I received my R1 Air yesterday and I am VERY happy with it. I'm 5'4, around 155lbs, with a fairly straight build and traditionally wear a large in Patagonia. Based on some reviews I had read, I was concerned that it would be too slim for my build but I found it to fit perfectly. It is slim, but comfortably so. I have room for movement and layering underneath (tried with a baggy long sleeved cotton t-shirt and it fit just fine). I love the length of it. I tend to hike and backpack in leggings, but like a little more coverage when I am wearing them and was glad that the R1 air offered that compared to some of my other fleeces that hit at the top of the hip. I think the zigzag design will offer good breathability for hiking. Overall the design doesn't seem as technical as the standard R1, but aesthetically I prefer it as it reminds me a bit of my favorite Patagonia fleece, the reversible R3, though not as warm. It really is a beautiful fleece and I am excited to take it out on some hikes. I definitely see this fleece being at the top of my rotation.

Love this hoody. I wear it more than any other mid layer. In spring/summer it becomes an outer layer. My partner started borrowing mine to do yard work, so I bought a new one so I always have access to one. He is tiring (complaining) of fleeces that don’t breathe and cause him to sweat heavily when moving, so he will prob get used to enjoying my R1 Air too often! Regarding 2024 colors, the Pufferfish Gold is disappointedly more tan/brownish/dull color than the bright orange juice color in photos. I decided to return it, esp bc once I start wearing in the hoody the fabric tends to look a little ehh, which will prob mean it’ll look even less bright yellow. Instead I tried the Milkweed Mauve, which in photos looks pink with lavender patch; but really is much more of a purple than pink, (though slightly more pink than 2023 Evening Mauve color) and the contrasting patch is gray. So far as I can tell the 2024 cut is the same as the 2022 cut. Love the cut of this btw, it works great for my active curvy figure. Most of Patagonia lately is sized too small for my hips and too small for my shoulders and too big in the belly and breasts, as if they’re making clothes only for narrow-hipped and narrow-shouldered women with breast implants; I have to size up in most items to get my butt and shoulders to fit, and then the waists are huge. This hoody is one of their items that doesn’t have these issues and fits wonderfully, like their Nano Air hoody too.

I continue to wear these and reach for them more than any other sweatshirt/fleece in my closet. They are the perfect warmth/breathability and can take me through all seasons as a layering piece in the PNW.Patagonia team, I would LOVE if you came out with a Wool White version with all white pocket, trim, zippers etc. No navy trim please - just a solid Wool White would be AMAZING and so versatile.Thank you for this great design. PS I wear one size above my usual in this fleece, to make it very easy to wear as an outer layer or over a longer sleeve shirt. My usual size is too fitted for my liking.

I am backpacking for a year and only had room for one fleece and picked this one! I climbed El Chalten in Patagonia in it and it and kept me warm from the intense winds and still wicked off the sweat, super breathable, wont get too hot in it. Also wore it on planes, out to dinner etc and was super comfortable and elegant. Its a slim fit, I am a size 12 and got an L. I like the closer fit as I only wear it with a tank or tight thermal underneath. If you want to wear sweater or bigger items underneath this is not the fleece for you, fits more like a thermal. Highly recommend for high performance gear or just a nice fitting fleece to wear around town!
Excellent product - especially if you can snag it on sale. Incredible performance, super comfortable, love that it *doesn't* have thumbs holes like other technical fleeces. Arm length is spot on and overall fits true to size but more athletic fit (than say the updated Nano Air which I have in medium and is more loose). I'm 5'9" and 145-150lb. Medium is perfect. I'd give it 5 starts easily if it weren't for the inexplicable lack of zipper guard at the top. What the heck, design team? When fully zipped up the metal touches your chin/skin. Fine is moderate weather but I'm dreading the first time I use this in extreme cold environments. I might sew a makeshift patch of fabric there. Patagonia is usually so thoughtful re: performance and functionally so it's annoying ... MoreExcellent product - especially if you can snag it on sale. Patagonia is usually so thoughtful re: performance and functionally so it's annoying that this detail was overlooked. I would also say the chest pocket is pretty useless given its size. Maybe you could put half an energy bar in there or a few batteries. Otherwise, it's decorative. Using for trail runs on cold days, hiking, climbing, mountaineering.
This is an exceptionally lightweight, but warm hoody with a nice long torso and arms. I think it runs small - unless you want a very fitted baselayer fit. I prefer something I can wear over another thin shirt and have it not be tight - so I sized up one size. It's very flattering even up one size. I like the deep zippered pockets and that it is breathable but warm. The wind does cut through it so beware of that if you want something warmer in the wind. It also feels snuggly and I love this zig zag fabric.Oh the Sleet Green color is weird. It doesn't look like the photo - it's a very very pale green, almost greyish green? Minty? It's a weird color is all. Not bad but just so you know it's different than the photo but maybe not in a bad way...
Although I really like the styling, color, and fit of this lightweight jacket (the hood is especially snug, which is a nice feature), and it's also quite soft, in truth it's not very warm. I doubt I would wear this on a day where it was below 65 degrees F outside. I'm keeping it, because sometimes it's nice to have a jacket when the air conditioning is too much indoors, but I think Patagonia should rate its clothing for cold weather wear. This is not a jacket to wear when it's cold out. I live in Maine, and I love winter. But this jacket isn't something I would wear when it's chilly out.
I bought this as a sweatshirt hoodie alternative. More as a versatile layer than performance top. So I would have preferred a slightly roomier fit. I'm 5' 6" and 130 lbs with an athletic build (hips are pretty average/narrow). This is a tad snug on the hips in Medium. I tried on a Large and was swimming in it. So stuck with the Medium. I love it in white and have already been grabbing it on chilly mornings in the mountains. I hope the snug hip fit will grow on me (or give a little over time). :) Also I second the reviewer who said this needs a bit of fabric at the top so the zipper isn't touching your skin when it's zipped up. Surprised Patagonia missed that design detail. m
I love absolutely everything about this jacket! I bought this for hiking during the winter … when used as a layer, underneath another jacket, I have been SO warm. The hood’s shape really adds to the warmth factor. And then as I get warmer as I’m hiking, I can make this the top layer, and by alternating between having the hood on or off, zipper zipped all the way up, or part way up, or all the way open, I can adjust my body’s warmth, so I stay warm but don’t start sweating. It washes up beautifully, and even the gorgeous purple color (which I chose) does not run at all. I machine wash in cold and hang it to dry and it comes out just like it went in.And the POCKETS! Lots and LOTS of very functional pockets!
I really like this jacket and its interesting cool pattern! The milkweed mauve is my 3rd one of these R1 jackets. We’re in the Northern Rockies and I have been wearing these jackets at temps from 0-60 F. If it’s windy and cold, putting a puffy or windbreaker over them, depends on what I am doing.Because the jackets are described as an athletic fit, I did size up to large, so I can wear more than a lightweight top underneath them. It’s true to fit, based on measurements. Based on personal preference and experience, the Medium is a bit form fitting and the Large allows options for what I wear under it.
