I've had a chance to use this jacket in some heavy downpours since I bought it and it works beautifully! My upper body stayed completely dry. Unfortunately, in a couple of the downpours, I was wearing regular khakis or shorts that were not water repellent/water resistant....so that was my fault for having wet bottoms. The Gore-Tex Active is definitely less "crinkly" than regular Gore-Tex and the C-knit backer is very comfortable against the skin. So far I've been wearing just a T-shirt under the jacket because the weather has been warm where I live and there is no clammy feeling. I experimented with layers and can comfortably wear my Nano Puff with a base layer under this shell with no restriction of movement. The body is cut a little longer than the 3L Torrentshell, but I appreciate the extra length- especially in a downpour. My favorite features are the 3L Gore-Tex Active construction, the light weight and breathability- partly due to the pit zips and also the hood's adjutability. The chest pocket is nice, but the zipper opening is a bit small. I managed to get my large smartphone in there by angling it just right. The interior stretch pocket will be useful to hold gloves or a beanie. Though the jacket doesn't pack into itself, it does roll up nicely into its hood and since it's SO light, it hardly takes up space in my backpack and I don't notice it's weight at all. I got mine on sale so that was awesome. Also want to give a BIG shout out to Patagonia's AMAZING customer service as always! They are very responsive, friendly, and knowledgeable which is one of the multiple reasons I continue to buy their products. Keep cranking out the awesome clothes and gear!

Wear a Patagonia small but sized up to a M to layer underneath on colder days. Bought the yellow for myself, the green for one daughter, and the light blue for my other daughter, and we get compliments everywhere! The yellow is Man with the yellow hat classic yellow. The light green is a very happy color. The blue is nice, too. These jackets have kept us very dry on dog walks during this usually wet CA winter! Zip pockets keep phone securely dry as well. The hood brim is also secure in the wind when adjusted and low enough to keep my glasses relatively dry is calmer rainy conditions. Arm pit zipper is excellent for ventilating when temps move into the 60s. 5 foot 6, athletic build. M fits with room to layer and sufficiently covers my bum.

LOVE this jacket. paclite plus is the business, offering serious weatherproofing and great on skin feel if layered light, and burly protection if your out skiing or otherwise. Have quite literally worn this jacket skiing in a basin AND ohio and it did wonderfully for both, and its also my go to jacket for windy days when im on my SUP and need a tapered fit to do well under my PFD.Fit is true to patagonias tapered fits (R1 etc) so size accordingly. does well for the lankier builds, i have great layer flexibility with an xl but its still articulated well. Typical well thought out details with waist cinch and hood being helmet compatible, pit zips, seam sealing etc. If you arent counting ounces, and even if you are, the calcite is a worthy companion year round, ... MoreLOVE this jacket. paclite plus is the business, offering serious weatherproofing and great on skin feel if layered light, and burly protection if your out skiing or otherwise. This jacket is 4 stars for fit alone. Otherwise it would be an easy 5 stars for me. And theres a lot of poor reviews about fitment. With that said, I didn't find it to be particularly boxy in the body like some reviewers have stated. I don't know if people buying these jackets are all skinny to an unhealthy degree, but I am not a big guy by any means, only 5'9" 170lbs and the medium is good for me in this area. It's not quite as trim as say an Arcteryx fit, but I still found it to be what I would consider a trim fit. With that said we will get into the cons. It is LONG! Overly long. And I feel like this can contribute to the "boxy fit" many people complain about. And I feel like this can contribute to the "boxy fit" many people complain about. As someone who works in law enforcement and needs a good hardshell for training in inclement weather, all the unnecessary length makes it difficult for get this jacket to not get in the way too much while running a duty belt. I know this is kind of a niche problem but I own other jackets that I can just roll and tuck up at the waist to clear my gear without issue. This one has so much excess that it doesn't do that as well. As for the sleeves, again, LONG. Like way long. Why Patagonia? This doesn't bother me as much as the excess length in the body but I still just don't understand the purpose behind this. We just want proportionate sizes! This extra material also adds unnecessary weight and reduces packability, which the jacket doesn't pack up very well as it is.So those are the negatives. Now for the pros. The overall quality of this jacket is excellent despite my fitment complaints. Zipper quality is excellent. Weather resistance is amazing and 3L Goretex does its job. I find the jacket to be extremely comfortable (so long as I'm not wearing my work gear as mentioned above). Face fabric has been durable. Hood works fine for me. It breathes relatively well. It just flat out looks good. It pretty much checks all the boxes of what a high quality hardshell is supposed to do in terms of pure functionality and performance.I also got this jacket at a discount from an online retailer so I feel the value is good for what I paid. If I paid full price+tax I might have gone down to 3 stars for my fitment woes as there should not be so much negative feedback about lack of proper fitment with a $400 jacket that has been on the market for a number of years now so Patagonia has had a lot of time to listen to the end users, get it right, and stick with it. There's really no excuse. But fitment aside the jacket really is fantastic by every other metric.
After reading reviews elsewhere, I decided to get the Torrentshell jacket for everyday rain wear. Since receiving it, there have been very few rainy days where I live, so I cannot verify that it is truly waterproof in a protracted downpour. However, as the name says, it has a 3 layer construction so the feel is solid. The fit is regular so I can layer underneath for wet and cold spring days. Otherwise, in warmer weather, there are pit zips for venting. The length is good on a short person like me, providing coverage of the hips and buttocks. I bought the burnt orange colour which I quite like. I would recommend this jacket for sure.
If you can move past the hideous sound this Jacket makes, it might be ok if you're a tall bean poll with no curves whatsoever. This is not made for normal women who has hips, a larger chest and a rear end. I have muscular thighs, and am a D, I purchased the Large, all measurements fell within my own measurement parameters, but the fit is way too narrow. The arms are too long, the bottom is too slim fitting, and the noise it makes! It sounds like you are walking on a mound of plastic bags! Very disappointing, and, they take $5 to ship it back? Patagonia, please research the average American woman and adjust sizes accordingly. This is shaped for a man. This jacket is fantastic! I lost my old rain jacket and had to buy a new one for a concert at Red Rocks that was supposed to rain all night. This jacket kept me so dry! My friends with me were all jealous. In the past I had gotten <$100 jackets, I was reluctant to fork over the cash but it was so worth it. You definitely get what you pay for with Patagonia. I have two complaints, I wish it had the double zipper. I have wide hips and hate going up to the next size because then my upper body is swimming in the jacket also an XXL was not available at the store I was at and I needed the jacket immediately. A double zipper allows me to unzip the bottom portion to accommodate my hips better. That leads me to my 2nd complaint, i wish the jacket flared out more at the ... MoreThis jacket is fantastic! I find Patagonia stuff is pretty straight and doesn't have much curve which is unfortunate for us curvy girls who want great gear. Curvy girls enjoy outdoor activities too and I think Patagonia can do a better job accommodating that. The quality of the jacket is superb, I just wish it had a better fit
I had a gore-tex climbing jacket from another brand for 20+ years that I adored. It finally gave up the ghost and had to be retired a few years ago and since then, Ive run through. Few different options. Some got stolen by my kids, some got sent back to Worn Wear, but this jacket is the keeper.Crazy light for what it is, a great hood, and a chest pocket thats big enough for a snack, a phone, or other goodies on a hike. I walk daily and have stayed bone dry during some rainstorms Im sure people thought I was nuts to be out in.I have a long torso, and while the bottom hem isnt under my bum, it doesnt seem to ride up. Im a medium in everything, and there is ample room for layering a Nano Puff or prolly a down jacket under it (cant wait to test this for skiing!)My ... MoreI had a gore-tex climbing jacket from another brand for 20+ years that I adored. Seems like the smooth side is out and the rough side is in the pocket. May try to fix with some T-Tape applied around them.Again, MINOR complaint on what will no doubt be the next 20-year coat!
I've been using Patagonia products for over 20 years and this jacket doesn't disappointment. It's high quality and what you would expect from Patagonia and GoreTex. The jacket checks many boxes as a versatile, durable, and reliably waterproof jacket. For reference, I'm 6'2", 40" chest, 31" waist, 185lbs, with a longer than average torso (25") and arms (33" sleeves work best) and bought the size medium, which fits me better than a large, which is too wide and boxy.I wear this jacket for many activities year-round, ranging from casual and to work in stormy/windy weather, to hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, and even shoveling/clearing snow during snowstorms. There's ample room for layering in colder temps, the jacket is relatively lightweight and doesn't feel clammy ... MoreI've been using Patagonia products for over 20 years and this jacket doesn't disappointment. The hood is generous, which I prefer for wearing over a beanie and winter hats in cold and wet weather, and it adjusts easily. The brim does an adequate job of keeping most rain/snow off my face. I've worn this jacket in 30+MPH wind, rain, sleet, and snow for several hours at a time and have stayed 100% dry with no noticeable wind blowing through the fabric.Care/Maintenance is easy. Like most GoreTex Jackets, once the jacket gets dirty and/or caked in sweat, you do need to wash it and retreat it with a DWR to get it back to its breathability and waterproof effectiveness. After multiple washings/DWR treatments the jacket looks and sheds water and snow as if it were brand new. What would make this jacket better?More fit/size options: Adding slim fitting or tall versions of the jacket with slightly longer sleeves and a slightly longer torso would make this jacket appealing to a wider audience (i.e., those of us that don't often fit the average sizing parameters).Create a MTB-specific variant? Though it's not marketed or intended for it so far as I'm aware, the current fit/sizing and feature options don't work well for MTB'ing or gravel biking. It's too boxy and not long enough to cover one's lower back and rear in a riding position. It works okay for easy bike commuting but at speed on a bike the jacket acts like a sail due to the non-slim shape and inability to secure the hood. A slim-fitting MTB specific jacket using GoreTex Paclite Plus with a design similar to the Dirt Roamer Mountain Bike Jacket (and less expensive than the GoreTex Endure Jacket) would likely have high appeal among MTB'ers and bikepackers alike.
I'm not a big guy but I have long arms. I bought an XL but didn't like the fit when I extended my arms, way too tight across the back. So I gave that jacket to my son and got myself an XXL. Much more comfortable. I am surprised by how light this jacket is. I wear it skiing but it may even make it into my backpacking gear. The protection it offers for the weight is exceptional. I've already worn it a couple days in California's version of a snow storm: 34 degrees with miserable moisture falling from the sky. I stayed completely dry. The hood might cover a climbing helmet but it doesn't cover my ski helmet, just in case that matters to you. The one thing I would change about this jacket is the depth of the pockets, or the length of the zippers. The pockets open completely, meaning nothing is secure in the pocket when it's unzipped. I've never had a ski jacket that didn't have pockets deeper than the zippers. Seems like this would matter in climbing as well. I have already lost a pocket knife. Now I am careful not to unzip the pockets more than a few inches. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding jacket.
