I purchased this for my mother, who said she'd have no use for this jacket. Well, it's now one of her most-grabbed pieces of clothing during Fall. Where she's located, the daily temperature range is currently wide. It could go up as high as 80 degrees and as low as 50 degrees. So when she goes out, she has to wear something that's not going to make her sweat during the day, while needing to be prepared for a chilly evening. This product is where it shines. She can grab it, put it away in her bag at the hottest point of the day, and pull it out whenever she feels like she needs to put something over her layer. Styling-wise, this can be worn over casual attire, not just on workout clothes. It's worth every penny.

I've had this for many years - the color I have is no longer offered. In general, I really like how light weight this product is and especially how compact it gets once stuffed into the built in pocket pouch. However, it does not ventilate and the hood does not stay on unless I have a hat on. The ventilation I knew would be an issue in just reading the description, but when I trail run in a light rain it gets pretty hot/humid. The biggest issue I have is this is not water repellent, at all. I think it was at first, but I know it wasn't for a long time (4-5 hours hiking) but after so man years, it's basically a nylon lightweight jacket now. I've tried 3x to renew the jacket with Nikwax products, but it doesn't help. So, if you want a jacket that really is awesome for ... So, if you want a jacket that really is awesome for fitting into your purse and providing a lightweight warmth when out sightseeing, then this is perfect. Just don't expect it to repel water for any length of time.

I don't usually write reviews, but this windbreaker shell was the MVP on a recent backpacking trip. I brought it on a whim because it is so lightweight and I figured it couldn't hurt to have another jacket. I am so glad I did! It performed exceptionally well in the highlands with cool temps (40-50F), high wind gusts and on/off drizzling. The wind rolled off this jacket like water off a duck's back and it didn't leave me hot and sweaty like a rain jacket would, but extremely comfortable. The hood fit perfectly and stayed put even in the most intense wind tunnels. I ended up wearing it every day. I can't recommend enough!

I bought the houdini after seeing my friend layer one with his rain jacket in Chilean Patagonia and my life has never been the same. This layer is perfect for wet, misty environments and dry, sunny, windy days on peak attempts, multi-pitch climbs or ridge-walks. It works great at stopping the wind and trapping your body heat to keep you warm on adventures where it's too chilly to go shirt or sun-hoddie only, but too warm to put on an insulated layer. I like to layer it with my rain jacket for more wind-pro or in cold rain, or chilly snow activity days. The chest pocket is just the right size for a phone and keys for a quick run. The high-zipper with the hood is excellent at keeping my hats from getting blown off my head on ridges. The clip loop is cute but delicate ... The high-zipper with the hood is excellent at keeping my hats from getting blown off my head on ridges. The clip loop is cute but delicate and unnecessary in my opinion. When I've taken this jacket on multi-pitch climbs, I've stayed away from clipping it to my harness in fear of pulling against it too hard and having my layer tumble down the wall. When my houdini is too far gone, I will certainly be replacing it. It has become an essential piece of my layering system.
Descriptions were accurate, especially colors and sizes. I use my Houdini jacket nine months out of a year. It washed as well, hang dry as recommend.Backcountry is my first go-to store for all my adventures. I especially love that they have a large selection of brands, including their genetic brand. Online order and return were super easy! They have quality product at great prices. Easy to find sizes and colors that I wanted. Their prices are unbeatable, especially their sale events. I highly recommend Backcountry for your next adventures.
I’ve had 2 other shells over the past number of years for running. I did a lot of research for a new one for this winter. Sized up so I can fit layers (and it does fit small so I’m glad I did). The cell pocket on the front chest is a perfect fit although occasionally my phone will do a slight thump with movement. This jacket is noisier than some shells but I quickly got used to it and don’t really notice it anymore. It is super lightweight but still nicely cuts the wind without steaming up too much inside so I will say it’s “breathable”. It will transition nicely to a summer casual shell which will pack nicely for trips. Overall very happy. Not 100% sure about waterproof”ness” - I did stay dry in wet snow but generally don’t run in pouring rain anyway.
After learning about Patagonia's focus on the environment, I'd gained a new respect for them (not just a big name with a high price tag) and I wanted a Patagonia item for myself! Selecting this jacket was relatively reasonable in price (compared to their other garments) and a practical purchase for me, that I could see using for much of the year. The jacket is lightweight, very thin, easily packable; however, disappointing in terms of performance wear. There are no side zippered pockets; there is only 1 small zippered chest pocket, which is too small for a phone (although I would not want to hold it at that position); for my purposes, the small pocket can hold eye drops and a lip balm. I question how long the elastic on the cuffs will last; the elastic is very weak ... I originally bought this jacket to run in during the winter - it got a bit swampy (even with a long sleeve tech shirt under) within the first warmup mile, so I wasn't sure I was sold on it. I exchanged it for a larger size, so I could use it more as a windbreaker in everyday life instead of for working out, but I still wasn't sure (Patagonia is not made for ladies with hips - size up if you have hips/butt/thighs). BUT THEN! I went to a concert last night at a big arena. You know, the type that has the bag policy where you can basically bring in a fanny pack and nothing else? Yeah, so, I went to the FOB concert, but of course it was raining during my walk from the parking garage to the venue. Let me tell you - I pulled the Houdini out of my fanny pack, shook it out, ... Yeah, so, I went to the FOB concert, but of course it was raining during my walk from the parking garage to the venue. Let me tell you - I pulled the Houdini out of my fanny pack, shook it out, put it on and tightened the hood over my vintage 2007 emo sidesweep, AND IT PROTECTED MY HAIR!!!! By the time I got to security, it had stopped raining, so I packed this baby up, popped it into my fanny, and boom. Easy peasy. Didn't have to worry about losing my jacket while at the concert like my friends did when they had to put theirs on their seats. After the concert, walking out of the venue around midnight in freezing cold weather, I put the Houdini on and walked to the parking garage without feeling any chill, despite wearing nothing but a cut up tee under it and it being like 42 degrees out. I know this jacket is meant for really technical activities, but this jacket is my new fave. I can see myself taking it on airplanes, to concerts, to the movies, or basically keeping it stashed in my bag at all times for whatever comes up. I do not recommend it for running, but I wholeheartedly became a believer after it protected my hair in the rain. OH! And the little visor on the hood kept the rain from hitting my super 2007 sad panda emo eyeliner. Five stars.
I bought this to run outdoors in Astoria Oregon where I live and because it was a recommended choice for running in rain by Ruuners World magazine. Thats why I was wholly shocked to find that it had hardly any water resistance at all. On a 5 mile, 40 min jog in moderate to heavy rain I was completely soaked by the end of the second mile. Not just a little wet but completely soaked. The gathers around the wrist are non adjustable and leave large openings around my normal sized lady wrist so every few mins I was needing to pour a few ozs of water out of my sleeves that was getting in just from my arm movements as I ran. Had that been the only place the jacket failed that would have kind of made since to me except that a better design would have made the wrist sealable. ... I also got wet straight through the jacket on my back, chest, shoulders and head where I had the hood on the entire time. I will probably still keep this jacket as I can see how it would still be useful for some very light rain and it is very lightweight and wind resistent so it may become my winter go to on windy dry days.
From reading the reviews, I thought I was mentally prepared for how thin this jacket would be, but I stand corrected. I was extremely hesitant to keep it at first, but went with it only because a friend raved about it being his everyday hiking, running, backpacking jacket (I exaggerate the everyday part).I ran with this jacket with only a thin long sleeve in 38 degree weather and found this to provide the perfect amount of warmth. On a cold-ish day of mid 50s, the jacket is lightweight enough to keep me warm at the beginning of jogs, but also isn't distracting when I eventually heat up and have to tie this around my waist. This jacket is great for hikes, backpacking trips when you want an extra layer without feeling like you've packed too excessively.I've ran in ...
