all board shorts seem to be styled in color and length and pattern for an ethnicity that darker-skinned folk like me find it difficult to relate to, despite the stunning photos of the surfers in the Patagonia catalogs, sigh. Just a thought. Thats probably just me! Anyway, love these shorts!

SERIOUSLY Slim Fit
21 May 2022

So I have trimmed up quite a bit over the last 3 years and realized my size 32 swim trunks were feeling a bit loose. I had a hard time finding a pattern I liked online and came across these on Patagonia. I dont mind paying for quality products especially ones environmentally sourced however.I have purchased 2 pairs of these now. The first were size 31 and were so tight I barely was able to scale my thighs and butt without worry about the seams splitting. Forget pullling the laces together to tie as the flaps didnt align due to the tightness. These are for sure slim cut heavy on the slim. Which brings me to the fact that I am slim with practically no butt?? Skinny jeans look like normal jeans on me?? I returned the 31s for a 32 and sadly still find these shorts to be ... MoreSo I have trimmed up quite a bit over the last 3 years and realized my size 32 swim trunks were feeling a bit loose. I returned the 31s for a 32 and sadly still find these shorts to be just a bit too snug trying to get them up. I find this very disappointing. And at the very high end of the spectrum price wise for a board short I dont want to risk tearing these. I am also puzzled as to why they are so expensive because there really is nothing overly special about these other than a scallop cut and fish emblem. They have less flexibility than my old board shorts from another very notable manufacturer. I have purchased several items in the past from Patagonia and probably will in the future (maybe) but find these shorts somewhat disappointing and underwhelming. The 32s are going back as well. I am 511.5 and weight 180 with a fairly trim athletic build.

Stretchy and Comfortable
27 March 2023

Though many board short companies are making pieces with stretchy material, I am recommending these because the cut of these is very comfortable. As a 6'2" person, the 21" outseam is enough to cover my blanched white thighs from the sun. Though I have never run a marathon with these, the pattern cut is also such that I don't feel much chafing (in all areas). Besides supporting Patagonia, a company who puts all its profits towards non-profit orgs that care for the earth, when you're done wearing it - you can get money for passing it on to someone else (through Patagonia's trade-in program).

lightwieght material is cool on hot days

Fit is a little more relaxed than the Lightweight Baggies. There is no liner.Pocket bags are mesh and drain quickly, also keeping the bulk down compared to Baggies that only have mesh at the bottom. Items dont fall out when you sit down since the pocket bag is free floating, not sewn into the side seams like Baggies.Length is just right, outer drawstring stays tied, and large rear pocket has ample Velcro to keep items secure.Overall, these are a better weight material and fit than Baggies and also better cut/fit, better drawstring, no mesh liners, and better pockets than the Lightweight Baggies. They've become one of my new favorite shorts styles.
