A Stellar Performance Fleece

I am completely enamored by the new R1 Air fleece that I purchased earlier this month. Patagonia has always been a leader innovating and perfecting performance base layers, and fleece, in particular. But with this new R1 Air addition, they have created something special that performs exceptionally well. I have worn this quarter zip hiking and on runs in the Bay Area, at temperatures from the high 40's to the low 60's and did not feel overheated or cold. In fact, the innovative zig zag design of the fleece allows for more air flow and really dumps heat during high output physical activity like running. In fact, the innovative zig zag design of the fleece allows for more air flow and really dumps heat during high output physical activity like running. Another impressive thing is that the design does not seem to hinder the fabric's ability to block wind - with a small caveat being as long as you are moving - if you are sitting still for an extended time, you can definitely feel the wind if wearing only a base layer and this fleece. Wearing this working and around town, I was comfortable up to 65 degrees, but in temperatures higher than that, it would likely be too warm. Similarly, I'd also recommend a light shell or windbreaker while hiking in rainy conditions as there isn't much in the way of water resistance with the openings in the zig zag fleece fabric. The length of the arms is almost perfect, but ever so slightly long and at 5'10", sleeve length is always a concern for me. I like the slim cut of this fleece and opted to size up, so that I could layer underneath. That being said, I haven't had any issues with the fleece fitting comfortably under my primary slim cut shell jackets. I have washed the jacket three times and have noticed a bit of pilling, particularly in the under arm area, but that didn't impact the fleece's performance and was easily ameliorated with a sweater shaver/stone. The one thing that I'd suggest that Patagonia revisit is that although the hidden internal chest pocket is great (and yes, you can fit a phone in there), I would have appreciated two handwarmer pockets, since there aren't thumb holes. Although having no exterior pockets makes it easier to layer or utilize as a true mid-layer. As a final note, the R1 Air is definitely the softest, coziest and most adaptable fleece that I have stumbled upon in a very long time and I highly recommend it.

A fantastic piece

Let me first start out saying this is a fantastic piece. The warmth to weight ratio with ability to breath is bar none. Just phenomenal. Not to mention its softer than the normal R1's, which I love. So then why 4 stars? The cut is just a little off for me. The shoulders are snug. The back length is a little shorter than I like my cold weather garments to be (or any top, really, but really important in cold weather). I sized up and can't wear a thin wool baselayer underneath for these two reasons. Patagonia's normal R1's fit me overall a lot better. Fix these two things, and this is a slam dunk winner!

I tend to buy my Wife many Xmas presents, knowing she's picky and likely to send one or two back. Truth be told: I got this super garment in "White" and was surprised to discover it was more of a pale gray. I didn't think she'd like the color. Surprise! She loved how warm and cozy it is; and she loved the color; to the point it is up there among her favorite closet items. She wore it almost every other day in her chilly office; and uses it a LOT outdoors as a base layer. The thermoregulation of R1 Air is remarkable across a very wide temperature range. Get one and be prepared to use it all the time!

Meh, not a fan.
8 February 2023

I love Patagonia products but was not "wowed" with this piece. It is too boxy on me, billowing out mid back but snug on the chest and hips. I followed the size guide but it wasn't as form fitting as I would have expected based on reviews. If I sized down it would not have fit my bust. The material felt weird too, almost itchy and it doesn't have any stretch. I also was not aware of the pocket inside above the label, which puts a zipper near my near and makes the color not lay flat. I was hoping to use this running, hiking and lounging around the house, but it is going back. Too expensive for what it is and blah fit.

Perfect trail running pullover
18 December 2022

I just received my pullover and have gone for one trail run with it so far but I am IN LOVE and couldnt wait to write a review. It was about 30 degrees out today. Wore a Patagonia short sleeve shirt underneath. It kept me warm without getting overheated and sweaty. I am a happy girl! Well worth the price. The only improvement I could wish for would be pockets. The chest pocket isnt quite big enough for my phone, so wish it had hand pockets for headband/phone. But other than that it is a wonderful product. This is my first Patagonia purchase and I am a huge fan!! Small was a perfect fit. Am 5 ft 5 and about 123 lbs.

Versatile Super Warm Fleece
27 April 2022

What an excellent piece of fleece! It keeps me warm, very warm. I weight 90 lbs so keeping me warm is very important. I have many collection of good quality garments, but this piece is excellent for layering and it can be for many uses. I use it a lot at work under my down jacket, thats all I need. I go to work as early at 5am, CA, Marin county weather 37 to 50 degrees during this time and it keeps me way too warm. It sounds like I am complaining but I am not, love it. I am 5 ft 1/2 in, the fleece covers my butt. I have many fav clothings but this is the best. I have two these XS, green & black. Btw, I get a lot of compliment at work, nice sweater and soft. The Black one, I wear it at dinner and I got a compliment also. I highly recommend this piece of versatile ... MoreWhat an excellent piece of fleece! It keeps me warm, very warm. Warm and Cozy

I was curious about how this layer would compare to my tried and true R1 pullover. I took it on a snow backpacking trip this weekend and I have some thoughts. First, I do think it is warmer than my original R1. It wicks moisture well and is nice and breathable. I feel like it fits just a bit more snugly though. I have a S in the original R1 and bought the same size in this and I kinda wish I had tried a M.Unfortunately I do have a dealbreaker with this layer and it is the pocket, or rather, the accessibility of the pocket. I love that the pocket is big enough for my phone (though only barely) but I hate that it's a hidden pocket because you have to unzip the whole neck in order to access the darn pocket which was cold and very annoying! The men's version has a sensible outside access pocket, that is what I want too. I would not buy another women's version of this because a useable chest pocket is something I rate very highly in my outdoor wear.

Warmer than a sweater
11 December 2022

The lofty baffles of fleece, though small, pack tremendous heat on this pull-over that I wear over a merino base layer as a sweater. In the winter of mountainous Santa Fe, I remain toasty warm all day long. I committed to owning three of these and rare is the day that I am not wearing one! The red is my particular favorite, kind of a blend between brick red and brown. My only negative observation is that the sleeves could be longer, but at 5'8" and 95 lbs, everything XS fits well in the body but could use longer sleeves for me.

Why So Long?
25 January 2023

As a woman with a normal torso length, I've been growing more and more frustrated with the super long builds on all patagonia base layers the past few years. I *dont* want my R1, R2, or any other base/mid layer to cover my butt! I want it to sit right at the hip, for mobility and function. My R1 from almost a decade ago is the perfect length. I keep trying these new ones and returning them -- maybe even just making a long option and short option? Ya'll, I'm still young (31yo) and don't even have hips and I hate the butt-covering length. Please, patagonia -- stop making womens products designed only for tall folk!

Womens Patagonia R1 Air zip
31 March 2023

I bought this R1 Air in size medium. Yes, it runs just slightly narrower than some other Patagonia tops, but I still comfortably have room for a thin long underwear top under it. I don’t feel it’s constricting, because of the way it is cut, there is room under the arm pits. The fabric is light and soft. I love how the zipper comes half way down the front instead of just a quarter way. Makes it easier to get on and off. I also love how the sleeves are the perfect length and this fleece top is long enough too. Both features are So Very important when moving, stretching, working outdoors. Thank you Patagonia for designing this top perfectly! I think it’s true to size for a slim fit top. If you like your tops roomy then go up a size.
