Researching raincoats, I selected this one based on reviews and in spite of the comments that it was loud. After all, I owned an LLBean raincoat that I considered loud. How bad could it be? Well, this one is insanely loud. Like rustling a tortilla chip bag. And it is only one thin layer, with nothing even pretending to be lining. This is very expensive for an unlined plastic shell. On the good side, the large fit me through the chest with layers on even though I am busty. The hood was good and the Night Plum is beautiful (although the zipper stuck slightly a the transition between the plum and black plastic).Bottom line, it will go under the tree so I have something to open Christmas day and then it is going back. I live in the PNW so a quality rain jacket is a non-negotiable. After going through about a dozen rain jackets that just didnāt hold up to frequent wear, the Patagonia Torrentshell is almost exactly what Iāve been searching for. As with all my Patagonia clothing, the Torrentshell is extremely durable and I can tell it will be years before Iāll have to replace it. The waterproofing is excellent and I successfully stay dry in both urban and outdoor settings, and in torrential downpours. Iām 5ā3ā and 140lbs and wear a Small in almost every Patagonia item. I considered sizing up to a medium but Iām glad I didnāt since the Small fits really well and is roomy enough for layers. The sleeves are a perfect length as well. It does feel ever so slightly narrow around my hips/butt but Iām not particularly bothered by it. A couple of things to note that fell just short of 5 stars: the hood is hard to pull on unless you unzip the front about a quarter of the way to loosen it up. Also, as others have noted, the nylon fabric is really loud. Not a huge deal to me because the quality and functionality make up for these small flaws, but some may find these to be deal breakers. Overall a must have for the rainy season.

I had an old torrentshell jacket that delaminated on the inside, and constantly had issues with the zippers catching on the jacket. I replaced it with this newer version and it is so much better! The jacket material is thicker and way more durable seeming and the zippers all function great! Iām 5ā8 and 132 pounds. Medium fits great with lots of room for layering.Patagonia honoured the warranty on my old torrentshell to help me upgrade to the newer version. I was so impressed by how they stood by their product and didnāt give me the gears about the warranty. Had a similar issue with a way more expensive Arcāteryx jacket that was only two years old and they were awful to deal with. Switching over to Patagonia now because this was such a great experience. ššš

After previously having a couple North Face rain jackets that ended up delaminating too quickly, I decided to give the Torrentshell a spin. This jacket feels extremely well-made. It is a little stiff as some other reviewers have mentioned, but it's not in an uncomfortable way. Love the nice to have features like the double zipper pit zits. Makes using them easier than other jackets. The lining seems like higher quality than my past NF jackets, so I hope it lasts a long time. The fit is true to size. I'm usually a medium, and the medium fits well with plenty of room, though it doesn't feel baggy. I tried on a small in-store, and I think that would have been a fine fit as well, not overly tight. Though I wanted more space for cold weather layering if needed.I've ...Ā MoreAfter previously having a couple North Face rain jackets that ended up delaminating too quickly, I decided to give the Torrentshell a spin. The water beads up so well on the exterior that I had to shake it off before going inside.
So I'll be honest, I just got this, from reading the reviews I thought it would be great quality. I ordered in a size up thinking I could put some warmth under it, and I'm glad I did, I wouldn't be able to put much under it at all, at least now a shirt isn't too much, and you have to because it's really just a shell with a thin breathable liner. I expect it will shed water, given the reviews, but for the price I was surprised at how thin and cheesy it feels. And it's really the loudest coat I've ever experienced... so much crinkle noise! It's not like fabric, or Gortex, or anything I've ever bought from REI before, or even ever had before in outdoor gear. I guess I'll keep it because it's so thin and lightweight that it's going to be good to travel with I think, but ...Ā MoreSo I'll be honest, I just got this, from reading the reviews I thought it would be great quality. I guess I'll keep it because it's so thin and lightweight that it's going to be good to travel with I think, but I don't anticipate being comfortable wearing it much. Ironically I bought this to be my best raincoat for home, thinking I'd still need to buy a lightweight one for travel, but turns out this will be the travel jacket that's easy to pack. Also, I have very long arms, and the sleeves are really too long for me, so other reviews talking about the sleeve length I can relate to, but at least there's velcro wrists to scrunch it up.
This is a really good rain shell. However, it doesn't have enough pockets, and the hood adjustment is terrible. Also it hangs on me like a bag.I suggest these improvements:1. More pockets, including at least a chest pocket. The jacket has only the two side pockets.2. Improve the hood adjustment so it really works without a helmet. There is only a single adjustment, and by the time I pull the visor out of my eyes the sides are pulled so far back that my face is fully exposed. There should be a separate adjustment to pull the visor back.3. Improve the fit so it doesn't hang like a bag. Definitely do not make it fitted, as the jacket is for layering, but it doesn't need to be a bag either.
I am a woman in my 60s, 5ā5ā and 145 lbs. I typically wear an 8/10. Based on the sizing guide, I ordered a Medium (10/12) and expected that I would be able to wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath. The Medium jacket does have more than enough room in the shoulders and bust, and as others have noted, it has very long sleeves; however, the jacket fits me quite snugly at the bottom, which limits me to wearing a long-sleeve T-shirt underneath. Not a deal-breaker for me, but please keep this in mind if you are somewhat pear-shaped. A Large (14/16) would probably fit me better at the bottom, but would definitely be too big elsewhere. The jacket appears to be very well made. I bought it for an upcoming trip, so it hasnāt been put to the test yet in a rainy environment, ...Ā MoreI am a woman in my 60s, 5ā5ā and 145 lbs. The jacket appears to be very well made. I bought it for an upcoming trip, so it hasnāt been put to the test yet in a rainy environment, but I expect it would do well. Yes, itās a bit noisy, but not unusual for a raincoat. Each zipper pull has an elastic extension. The one on the main zipper is a bit more color-coordinated to the Night Plum (wine-colored) jacket, but all the rest are a very bright blue. This doesnāt affect my overall rating of the jacket, since I can remove the elastic if I want to, but it just seems like an odd color choice for this jacket.
This jacket is waterproof - very, very waterproof. And snow proof - very, very snow proof. I bought it in a hurry before a snowshoe trip threatened to turn into a rain hiking trip. I chose it because it had a slightly longer length, wasnāt too expensive, and was a great shade of blue. The weekend threw everything at us and any kind of moisture just rolled off. Actually it bounce off, it was like a moisture forcefield. I was a walking dry zone. It was also sufficiently breathable thanks to huge pit zips and perfectly packable.Negatives include pockets not being quite where I wanted them and a slightly crunchy feel. However the performance and price more than compensate. Everyone should own one of these.
No rain jacket is perfect over time, no matter how expensive. I've loved the relative affordability of Patagonia's Torrentshell and it is certainly "good enough" (I've purchased and happily used several). My use is for backpacking in northern Scotland, where quality rain gear is essential. I add for any Patagonia rep. reading: I am really sad about your new, "dull" range of colors. Backcountry walkers need to be visible for safety reasons. (Women too, not just men!). Please return to your longtime previous bright orange. Though it appears bright on the website, your new "pimento" looks like tomato soup in reality.Sadly, I'll be returning the one that I just ordered.
I bought this rain jacket for my sister since she needed a waterproof jacket to wear in the rain, whether sheās out and about in the city or for a rainy hike. I have the same one and after doing some research, it seemed like the best one out there.True enough, on a very rainy day, she was able to stay dry on top and you could clearly see the rain droplets pooling/being repelled by the jacket. She also appreciates the pit zips as she sweats quite a bit. The color is also cute and matches her style. Pockets and zippers are good too. The jacket is not for cold weather but that was expected. My sister is short and curvy so she had to size up and get a medium.
