I bought the Rustic Purple down sweater in Nov. 2022 after trying on in Bend REI store. I typically am a Patagonia L/XL, and I bought this jacket in size XXL. Ive never before purchased a top in XXL.5 ft 6 in. tall, 185 lb.40-41 in. chest; 36-39.5 in. waist; 41-45.5 in. hip (depending where measure at).According to size chart I should be a L or XL.Patagonia website MY FIT says I should wear size L.The XL fit but was tight at the hips and also shoulders (though still plenty of room in midsection); doable but not comfortably what I like. I am an avid bird watcher and always lifting binoculars up to my eyes, and this movement was constructed in XL.The XXL is a bit big on me and baggy in the back and chest, but I needed the larger size to fit my hip area and also so the shoulders arent as tight.I am using this down sweater solely as a mid-layer so it doesnt matter to me that the XXL isnt as fitted looking. The XXL was warmer than the XL, too, prob bc larger size capturing more air to warm. I wouldnt want to wear this as an outer layer anyway, wind blows right through it.But when worn under another jacket/shell, this down sweater is so so cozy. It is now my warmest coziest mid-layer piece. Worn over a Smartwool marino top, and under a Marmot Avant jacket, I was toasty warm in Central Oregon high desert temps 5-20 F, and had to unzip most of my layers as approaching 20 and above midday when sun out. The day before getting the down sweater I wore the same outfit but with a thick handmade wool sweater from Ireland as the midlayer, in 5 F, and I was okay, not cold but also not warm, not feeling warm cozy like sun glowing filling me up. All days long with the down sweater felt like I was wearing a warm hug; core so warm and hugged, like wearing a heating pad! My partner wore it a while and agrees its like wearing a warm hug, and told me to write in Review that this would be a great jacket for people who dont get enough Connection/touch and feel lonely, bc it will continuously hug you! It feels good emotionally to wear it!However, worn over Smartwool and under a Arcturyx rain jacket in raining 40-50 F on Oregon coast, it isnt warm enough, prob dampness in humid air might be getting into the down sweater and compromising its insulating abilities, even though no rain wet it. So not a jacket for PNW rainy westside.I bought the new updated 2022 version made with fishing nets nylon. I never owned the previous polyester version (which is still being sold in stores, so check the tag if yours has fishing net material nylon is the 2022 update). Bend REI store had the new 2022 update, even though the REI website says that they’re still selling the older polyester version. The new version is silky soft material, it feels wonderful to touch.Supposedly the update made it warmer, too.But the waist area is tight if you have hips (though it does have a drawcord at hip which is incomprehensible to me Why if theyre putting a means to tighten the hip, why dont they make the hip wider for the majority of women who have wider hips than waists? since narrower women would still be able to cinch it)? Wish theyd rethink this.People mention the long arms, and it does have very long arms, and they cant be pulled up to the elbow bc the elastic at wrist is too weak and doesnt stretch enough; this makes the jacket unwearable inside the house, and I wish theyd fix the elastic so that the sleeves could be pushed up the elbows and stay; but Im okay w length bc got it for outdoors, and love that my hands can tuck into the long sleeves and be kept warm from the down, so I prefer them long; and when wearing this sweater as a mid-layer under another jacket, the arms crunch up inside the shell mostly at the wrist, so the extra down at the wrist then keeps my hands warmer too. Im very glad this new version has extra long arms.Note: I also tried on the 2022 nano puff hoody in Cloudberry Orange the same day as this down sweater; nano puff fit great in size XL with plenty of room, but had so much extra midsection room that it looked bad on me, not flattering at all. Even though the down sweater is an XXL and still too large on my midsection, the cut is a lot more flattering than the nano puff. Unfortunately, Patagonia womens jackets arent cut for broader hips or shoulders. Wish that could be changed, since women without curvier hips and shoulders could easily wear the mens products.

Warm and comfortable. I'm 5'6" and 115 pounds and not very chesty. I initially chose a medium size, but after wearing it for a few days, found the chest area to billow out and the sleeves slightly too long. I exchanged it for a small, and it fits much better. Here's the weird thing though (and that's why this review is 4 stars instead of 5), and the REI clerk didn't have an answer for it--the sweater's inner pockets (not the zippered one for packing it) have corners cut out at the bottom. I can put my fingers completely through them. They're useless for holding items. The men's version of the same down sweater has pockets that are intact. This is really strange. Would love to find out what's up with that.

Finally decided to replace my 17 year old Patagonia down sweater that has seen better days (I have put it through the wringer with years of daily wear, and hiking and backing trips). The new one seems well made, but other reviewers are right about the weird cut. It's too big in the chest compared to the hips. The weird cut probably affects me less than some other women because I am chesty but I have fairly narrow hips. It's definitely not the most flattering cut, it kind of puffs out under the arm pits in the back making you look like you have back fat. Hopefully that gets better after it's broken in a bit.I got the nouveau green, which is nice but in some light looks more gray than green. I've been wearing a Patagonia Nano Puff for a few years, so when I needed a new size I tried both the Nano Puff and this Down Sweater Jacket to see which would suit my needs. I actually like this better than the Nano Puff for a great everyday winter coat in Denver. It's a little warmer without being too bulky or overly hot. I prefer to wear a hat than use a hood, but if you like a hood, I bet the hooded version is great too. The color has a slight purpleish hue to it, which I love. For measurement purposes, I'm 180 lbs, 5 foot 7, and pretty chesty and the Large fits perfectly with some room for a sweater underneath. I like that it's sleek enough to wear to work but could also be worn on a hike, snowshoe, or ski day. I've only had it a few weeks, so the durability ... MoreI've been wearing a Patagonia Nano Puff for a few years, so when I needed a new size I tried both the Nano Puff and this Down Sweater Jacket to see which would suit my needs. Many things have petite sizes as options and pants come in longs but very hard to find tops, sweaters, jackets with a little longer proportions. Bravo Patagonia for giving us an option. Always considered one of your competitors my go to but will now be checking Patagonia options before buying! It probably would be helpful to have more details in your marketing and labels on jackets though. Maybe create a specific line thats made w longer proportions for your tall, thin customers which are prevalent consumers of outdoor gear or at least write on tags/descriptions that this product has longer sleeves or whatever is appropriate. I was fairly shocked that I really had to search to figure out what kind of down fill this jacket had.
I bought this on sale, but it still felt like a hefty price tag so I needed to LOVE it when it arrived to justify the spend. This coat is magic. I'm always cold, I usually need a million layers of jumpers to stay warm. Which usually means I carry lots of bulky jackets around but I wanted something I could put in a bag and pull out when needed. This Patagonia jacket is made of magic! I can't believe how light weight it is and it folds into the inside pocket and it just vanishing into a little bundle easy to throw in any bag. And then when it's worn, it's almost too warm, so incredibly toasty. I love it, I've never loved a coat more.I went for a size large and I'm about a size 14, this was a good size because any smaller would of definitely been tight on my chest and ... MoreI bought this on sale, but it still felt like a hefty price tag so I needed to LOVE it when it arrived to justify the spend. This coat is magic. I have worn the Down Sweater Jacket for years (more than one) and found it to be PERFECT in terms of style, warmth, and durability. Needless to say, I was dismayed to find on ordering a new one that the design has radically changed making what had been a trim, lightweight, surprisingly warm essential piece of my wardrobe into a boxy, puffy and very unflattering jacket that I had to return. The dolman set sleeves, besides being way too long, create a giant chest. I felt like the Michelin Man. The former design which had conventional set in sleeves with the seam at the shoulder created a trimmer, sleeker look.I hope the design team will consider restoring the old design. Please bring it back.I am a loyal Patagonia customer - believing in the mission of the company and the thought and care which goes into the sourcing and manufacturing of goods.
I really wish this wasnt the year I needed a new jacket. I wore my old Patagonia non-stop for the past 13 years. My new jacket just arrived and I am 100% in agreement with all others who said don't mess with a good thing. While I typically dont mind longer sleeves, these drive me a little crazy. The new cut overall is less than flattering on a female - tight hips and puffy chest make me constantly pull the jacket down. The jacket generally feels more plasticky. I get the recycling part, but perhaps not to the point where it diminishes the quality. I had every intention of purchasing two jackets in different colors this season, definitely not happening anymore. While I appreciate the suggestion you have made in previous posts, please do not send me to a used wear ... MoreI really wish this wasnt the year I needed a new jacket. Id like my own brand new down sweater jacket that fits like a glove, just like my old jacked did. It was S size and perfect, S in the new version is entirely too tight, especially on the hips. I had to purchase a M this time around and its definitely no glove. I suppose I will deal with the jacket I have purchased. The main reasons Im writing this review are: 1) to encourage any new buyers to try this jacket on in person before purchasing; 2) to encourage the Design Team to listen to the loyal Patagonia client base and reverse the design changes; 3) to find out the purpose of the two inside pockets (?) (not sure if they ARE pockets because each has about 2-3 inch hole at the bottom, stuff will definitely fall out). Thank you for taking the time to read this, Patagonia team!
This is a huge XS! It’s so large, I thought it was a mismarked size “Small.”I have the 2021 version of the Down Sweater Hoodie in an XS, which fits perfectly.I’m 5’2”, and I have been buying XS Patagonia jackets that fit me for years: a Nano Puff Hoodie and Jacket, Triolet, Torrentshell, Insulated Torentshell, Fitz Roy Parka, etc.But the sleeves on this are ridiculously long for an XS, and the body is huge and sloppy. The previous model didn’t have all of the extra material and bulk, so it actually fit my body, while still leaving room for a light base layer. It was long enough to cover any top, was perfectly proportioned and comfortable. Please bring back an XS-sized Down Sweater that actually fits someone who wears a true XS size.
